View Full Version : Should I take this or wait a few months?

I do not have AD(H)D but I suffer from depression and social anxiety. I've been on Serlain (Zoloft) for a while (100mg) and I'm very happy with it. Life is going much better socially and I have have no side effects whatsoever (not even the zombie-effect).

I still have huge problems with motivation (to wake up, study, socialize). I've been prescribed Wellbutrin XR for this (150mg). However, I'm in university and exams are coming up in 5 weeks so I really need all the time I can get to study. I'm very worried about having side effects that would make me unable to do so.

Should I stop right now or wait and see? I've been taking it for 2 days and no side-effects. The first day I feel a serious side effect I will stop, but how long until the side effects go away (once you stop the treatment)?

Zoloft (which I'm taking now) increases the amount of serotonine in your brain while Wellbutrin does the same with noradrenaline and dopamine. The only noradrenaline and dopamine reuptake inhibitor I have experience with is Ritalin and it had a great effect on my motivation. But I'm not taking that ever again. Though is this a good indication of the result and side-effects I'll have with Wellbutrin?

Thanks in advance!

You can get serotonin syndrome if you combine the two.

Did you get the prescriptions for these from the same doctor? You should ask about this. It's not guaranteed you will get it, but it's something to think about.

I'd think it would be safer to try the Wellbutrin by itself first and see which one you like better.

Hey, thanks for replying. Both medications were prescribed by the same psychiatrist. I've been taking relatively low doses of Zoloft (100mg, maximum is 300) for the past 3 months and Wellbutrin (150mg, maximum is 300) for only 3 days. I haven't read anywhere that Wellbutrin affects the serotonine reuptake, only noradrenaline and dopamine.

I'm not worried about serotonin syndrome. However I'm affraid I might experience some side-effects that will make studying harder. On the one hand I shouldn't be experimenting now, on the other hand I really need the motivation to both wake up and study (both of which are a serious problem right now). I'm on my third day now and I seem to be doing fine. Waking up was already much easier and I seem to be a bit more motivated.

I haven't seen any side effects from Wellbutrin aside from getting a bit irritable. If your doc says it's okay, then go for it. I wouldn't worry about getting more tired from it. I doubt that can happen.

Hi,
Wife was on Serequel and Wellb for years. No problems. The Wellb actually helped offset the fatigue from Sereq. Same PDoc. Now that she has hit the big 50, she only needs a therapist.
Enjoy...

Thanks for the helpful replies! I'm on my fourth day now, and I'm happy with the result so far. No side effects and I'm finally motivated to study. If it wasn't for that, I couldn't see my exams going too well.
