View Full Version : From Ritalin to Adderall - Lame.
I asked my doctor what he thought about Dexedrine and instead he prescribed Adderall. I didn't tell my doctor that I had tried dexedrine and favoured it because I thought he may stop prescribing me Ritalin, and stop treating me for adhd all together. So anyways when he told me he would give me Adderall I didn't argue, but I did argue with the fact of a slow release concerta. The adderall is okay but nothing compared to the dexedrine I had in the past. I would not know where to start to tell my doctor "Well I prefer dexedrine over adderall" because he will ask who prescribed it when I say it wasn't prescribed then I might be up ****s creak... How do I tell my physician "Thanks for the adderall but I think ill go Dex" he's never prescribed me Ritalin before, adderall is a big change, I've abused his trust before? What should I do..... Should I just go with adderall? I mean, the adderall is seemingly effective, but at the same time I keep remembering how great dexedrine was ... even at low doses, and the ADDERALL says "20mg" but its not even as good as 10mg Dexedrine.
QueensU_girl 11-16-08, 10:07 PM i found Adderall to be WAY more powerful than Dexedrine. But the wearoff of Adderall is brutal too. (What goes up must come down, NRG-wise.)
I really believe MDs should have to try the drugs they prescribe. (This might help overcome the false belief that Adderall is less abusable/euphoric/stimulating than Dexedrine.)
Dexedrine is smooth and mild, I found.
meadd823 11-16-08, 10:41 PM Feeling is not what ADD medications are for they are for functioning.
Feeling medications is not necessary for functioning of the brain - usually going for feelings leads to drug abuse or disappointment when your body gets used to the chemical changes and you no longer feel when the medications on-set or wear off.
If you can focus on stuff you need to focus on and / or are able to notice you are being distracted before becoming lost in said distraction then more than likely your medications are doing what they are supposed to do.
Had you not abused his trust or used medications illegally you wouldn't be in this predicament.

When did you start your adderall trial? Give it a chance before you decide that it is not as effective. That's coming from personal experience.
As opposed to QueensU_girl, I found Adderall to be more mild. Dex is more powerful for me, but tends to drop off kind of hard. Adderall is more smooth and gradually tapers off without much of a crash. However, there does appear to be more CNS stimulation on adderall, but less of a focus boosting effect than dex.
I don't agree that you should stick with your current med it if you feel something else might be a better treatment. While it's true that we are not directly after a feeling, your feelings may be indicative of how helpful the medication is. I don't care for any feelings induced by medication. But, I can judge when it's helping me achieve my goals, like getting work done. And that will establish a positive association, and I will actually "feel" it is working better. Needless to say, it's important to be objective and focus on your real goals for treatment.
Anyway, to answer your question, I would personally be straight with my doctor. This wouldn't mean mentioning having tried dex illegally. But, I would state that my wellbeing is at stake, and I would like to try dex to see if it may be more helpful. I think it's easy to reason away responsibility in life to make things easier, e.g., "it's good enough...". But, I get satisfaction out of nothing less than trusting and acting on my better judgment. It's your life, so is it really important to you?
SuzzanneX 11-17-08, 08:08 AM 10 mg Adderall contains:
Dextro-amphetamine Saccharate- 2.5 mg;
Dextro-amphetamine Sulfate(USP)- 2.5 mg;
Racemic-amphetamine Aspartate- 2.5 mg;
Racemic-amphetamine Sulfate- 2.5 mg.
Good Morning,
The point of treatment is to obtain a optimal dose of optimal medication to achieve a functional life (without getting a high from it). With this in mind, it is easier to be honest with your doctor. Tell him/her what's up with your best interest(s) at hand.
Good luck!
jeffpuffer 12-12-08, 07:27 AM The reason you like dexedrine more is because dexedrine is 100% the "feel-good" amphetamine, whereas adderall is only 50% the "feel-good" amphetamine.
If adderall is working, don't switch to a med that (it sounds like) you might get yourself addicted to. The way you're describing dexedrine as "great", and adderall as "not as good", makes it sound like you might be looking to switch to dexedrine because it's more fun to you. Especially when you say you abused his trust before.

I don't know where you came up with this logic. The active ingredients in adderall is 72.7 % dextoramphetamine, and the rest is levoamphetamine. Mg per mg, adderall is slightly less potent:
10 mg dextroamphetamine sulfate = 7.28 mg dextroamphetamine base
10 mg adderall = 6.3 mg amphetamine base
But doctors usually prescribe more adderall than dexedrine it seems anyway. I've noticed adderall to be more euphoric inducing than dexedrine.
Tominal 12-12-08, 12:50 PM The reality is that most doctors don't prescribe dexedrine at all. There is stigma attached to the drug, and perception matters more than reality in shaping prescribing practices. Among those doctors who will prescribe dexedrine, most will not do so until they have tried everything else. It is not a first line (or even a second line) ADD med in practice. It isn't as demonized as Desoxyn, but it's pretty close. Desoxyn is a great drug for ADD too, but it's all but impossible to get a prescription for it and if you can, it's almost impossible to get it filled.
If you want dexedrine instead of Adderall, talk to him about Vyvanse. That's the same drug all dressed up in a fancy new package that has no stigma--less even than Adderall.
Unless you have an exceptional relationship with your doctor based on deep mutual trust, I think their is a huge risk in asking about Dexedrine by name. Chances are high that you will trigger his "drug seeker" detector. That's just the way it is.

I agree about the prescription part, but I don't get how it's impossible to get filled. Within 10 miles of my zip code, 42 pharmacies carry it according to this: yourrxcard.com. Click on the "Medication Pricing" link and type desoxyn.
Contrapunctus 12-12-08, 06:27 PM Filling desoxyn prescriptions is not difficult, but it is expensive...
Mystery, if you like adderall, you may be disappointed by d-methamphetamine. It is even less stimulating than d-amphetamine, and certainly far less stimulating than adderall. The real advantage with desoxyn is the low incidence of side-effects...
mystery 12-13-08, 12:17 AM You are probably right. It's probably not worth the trouble to try and obtain a prescription for it. But I still wonder what the powerful ability of meth to release dopamine would mean, aside from the euphoric effects. Especially after reading some of Bonded Casino's posts...
Vyvanse is sucky...
I say that alot sorry but here is why
Vyvanse seems to wear off slower and I feel crappy all night versus adderall which seems to just wear off. In other words, Vyvanse is at sub threaputic dosages for too damn long whereas Adderall isn't. I would like to to do more investigation into this but I have a life that demands alot of attention on other things besides medication.
Note: I did put it near the top of my list, somewhere near the where it says read list and follow instructions according to priority.
Sooner or later I'll find it
