View Full Version : Just starting Wellbutrin--updates, plus a question.
kaleidoscopic 12-19-08, 01:52 PM Is it possible to feel the first 100mg XL within the first few days of taking one dose daily?
Taking Wellbutrin for ADHD, depression.
I've been feeling a little more motivated and focused, but that may just be finally finishing with school for a few weeks. Had a bad headache yesterday, and at one point a little bit of dizziness.
I didn't think I wanted to take ADs, but now that I've given it a shot, I feel more optimistic about this than any other attempt I've made to fight off depression/ADHD symptoms.
I guess I'll keep an update on here of just what all I'm feeling in the next few weeks as I increase dosage, etc.
ndnbutterfly 12-19-08, 02:00 PM I started on Wellbutrin XL first b/c the doc thought I was just depressed.
I noticed effects after taking about 2 week, but everyone reacts different to different meds.
It works great for my depression! But does nothing for my ADD symptoms.
Hope this helps some.
Nikki
kaleidoscopic 12-20-08, 03:31 AM Day 3 on Wellbutrin. 230 AM and I am wide awake! Gah! I drank 2-3 shots tonight (slowly) and seemed to do quite fine. That may change when I up my dosage though, so I'll be careful. Am curiously wide awake at this hour though.
RecruitDir 12-22-08, 01:27 AM You need to watch the insomnia else the Dopamine production will go down and without dopamine the WB is not nearly as effective. I take melentonin 2.5mgs and it helps - but you need to take it 20 mins before bedtime. Also, do not take Nyquil it has alcohol which my doc told me should be avioided.
Finally, yes felt the WB right away, but it was a feeling like I took a dose of Meth - and felt speedy. However, after a few weeks the side effects went away - in my case the prolonged 4 weeks was the time to build a sembelence of tolerance. I still get feelings of euphoria out of the blue. Also I get a chill of sorts - like I am feeling great and comfortable. It is important to watch BP - when I was at the 450mg dose my ears would turn red and warm and I could feel my BP rise, now stable at the 300XL I get the focus and the BP has stabilized.
kaleidoscopic 12-22-08, 02:48 AM Thanks, RecruitDR. I am starting out very, very slowly on these meds because I have had issues with anxiety. Had a bit of an emotional outburst today, but I'm pretty sure that's pressure from the holidays and extended family time. Had a headache much of the day. My body in general just feels tense, but that's sort of a steady state for me; hopefully this will help, somehow. Also, I've been having some really, really vivid dreams the past few nights--most of them a little bit eerie.
Insomnia isn't really an issue while I'm adjusting, as I don't have to be up early in the morning; if it is still an issue when I get back to school, I will definitely have to talk to someone about it.
Carissa 12-23-08, 03:55 AM Wellbutrin is odd stuff. I took it several times over the last few years for several months each time with varying results and side effects. The first time I used it a few years back-It agreed with me well enough. The last time I tried it was when I was taking a "holiday" from Adderall. After a few medicine-less weeks. I started on 150 mg and could never get back to 300 due to buzzing in my head, insomnia, and back pain among other things. I felt happy on it but the side effects got too painful.
kaleidoscopic 12-26-08, 08:44 PM Alright, a week and a half into it and I'm feeling good aside from major problems trying to get to sleep at night. Still, for now it's okay because I can usually sleep in, so I'll be fine until I get back to school and see my doctor. My period is pretty late, and there's no way I could be pregnant, so the Wellbutrin may be messing with that. My body still has a tension to it, but--mentally--I'm feeling good. I went for a run today and I've been eating pretty healthily; I've also been drinking less. It's hard to say what's really contributing to the mood improvement. I think committing myself to taking meds has transformed into a general commitment to get my life back on track, so I'm feeling more optimistic than usual. I'm not sure if it has done much to affect ADD-like symptoms. Oh, and I'm having fewer vivid, creepy dreams than I had those first few nights. I am breaking out on my face a lot worse than usual though, even though my face is also really dry.
kaleidoscopic 12-29-08, 01:31 AM Increased my dosage today to 200 mg in the morning. Apparently I'm actually taking generic Wellbutrin SR. I don't like that I'm on the generic brand, and I think it's weird that I'm taking the SR form once a day (vs. taking the XL once a day or SR twice a day).
Anyway, felt quite elated this morning and then crashed; now I'm feeling anxious, blue, and tired. Felt really good the past couple of days, though. The weird dreams have stopped. Trouble falling asleep is still an issue. My chest hurts at the moment (a sign of anxiety for me). I guess earlier today I felt GREAT, and now I just feel... meh. Not sure what to make of this.
