View Full Version : PNW Storm Thread
chartreuse 12-21-08, 05:04 PM Just wondering how all my fellow PNW'ers are doing through this weather?
Here in SE Portland, we have about 9 inches of snow (except for the drifts, which can be up to 2 feet), 1/2 an inch of ice (with at least that much more to come plus another few inches snow) and quickly fading hope that this will be cleared off enough by Thursday to allow travel to see relatives.
We also have two dogs that simply do not understand where all the grass and bushes went, and so are getting increasingly neurotic about relieving themselves. Any suggestions in this regard? Having to take a 25 minute walk just to get them to pee is getting old quick....(it's about 22 degrees here, with wind chill making it feel about 7).
Retromancer 12-21-08, 05:38 PM Here in Seattlegrad we had 5 inches of snow, give or take. I'm actually enjoying myself. Of course I haven't been outside since yesterday. I'm inside, snug and warm... :D
Worked yesterday at my local hardware store. We sold out of everything that was at all winter related. People were on the verge of panic. Seattle-ites do not handle extreme weather well -- especially snowstorms. It's amusing -- if you don't have to live here.

Oh, sure, rub it in...our dogs have to go out FOUR TIMES A DAY.
It's not that I mind exactly; we'd do anything for them, but it's amazing how much time it takes to get dressed to go out, go out, get undressed, over and over again. Ah well...it is something different, at least.

I have to admit that I do find this aspect amusing anyway, even living right in the middle of it. We are very well prepped, so I do get a certain sadistic pleasure out of watching the storm coverage and people having to go out to get stuff because they don't have more than half a day's worth of food in the house. Although this one is bad enough that mostly now I'm just feeling really sorry for folks and want everyone to be safe...there have been some really horrid accidents down here.
EYEFORGOT 12-21-08, 11:12 PM On the other side of the country, we've gotten about 8 or so inches with more due on the way.
I have an electric fence for our dog, he's a wanderer, so he's able to go out in the yard on his own. He walks across the porch, steps next to the nearest bush, goes, and then is back on the porch and into the house as fast his tail can wag. No walking. He's very happy to sleep all day.

GOOD DOG!!!!
One of ours is Shiba Inu. On the one hand, he is pretty much an arctic breed, with the thick double coat, and a love of cold weather. Unfortunately, the breed in general (and he to extremes) is very, very fastidious. He won't go anywhere close to where he lives even under the most ideal weather conditions.
Anyway, I hope your weather turns soon; I don't know how people in other parts of the country deal with this on a regular basis.

You know, I did hear that he MIGHT make a return for one of the final ER episodes....
On a more serious note, as far as I'm concerned you and everyone like you deserve some sort of commendation, for staffing the hospitals and the grocery stores and the fire and police depts. and the news stations...this storm here in the NW might not be much by NE standards but it really gave me pause to think about those who don't have a choice but to go in, and stay as long as they're needed.
As for here in Portland, we now have 14.5 inches of snow out of this latest batch (started Saturday, I believe) and although the forecasts are generally calling for a slow warming (up to a toasty 34 or so tomorrow) and that the next batch of precipe will fall as rain, the mayor-elect just came on and said that they have talked to all the forecasters and the consensus is a "low confidence" level regarding what's coming next. We have very funky geography here and it tends to complicate things.
