Does anyone know the law about prescriptions for stimulant medications in the United States? How long (like how many months) of a prescription are doctors allowed to write?

the reason i'm asking is that I am going to Germany this summer for 4 months (I got an internship there!! yay!!!) and I will probalby be on Adderall... I'm not sure if I can take a 4 month's supply or not - and if I CAN"T, then would I have to get my doctor to mail me prescriptions every month?

If adderall is a controlled substance, then your doctor could write you a prescription for 4 times the amount of the med (i.e. 1 pill taken 4 times a day) on one script. However, if you're going to try to submit this through insurance, they may have an issue with that. You might try calling your insurance company to ask them how you can get your 4 months supply.

The longest scrip my kids get for Adderall is 30 days, since it is a controlled substance. And they're on the XR, which comes in capsule form so it can't be chopped up. I have no idea what you can do.

My son's doctor usually just writes us a couple of prescriptions for each month at the visit. Maybe that would be an option for you if you can get them filled in Germany. Just ask him to write the 4 different prescriptions for the 4 months that you will be gone.

maybe you've already done this, but before you take 4 months of Adderall on a flight to Germany, be sure to check on their laws so you don't get busted at the airport.
