View Full Version : Low-Acid Beverages?

I have a really difficult time taking pills with water or milk, and always have - for some reason, pills with water trigger my gag reflex.

For the most part, I tend to drink hot black tea, water, and the occasional Diet Coke. Given that Adderall's effectiveness is decreased by combining it with highly acidic beverages, I'm a bit at a loss. Diet Coke's as bad as you can get, hot tea's not *too* acidic, but my preferred teas are *strong* and some of the more acidic teas out there. (What's more, the mere *thought* of gulping down a pill with a mouthfull of near-boiling water is painful), milk and water trigger gag-reflex issues...

I was wondering if anyone had any suggestions for low-acid drinks to take a pill with. I'm totally open to trying new things, I just don't know where to look.

Water is about the lowest acid beverage that I know of, just about any other that I can think of with the exception of milk are going to be at least somewhat acidy. One thing that I tried a couple of times was dissolving adderall in water, that is if you take to IR form if you take the XR form this might not be good because you don't want to turn all of those little beads into IR and get to much drug in your system at one time. However, when I did this the adderall would hit really fast and hard sometimes and give me quite a rush at times. I think the reason for that was because with Adderall IR the disolving in your stomach is part of what slows down the delivery process, and when you dissolve it in water by the time it gets in yer gut half of that work has been done so it takes effect quite a bit faster and in a more concentrated form than it would otherwise, so instead of that mild build up at first building fairly quickly to clarity and focus you get nothing, nothing, nothing and then BAM! It just suddenly feels like it is ALL there ALL at once and it can be a little overwhelming and probably would raise your BP more than it normally would. However, if you can drink the adderall in the water slowly over an hour or so and let it take effect more gradually it may work for you, the trick is not getting impatient and drinking it to fast. I found the adderall to be quite nearly flavorless, I think the only real flavor was a little bit of sweetness from the coating which actually wasn't a bad taste. Or alternately you could try swallowing your pill in a little bit of pudding or ice cream, this would work with the IR or XR versions and probably wouldn't be too acidic, or hinder the absorption of the medication as long as you didn't eat more than a bite or two or the pudding or ice cream.
