25 year old dude w/ history of anxiety and depression. whew.

i was diagnosed with adhd 3 days ago, as you probably read in the title, and my doc perscribed me concerta, 36mg.

day one was cool, much more "in life" than "in head" i guess would be a good way to put it. although at night i became extremely irritable, while usually im cool headed.

day two was incredible, it was living as one should, felt like whatever was missing all these years was now here, i had a wonderful day. evening kinda cracked me out, irritable again as well.

both of these days also were plagued with a dull but constant headache, ups and downs, and ive been misspelling things and my typing is off (which is odd), also i seem to be having slight short term memory problems.

now today, today sucked. it was like the wool was put back over my eyes. really dissapointing after the other day's effect. i felt out of it, irritable all day, and kinda sickly. and tired, boy im freakin tired.

i'm wondering if this is common, and what the general concensus is on what is the best med?

ive read great things about adderallxr, and wonder if i should suggest it, or
Vyvanse, which i've read good things about as well.

it doesnt seem like as many good things are said about concerta.

i've left a message for my doctor as i dont want to wait till my appt in two weeks with all these side effects, especially is its gonna be like today.

sorry for the long post, i hope it makes sense, im not very focused at the moment.

Vyvanse will kill your mood if your like me. Its alot different than concerta. It doesnt give me energy, just keeps me awake. I get irratable and start to feel kinda crappy (come down) about 7 hours after taking it. It does make me concentrate and gives me an increase in motivation, however it makes me not want to ingage in conversation or pointless ramblings like I used to. I notice that im much quieter than I normally am.

I started off at 50mg vyvanse and was uped to 70mg since it wasnt working after like the 3rd or 4th day. So maybe you need a dose increase? I would try a few more days atleast since you aren't really used to it yet.

Take note that vyvanse and concerta are completely different. Concerta is methylphenidate (sp) and vyvanse is a slightly modified version of dextroamphetimine.

I also must have skipped over the fact you have some anxiety and depression.. I dont feel anxious on vyvanse, it makes me pretty relaxed actually.. Concerta usually can aggrivate anxiety in some people. However, Concerta probably will either not effect your mood, or make it a little better if you stick to it. Vyvanse makes me feel sorta disconnected and neutral, which might aggrivate your depression.

Well, 50mg made me jittery and i felt weird the first day, then the second and third day I was focused and working great. Then I pretty quickly lost the effects, so my doc upped me to 70. 70mg is basically how I was the second and third day on 50, but seems like its actually sticking with me.

SO... I would keep taking it, then if it still isnt working or you start feeling worse, stop taking it and talk to your doc about changing dose or meds.

Also, Vyvanse will completely kill your appietite around lunch. So if you do take it, eat a good breakfast, cuz you wont be eating untill supper.

Your probably tired from your body adapting to the new med. Imagine taking high doses of caffiene when you dont drink coffee or pop. You wouldn't feel to great at first.

so you're fairly new to adhd meds as well?

if so, we can race to a cure. :)

i swear this **** is making me stupid.

i could stare at this monitor for hours.

before that would drive me nuts.

Yeah.. That happens to me to a certain extent.. I feel more able to do boring things. I've been taking vyvanse for like 2 1/2 weeks. Except the weekends.. I like to relax and chill out on the weekends.

I still get distracted, but sometimes I focus really well... So I guess its all about time. Keep trying it. I had some bad days on vyvanse but I pushed through them.

Medicine isnt a miracle cure for everyone, I still have symptoms, just they are controlled or improved. I still make dumb mistakes like spelling and reading.

Heya,

I am 23/M, primarily inattentive, and I've been on Concerta 36 mg, for about the same amount of time as you have. I've had a slight headache but it's not constant. I have definitely noticed the spelling and typing errors. Sitting down and focusing is a lot easier--I don't get completely bored with my school work, and I don't distract myself as much.

Concerta is actually a very good drug. The slow release allows you to avoid the ups and downs of faster release drugs, makes longer days of studying more convenient, and reduces your chance of getting addicted.

I would keep at it at least for a week or two before I make up my mind about it. If you still feel very uneasy, maybe a change in dosage or a change in medication will help.

There is no consensus on a "best drug." Different drugs work better for different people.