Howard_C 12-29-08, 03:15 AM You should have gone from 100mg XL to 100 mg SR twice per day (for a total of 200mg per day), in my opinion.
Now you are getting a much larger dose in a shorter period of time and then it is getting metabolized, so your levels are rising and falling in a more dramatic manner. That's giving you the sense of elation (the large initial release) and then a bit of a "crash".
You are somewhat sensitive to it to start with, so it is a bit noticeable.
I would recommend you call your Dr. and ask to switch to 100mg SR 2x day. You may also want to stay at that level for a good while (three weeks or more) before making any additional increases.
Howard_C 12-29-08, 03:39 AM BTW, I started at 100 mg SR (1xday) for a month, then 150mg SR (1xday) for a month and am now at 100mg SR (2xday) for about two weeks.
I had a response from about day two. The strongest "side effects" were a few bursts of emotion, but that ended by about the third week (all at 100mg per day).
I don't have insomnia so much as I don't get drowsy (usually) - falling asleep is fine, I'm just not inclined to go to bed.
The dosage levels available aren't very flexible - there should be a 75mg SR and a 225 mg XL so that people can titrate up in smaller steps and/or find an effective dose at an optimal level. I also didn't like taking an SR just once per day, but the "fade" was really mild at my levels and I was glad that I stayed at each for four weeks.
If I could, I would go to a 225mg XL or a 250mg XL. I think 300mg XL may be too high for me, but its hard to know.
I've read lots of commentary about this med (which seems very mild but can be surprisingly strong) from people on doses that were too high for them (at least initially). The "rush" to get to 300mg/day (or 450mg) seems uncalled for.
kaleidoscopic 12-31-08, 03:27 AM I called my (terrible) psychiatrist about spacing out my meds, but she never called me back. I can't go see another one for a couple of weeks. I think I'm just going to start spacing out the doses, anyway.
Had a bad headache today. Vivid dreams came back last night after I upped my dosage. Some trouble getting to sleep. Fewer feelings of elation today and yesterday; maybe the end of the "honeymoon" period. Been moody. I saw a sad movie today that I felt far less reactive to than normal, actually laughing in some parts, but then later in the day found myself tearing up simply over some troubling old reminiscences. Feeling agitated and grinding my teeth a lot today and yesterday. Also, I've been having periodic ear aches for the past week or two, but I can't imagine the Wellbutrin is causing those, so I need to talk to a doctor about that, too.
kaleidoscopic 01-03-09, 03:35 AM Okay, still on the meds. I think they actually really are helping my mood, though it's not perfect. Less of the elation I felt when I initially started taking this. A couple of times when I'd start thinking about something sad and my eyes would tear up and then I'd just sort of think "Nah" and move on. The only problem is I'm clenching my jaw really, really hard. It hurts a lot and feels very sore; my dentist recently recommended that I get some sort of mouth guard made for when I'm sleeping, but I have no dental insurance and can't really afford it; thus, this side effect is worrisome because I don't want to destroy my teeth/jaw even more. Still having minor earaches. A few bad headaches. Mostly, I am feeling better but the jaw clenching thing is bad. I guess now I'm starting to worry that I won't be able to take this because of that one side effect, which is really disappointing because I think it's helping.
kaleidoscopic 01-03-09, 03:59 AM Okay, seriously, my teeth/jaw hurt so badly right now I could cry.
Prusilusken 01-03-09, 04:10 AM When do you take the meds?
You could try to alter the times you take it, it doesn't hurt.
As well as spacing it out. I'd do that if I were you, especially the first suggestion.
It may help somewhat with your sleep.
Apart from that, give it time and watch out for moodswings or the very rare suicidal thoughts that it can bring. I had those, and I had to stop my treatment because of it, which sucks and really still annoys me a bit. It's the med that has been closest to actually helping me over the years.
Give time, remember to drink and eat and monitor yourself.
Btw, I had that heart tightness feeling too, but it subsided almost totally after some time (just before I had to loose the med for above reason) so you may be lucky and it'll go away. :)
OOP -EDIT - Just saw you previous post!
I had that jaw thing, but it subsided after a few weeks.
It was reeeally uncomfortable while it lasted, though! :(
wifeandmom 01-03-09, 11:33 AM You can get a mouth guard OTC at most drug stores. You boil it to make it soft, then put it in your mouth and bite down to mold it to your teeth. It isn't as well made as one a dentist would fabricate, but it will help.
hollywood 01-03-09, 11:55 AM they make a 100xl? I thought 150xl was the lowest of the xl dosages? Fooled me
hollywood 01-03-09, 12:00 PM I agree with Howard regarding the hypothetical dosages , there really should be a 75mg sr for those that only need a little , I think they do have 50mg sr's ? I can't remember though
