View Full Version : Adderall and Betaine HCL

Hi everyone, I'm new here. Anyway, I was just put on Adderall and I know that vitamin C/ascorbic acid interferes with it. But I have problems with low stomach acidity and I have to take betaine HCL whenever I eat something to help me digest it. If I don't take any, I get horrible burning pains that last all day. Since betaine HCL is pretty much stomach acid supplementation, I'm worried that this might affect my adderall.

I was thinking of taking my adderall at least an hour before I eat - would this be ok? Would the betaine HCL that I take when I eat affect the absorption still, or will that have been enough time? I take 5mg Adderall XR twice a day since I just started, so I would have to be planning this around breakfast and lunch.
Thanks.

I would avoid taking adderall with anything but water or cerial. With Adderall XR there's two hits; one hit that you get right away, and another hit sealed away in beads (which are typically digested 4 hours later). My concern would be that these beads might become digested sooner than they were designed to. Maybe someone who knows more about the beads and biochemistry will have something to say. If you're not using XR then there's prolly nothing to worry about.

"would this be ok?"
Adderall is my breakfast; I've never had issue. I make an effort to drink at least a half cup of water with it. In your particular case though, I don't know what to tell you cause I've never heard of that pain before.

Here's a good point on it http://www.addforums.com/forums/showpost.php?p=442196&postcount=4.

Generally speaking we hear "avoid acids" and "potentiation through bases, radical!" and so fourth, but in your case, I'm not quite sure since your system, you claim, is unnaturally basic; and thus the HCL.. you might be able to take the HCL along with the adderall and not interfere with it's absorption.

Food makes a big difference so I keep it far from reach of adderall. http://www.addforums.com/forums/showpost.php?p=439285&postcount=1

Thanks for all the info! I probably should have mentioned - Im on the generic for adderall ("D-amphetamine salt combo") and its in tablet form. I dunno if that makes a difference. But I'll try taking it far away from food...

Do you take yours more than once a day? If so, do you take your second dose far away from lunch or something?

I take Adderall IR (generic form) 20 mg in the morning and 20 mg between 1:00 and 3:00 in the afternoon. I take nutritional supplements as well.

I take the Adderall as soon as I wake up and allow at least an hour before taking the vitamins. I tend to have lunch around noon so it doesn't interfere with the afternoon dose. I found that taking the last dose around 2p works out best for me.

Yeah, I agree with the first response in that your stomach ph with medication is probably right around the norm. In that case, you don't have much to worry about.

If you find that you aren't getting enough out of your adderall, you can always increase dose to compensate. If that doesnt' work, there are some other release systems out there that may work better with your ph (Concerta and Vyvanse both come to mind- they don't exactly hang out in the stomach. They're in the intestine all day)

Trial and error is your best bet. And by the way, your starting dose is really low. So if you're not feeling anything, it may have nothing to do with your stomach ph issue.

thanks everyone! Yeah I figured that my stomach ph with the betaine is probably close to normal. I know my starting does is really low and I'm only feeling a little better in terms of focus and stuff, but I've been on wellbutrin for a while and we're currently trying to taper my dose down before raising the adderall any more (because of seizure risks and stuff). So I'm also on 200mg/day of wellbutrin. However, wellbutrin stopped working for me a while ago, which is why we're stopping it and changing - I have depression + ADHD and the wellbutrin didn't do much for the ADHD although its supposed to help a little in that area. The ADHD seems to be the overbearing problem right now too.
