Ok.. for those of you who go to church, does your church have a band/worship team?

If so, what kind of music do they tend to do?

And do the older people in the church complain or object?

The reason I asked is because it's been a bone of contention with some of the older people in our church because we've chosen to sing some of the new contemporary music available along with the hymns.

Mary,
The church I go to has a fabulous worship team. FOr the teen mass on Sunday night, there are typically 2 guitarists, a pianist, a drummer, a violin and bass player, sometimes a flutist or a brass, along with a percussionist and as many as 15 singers. They play contemporary music, and two of the music ministers have won Dove nominations. We don't get complaints as far as I know- the music is the reason many people come to church. THe 7:30 am Sunday has toned down music for those that like it, but they still play contemorary music.

Although I consider myself fairly young, I don't care for the contemporary style of music in church. Although I do enjoy listening to it, I find it distracting and not conducive to worship. Many of the young people who sing and play instruments are quite good.

Our church offers the contemporary service for those who enjoy it and it is not just teens! It does attract a huge number of teens. I think I probably would've enjoyed it when I was younger. I think it is a good idea, because the teenage years are when young people tend to drift away from attending church.

I find that quiet and sometimes uplifting traditional hymns are best for me.

I have yet to get Beth my adhd daughter to go back to church even with the newer style of music. A few years ago someone said something to really upset her and it's made her not want to go back to church.

She loves the music part of service, but she's afraid that someone is going to upset her again. Her feelings are easily hurt and she takes things harder than my other kids who aren't AD/HD.

I am hoping that she'll get over her hurts and want to be in church again. She has told me when she goes that she feels better about herself. So she knows it helps her, it's just hard for her to let go of the past.

Mary, the music director at my church happens to be a good friend of mine....and he's only been doing the music there for about a year. He plays piano/keyboards, plus there is a drummer, one guitarist and a bass player....plus about 10 vocalists.

My friend (his name is Rob) has drastically changed things. I can't remember what happened before he came along, but he mostly uses music from Hillsongs....it's contemporary praise and worship music. It's awesome, and I don't think anyone at the church minds a bit. If they do, then they need to get the doot out of their doot. :p

Growing up as a child with undiagnosed ADD going to church was very hard for me. I day dreamed through the whole mass. I recited most of the prayers and repeated what what everybody else did but had never processed what any of it actually meant.

I probably wouldn't have got more out of it if there had been music or the services were a bit more "ADD Friendly".

Agreed.. other than Beth I think there is one other child who's AD/HD. He is like Beth only he comes. He doesn't always listen, but does keep himself occupied during service.

Beth has shown an interest though in learning about the Bible and has requested a new Bible for her own reading. So we're going to do that for her.

Since being on Adderall she is finding it easier to process. Has actually been reading The Lord of The Ring books and remembering what she has been reading. I have been so happy to see her picking up a book, because 2 years ago she would never have done any reading.

Our non-denominational church has an awesome praise team. They usually start out with a traditional hymn, then break into a long set of music from Hillsongs, Robin Mark, Lenny LeBlanc, etc. We have quite a few elderly folks who actually love the music. When I see one of the women who is severely crippled with rheumatoid arthritis raise her arms in praise, it humbles me.

Personally, I find listening to the lyrics and the beautiful harmonies help me to focus. Although I enter it's doors with with thoughts of "let go and let God" and try to empty myself in order to be filled, that's easier said than done. But the music helps me to achieve that state and prepare myself for the message.

The music also carries me thru my week and help me to deal with the challenges that surface.

Update on Beth. She has been going to church. She is also attending youth group meetings and making new friends. She isn't on her meds at this time. Finances aren't the greatest right now. However, she seems to be enjoying herself immensely lately.

We have several of the older people who really enjoy the music. But we still have others that don't. Anyways...I'll keep you posted.
