View Full Version : Just got Rx for Ritalin ...
Mastiff 12-22-08, 10:11 PM I haven't been formally diagnosed with ADD, so this is experimental. Based on my own research though, I'm pretty confident.
Anyway, my Rx calls for taking a pill twice daily. Do folks generally take these in equal increments over 24 hours, or over their waking hours? In other words, should I take one in the morning and one around lunch as opposed to morning and night?
I'm concerned about being up all night since I have trouble with insomnia anyway (or is it because of ADD?).
ginniebean 12-22-08, 10:15 PM yes, you take them at morning and then at lunch, if you take them before bed, you'll be up all night.
Treat them like reading glasses: only use them when you need them.
As you're starting out, and in line your with Rx instructions, I'd take one 1hr before brekky, and the 2nd one 1hr before lunch and see how you go.

Some practitioners like to trial patients on the medication and assess their response to facilitate a diagnosis.

Which is an inaccurate way to diagnosis ADD -
it is also a medication question . . . ..
pADDyjay 12-22-08, 11:47 PM thanks again :)

It's right up there with 20-question self-evaluation surveys...

That's what's happening. I'm no doctor, but with all the different possible symptoms which sometimes conflict, I'm not sure how you could really diagnose it otherwise.
Honestly, I don't care what the name is for what I have, or even whether it has a name at all. If these meds do the trick, I'm happy.

The inaccuracies arise due to peoples poor ability self-evaluate, and the fact that most neuro typical people will respond positively to stimulants in some way.

Yeah, I guess it gets kind of philosophical at that point. If I respond positively, i.e. feel better, that's the real goal.
I've been seeing this doc for a while now, and he knows I'm trying to get normal, nothing else. I'll report back in a month or two and we'll re-evaluate. I'm certain he'll pass me along to a psych if things get complicated.
Mastiff 12-24-08, 02:27 PM More questions for you folks. My Rx is for two pills per day, and the information sheet says to take 30-45 minutes before a meal. Can someone explain why this is necessary, and how important it is? I'm having trouble figuring out how I'd schedule my two doses. If I go before breakfast and before lunch, they'd be only like 4-5 hours apart. Ideally, I'd be thinking of something like 7 AM and 2-3 PM.
My next question is whether there is any sort of build-up effect or adaptation over time with this? What I'm curious about is whether how I feel on the first day is indicative of how it's going to be long term? The effect is extremely subtle, so if it's going to stay this way, my guess is that I should have a higher dose.

It's preferable to take it on an empty stomach as metabolism will be more efficient, and also, there is less chance the medication will interact with food.
There is an adjustment period when starting stimulants. It's also normal to start on a low dose and work your way up to a larger dose. You most probably right; you may need a larger dose in future.
Mastiff 12-24-08, 09:24 PM Okay, so it's an empty stomach thing, there's not actually something significant about actually eating within 45 minutes? This is what threw me. Lots of drugs say "take on empty stomach", but for some reason this emphasized the eating part. Sounds like taking it mid-afternoon would not be an issue then.

It's just a number: no one is really sure how long it takes the stomach to empty itself.
