I know you are going to laugh at this. I just know you are.

The greatest danger in my life is hitting hyper focus before I have had a chance to go to the bathroom. No, I'm not kidding. Yes, I wish I was!

By my age, you would think that knowing when you need to use the facilities would not be an issue. I would not be so lucky. When hyper focus kicks in it requires an act of God to get me to realize that I need to go to the bathroom and actually do it. Sometimes I notice but don't connect the urge with urgency. Sadly, there have been times when I neglected the task too long.

I don't think that this is a procrastination issue. It may not even be an ADHD issue. All I know is that no matter how hard I have tried over the years, it is not a behavior that I have been able to modify. Sheesh!

While I realize that this may not be something that folks care to share about- I will cheerfully accept PMs in response- has anyone else had a similar issue? Or a behavior modification trick that might help?

Oh, I'll do that. Not to the point that I pee myself but I will certainly hold it longer than I should because I do not want to get interrupted.
This is one reason why so many ADHD kid will still wet themselves at 4 or 5.

Guilty as charged!

You know the child you see dancing around for the world outside their doorstep begging their mum opens the door in time for them to run to the loo and all because they refused to listen to the urge...... thats me and the doors already bloody open all I have to do is actually stop what I am doing and move towards the toilet......... yet I cant/ dont, I'll just finish this a sec and then I'll go, oh wait now I need to do this and this and........... so it goes on.

I'm not sure if its hyper focus or the fear that comes with the knowledge I will have forgotten what i was doing before I reach the toilet so any chance I will finish the task later is out the window.

Bah who knows either way I know what you mean

I do it sometimes, if I'm at the computer usually. I always found that at work I couldn't keep up if I had to go though.

Ladies, thank you! Many of us have thrown out things that we always thought that only we did to see if there was any shared experience. I'll make a bet that everyone who has done that- taken that chance- was as certain as I that I would die of terminal uniqueness. Seeing your responses makes me feel a bit more human. Normal, even.

It's hard to believe that people who are so intrinsically bright and creative end up being so isolated in their experience. I understand why that happens- we spend the first part of our lives hearing that we're lazy and unwilling to try and a bunch of other untrue things, and the rest of it constantly finding new ways to blend in. It just breaks my heart.

Thanks again!

I am very similar (especially for the reasons that lollypop mentioned about the "might not remember what I was doing" cause of it) and thought I'd just mention... I am fortunate enough to have my own bathroom right off of my office at home (secret to a happy marriage, I swear!) and I always keep a pad of paper/pencil in a drawer. Eureka - no more lost trains of thoughts or ideas!

Of course, do I ever remember to CHECK those notes? No!!!!

(yes, gross to have paper/pencil in the bathroom - but it's MY bathroom and I can do as I please!!! LOL)

LOL its so funny you say this, my mum among many others all my life have said I would be so much more organised if only I learnt to write lists........... good lord will they never understand.......IF I remember to right to list I then have to remember not only where I put it but that I actually wrote it and need to look at it. It just doesnt work lol.

My issue is similar: I cannot focus if there is the slightest urge there...so I make frequent trips. :o

oh...so often!

I am the one rushing up the stairs to home, dropping the groceries higgledy piggledy as I rush to the bathroom (not always making it on time:()
My daughter is 5 and also has AD/HD I believe.....and she always waits too. Going to the toilet is always a drama at our house.
"I have to go to the toilet.....NOOOOOOW!"

Scary thought of the day - I am exactly the same way.

I definitely get to the point where I have to go and no one better stop me on the way, or they will see the "pee pee dance" which is definitely not appropriate at work. :) Luckily my co-workers have come to recognize that when I don't make eye contact it is best to not ask me a question.

When I was younger my mom thought it was laziness that I would wait so long, but it really was that I wouldn't notice until it was an urgent matter.

That is too funny!! I do that too. It's a pain to have to tear myself from what I'm doing because I'm always worried I can't pick back up.

After some bouts with UTIs, my doc warned that I should NOT be holding it in. If I need to go, by all means GO!

My solution?? Mega doses of cranberry extract every morning with my regular meds. I haven't had a UTI in a long time now...

I haven't realized how utterly ridiculous that is until now! hahah
