View Full Version : wellbutrin advice?
notmADD 12-09-08, 07:15 PM Hey folks! I haven't been on the forums for long time but I need help so here I am.
I stopped taking Lamictal 250 mg...slowly, and Adderall XR 30 mg a few months ago. I couldn't sleep and can't stand sleeping pills, hated the bad skin from the Lamictal, blah blah blah. I've definetly been depressed since having a kid and have gone deeper into depression since my mother's death. My pdoc gave me prozac but I didn't take that 'cause the idea of getting fat and lowering my libido sounded more depressing. Also, since my pdoc moved to a shiny new building, things haven't been the same and I kinda don't trust her anymore. I tried to find a new female pdoc closer to my home w/ no luck ( I just prefer female Dr.s ) Sooooo, I went to my OBGYN and asked for Wellbutrin. She asked if I'd prefer to take once or twice a day, I said once so today I took 300 mg wellbutrin XL and I feel very mell-oooo. It's a nice change from tense, weepy, and b#$%*y. However it's not doing jack for my ADD. My OBGYN recommended an new pdoc (male) and I think I will make an appt. but I'm looking for suggestions on what to do untill I see him. I still have some Adderall and I'm thinking about taking it w/ wellbutrin in the am.
BTW, I've been diagnosed ADD inattentive and mood disorder NOS.
And yes, I've been to boat loads of therapy, yoga, exercise, and tried all kinds of natural supplements. I unfortunately need real drugs, pronto.
WarPhalange 12-09-08, 07:46 PM I understand your preference for a female pdoc, since it's easier to open up to someone who is your own gender, but if you don't have a choice, you should still go to the male pdoc like you are planning to. They usually just deal with meds anyway, and if you want counseling you'll have to find another person for that. Kinda lame, but that's how it is.
Anyway, Wellbutrin has helped a lot of us here with depression and not a lot of us here with our ADD. It looks like that's fairly common. But WB also takes some time to kick in. My pdoc said to give it about 5 weeks.
Secondly, you should obviously ask your pdoc if you can take both WB and Adderall, but I actually tried the same thing. Maybe start out with a much smaller dose if you can. In my case it didn't work, but neither did Adderall by itself.

you stated adderall doesn't work alone? are you taking a new combo now?
ToneTone 12-11-08, 02:36 PM You can try the maximum, which is 450mg for xl. I noticed some improvement in my adhd when I increased from 300mg of xl to 450 mg of xl. By the way, I had problems with the generic, so I used the name brand. I have to pay more for it, but so be it.
hollywood 12-11-08, 03:27 PM tone ,
when you jumped up to 450 of wellbutrin were you using the wellbutrin alone or as a stimulant adjunct? 450 would help my adhd but it would probably touch an anxiety nerve- Wellbutrin helps me alot as an adjunct but over time I get a little worried over dumb things and at the dose i was on it didn't help my adhd all that much but sometimes it did. Is there a similar med that is like wellbutrin "stimulating" but without the anxiety component?

No, I tried the Adderall with Wellbutrin and it didn't work, but I wasn't surprised because Adderall by itself didn't work, either.
Although I'll have to get back to you on that. This is my 2nd day back on Adderall (taking Wellbutrin the whole time) and I'm feeling kind of better, but that might be either placebo or some sort of high.
The doc gave me 20mg XR pills which I took one a day for 2 weeks. Tried 2 a day (both in the morning) and it was just horrible. Didn't think it helped much.
When I went on the WB, I tried the Adderall again, but like 5-8mg XR (I had to split my 20mg pill. Doc said this was okay) depending on how I eyed it. Didn't really work.
Now I am taking around 10mg and am feeling some positive effects. It's not perfect, but better. Before, I was very unmotivated, sluggish thinking, and couldn't focus on anything because I just didn't want to do it. Now I am much more motivated, can think clearer, and can't focus on anything because I want to get everything done at the same time. :)
I still consider that an improvement, but we'll see if this goes away or not.
hollywood 12-11-08, 11:45 PM well, your description sounds totally like good old adhd . I know what it's like to be able to think clear but all of a sudden try to take on all those things jumping around in our head, thats when you have to develop those organizational skills or make checklists and prepare more like you used to back in college. Let me know how it all works out, I have been on and off wellbutrin. Not sure if I'll stick with it in addition to my stims, at times I just get annoyed of being on meds and would like to limit my overall intake.

I am in college. :) It's the last day of final exams and I have graduate school applications due Monday. So I am really frantic right now and I can't give the WB + Adderall combination a fair trial yet.

I totally know what you mean. I take 3 WB pills when I wake up and then an Adderall pill after breakfast. I need the WB right now for my depression, but my hope is that after I get my ADHD symptoms under control, the depression will go away since I won't feel like a failure anymore, when I can actually get stuff done.

true , that may or may not be the dose of your stimulant on that one... Hard to say. I had some strange drop offs with the wellbutrin, and some odd sides. One minute , good focus , the next minute I felt like I had no personality at all. i guess I'll wait and see, I've always had best results with stims alone.
WarPhalange 12-13-08, 01:09 AM I think it's sort of safe to say that the Adderall really is helping. I got so much done this morning, but now that it's evening and the pill wore off, well, I just spent the last half hour or so scouring wikipedia because someone asked "What does 32-bit mean?". I knew the answer, but I forgot what one the fancy terms was and had to look it up. And then one thing lead to another... blah.
Of course, I should be filling out my grad school applications...
hollywood 12-13-08, 12:04 PM sounds like something I would do... Some people will mislabel this and say it's obsessive thinking... It's really that we can barely remember things off meds because of our inability to sustain proper attention while holding a thought and then processing it and using it for functioning... Sometimes when my meds have worn off I'll just stand still wondering just what in the hell I'm supposed to be doing or thinking , then I'll put my finger up in the air and blurt out "ah ha"... to the onlooker it must look kind of crazy.

Hahahah
Yeah, I'll frequently start writing an email, then start something else or go to the bathroom quickly and totally forget about it. Then an hour later remember CRAP! This was time-sensitive! No!!!
