View Full Version : Full Moons
Justtess 12-13-08, 04:21 PM Does the full moon irritate you? This past week was a full moon. It is also the closest to the Earth in 15 years (?) and the next time the moon will be this close to the Earth will be in 2015.
I have to say this entire week, I couldn't sleep, became very snippy, and in an overall bad mood. I'm usually like this whenever there is a full moon, especially the "harvest" moon which seems to light up the whole night.
ADHDNEWB 12-13-08, 04:44 PM they say this is when the crazy's come out. this explains it. ;)
VioletStorm 12-13-08, 05:06 PM really? I was unusually irritable, how weird!
delirium -
the moon shines straight in through a skylight facing me
energized -
sometimes a headache from over stimulation -
- clarity of thought
- joint pain (fingers,toes)
-*-
a man thing ?

(not as in a man :-) thing)
blueroo 12-13-08, 09:09 PM Not to spoil everybody's fun, because talking about lunacy is in fact lots of fun, but just a little reminder. There's no actual established link between human behavioral changes and the moon, despite more scientific studies than you can shake a stick at.
lostranslation 12-13-08, 09:14 PM Now that we have electric lighting, the moon has little effect. However, I wonder what the crime/crazy statistics were before our cities were all lit up.
Too lazy/distracted to look it up. Anyone?
I actually felt energize, and like SB was saying more headaches this week.
Even the student at school were telling me to calm down :rolleyes::D
I find I wake up frequently when the moon is full, because I live out in the country and it actually makes enough more light that it trips my "the sun is up, time to wake up" switch. I've often wondered if the lunacy/criminality link is because before electric lighting people were just tired from waking up multiple times in the night.

As BlueRoo said, lots of studies have been done and no link has been found between full moons and lunacy.
Justtess 12-15-08, 11:34 PM Ahhhh.... the best way for me to sleep... pitch black, quiet, and a window open (even if it is snowing outside).
I've always found the full moon to be irritating... now I wonder if we can get moon burns... there's an idea for a new product! Moontan Lotion.
pADDyjay 12-17-08, 03:23 PM hello I work in a hospital and when the moon is full our ER is hopping busy!!! we always seem to get more psych and detox pts. go figure:confused:
DesertDave 12-18-08, 02:08 AM Full moons don't annoy me. I think they're pretty cool, especially since the skies here in Arizona are so clear you can see them amazingly well.
What full moons DO affect for me is migraine headaches. I'm finding it's quite common. Apparently it's not because of the extra light but something about the pull of the moon. It affect tides and many things -- why not our brains?

I'm saddened when I hear doctors who should know better make claims like this. The argument goes something like "The brain is composed of a great deal of water, and the moon pulls water in tides, therefor we can assume that the moon's effects on water remain the same". Unfortunately, this is not science. It's just bad. Whether or not the moon exerts a force has nothing to do with water. It has everything to do with mass. Anything with mass will have a gravitational pull towards everything else with mass, whether it has water content or not. The water is irrelevant.
The effects on the tide and the brain are not the same because your brain is not a massive body of water. Your brain's mass is a few kilograms. An ocean's mass is hundreds of trillions of kilograms. "The Moon's pull on objects near the Earth is only 1/300,000th of their Earth weight."[1] If a force that miniscule and tiny had such a serious effect on your brain, you wouldn't survive. You experience forces vastly greater than that just by running, driving and braking, riding a roller coaster, turning your head sideways, and a million other mundane activities.
The sun exerts roughly half the force the moon does on earthly objects, but you never hear anyone complain that people go crazy or get migraine headaches when the earth is closer to the sun (aka. daytime).

I FinD iT HarDEr tO sLEepS!
I think it's only the light. I sleep a little worse when it's full moon as there is not much artificial outside lighting where I live.
DesertDave 12-19-08, 12:58 AM I don't know if the doctor said that's how it worked or not. But they lack any other scientific explanation, so I guess that one's handy.
It didn't make much sense to me, either. Mainly because I don't think the moon get closer to us during a full moon. It's been a while, but full moons have to do with the earth blocking the sun. Has nothing to do with proximity to the earth.
pADDyjay 02-09-09, 03:07 PM I work in a hosp...last night full moon...didnt stop for my entire shift 2p-11p...when I got there , 4 ambulances parked outside of the er

EccentricFire 02-09-09, 03:19 PM Astrology is one of my hobbies. I actually tried to track my moods as the moon moves through the zodiac signs.. that didnt last long, forgot till now actually! ... hey, thanks for the reminder and making me add learning about when its full to my -things to look up list- too :)

it triggers my "the sun is up..." too!
