I am a 57 yr. old woman who has had ADD forever, I just didn't know it. I thought I should just pull myself up by the good old bootstraps-My mother saved every report card of my life-when she died I read them..whoa, I had no idea. So this is something I have always had. What I have found is that since I went through menapause (early, at 46) it just seems worse. I accidentally came across a discussion of adult women with ADHD and it resonated so deep in me.
I have an appointment with a psychiatrist this week. If there is anything I can do to get a focus on everything from the litttle daily things to the big picture? Any I will be grateful for any advice.
Any comments about menapause and heightened symptoms?
I have not been technically "diagnosed" Do psychiatrists do the diagnosing?
Any advice on this journey would be very welcome.
Thank you
(I have no idea how these sites work, I'm new at the blogosphere, any help there would be great too)

Welcome!

I'm around 10 years younger than you and am doing the menopause shuffle. What fun! (NOT).

Your psychiatrist should be able to let you know what your treatment options are. It tends to be different from person to person. In my experience, the psychiatrist diagnosed based on a six hour comprehensive series of tests.

There are discussions in the Ladies Only sub-forum that address ADHD and menopause as well as PMS.

Let your psychiatrist know that you experienced a change in your ADHD after menopause. Unfortunately, there isn't a whole lot of research yet on PMS/menopause and ADHD. One of the best resources I know of can be found here: http://www.ncgiadd.org/ .

You seem to be doing just fine. Find a discussion that interests you and read. Post as you are comfortable.

Good to see you here!
