View Full Version : Generic Vs. Brand ones Are they working for you?
pisces80 02-05-09, 08:36 PM Has anybody found a difference between your generic pills vs. the brand name one. I got these blue 10mg generic pills with a E 111 inprint in them and I really don't like the way they make me feel. I can hardly function while on them. A while back I was put on Wellbutrin and the first prescription I got were the brand name one, then the second time I got the generic ones because they were a lot cheaper, but what a huge difference they were. The generic ones made me feel like crap, I stopped taking them and went back to the brand names and I felt completely different, much better. Well I was wondering if there is a brand name pill for Adderall because I'm considering asking for them next time I go, because I really cannot stand the way this one are making me feel. All I wanted to do yesterday is just lay down and do absolutely nothing. Everything was a struggle even the simplest things. Does anybody take these kind of pills? Let me know if they are working for you. Thanks everybody and take care.
pisces80 02-05-09, 09:18 PM Hello it's me again, I was just reading another post around here about someone saying how some manufacturers make pills stronger than others. I wonder if it's true and if it's the case with these ones I'm taking right now. They're Adderall 10mg IR, blue ones with an E 111 inprint made by Sandoz Pharmaceuticals. I was taking one 20mg XR pill a day, but they were making me very tired/sluggish so my dr. lower my dose to 10mg, but man taking these blue ones are making me feel even more tired than when I was taking the 20mg XR. I'm gonna try and split the pill tomorrow and see how I feel just taking the equivalent of 5mg. Hope it works.
somuchbetter 02-05-09, 10:09 PM Funny, I was JUST looking up info on different generic brands because I had a pink one and a blue one and wondered how in the world two of the "same" thing could make you feel differently. I am pretty new to ADHD.
So I did some reasearch, specifically corepharma and barr. I had tried a pink (corepharma) first and it was fantastic: I got motivated, was patient with boring tasks, did things till they were finished, my brain for once felt organized and I actually for once had physical energy, but it calmed my mind down. One thing at a time. I just wanted to do do do, but I didn't rush. I didn't feel the need to check my email or the phone. The only thing I did not like about it was that my mouth was SUPER dry, and that I was irritable if I got interrupted.
I have been taking the barr brand for two weeks and I am not so clear... focused but its kind of fuzzy, losing track of time more easily, and a loooot more drowsy. I can maintain focus, but only in a window of time. I definitely don't have that energy... which I need, I am constantly tired. In general, it works similarly, but kind of slow mo.
I also noticed that the pink one took less time to get into my system (20-30 minutes), while sometimes the blue ones don't work for at least an hour, unless I take it on an empty stomach. The nice thing is that I do not have the appetite suppression on the blue ones (I am rather small).
I know that a lot of people have said that they prefer the barr brand over the corepharma and others, but I found someone on a different forum that has tried different generics, but having a break in between. She said that switching from one brand to another abruptly is a bad idea... not sure why, but I suppose it would make sense, since I prefer the pink one and it was the first one I had ever tried.
I think it just depends on what works for you, personally.
pisces80 02-05-09, 11:48 PM When you say blue ones, do you mean the same ones I have, they're the ones with the E 111 imprint in them. I guess not a lot of people take that one, because I haven't found much information about them here yet. I guess the more popular are the ones you mentioned, the barr ones and corepharma. I was recently diagnosed with ADD so I'm also pretty new to the medication.
somuchbetter 02-06-09, 04:24 AM Oh, I'm sorry I didn't specify. The blue ones I have are barr 5 mg pills. To my knowledge, the higher dose of barr brand are orange.
vague107 02-06-09, 12:48 PM I have blue ones 5mg, but they say they are manufactured by Corepharma? They have "Cor 130" on them. Did you say the corepharma ones were pink? or is that the color for 10mg?
I noticed that sometimes mine make me tired (I fell alseep the other day trying to study, right around midday) and sometimes I feel like doing absolutely nothing. I was just thinking its the low dose though. Also it seems I can't have any food in my stomach at all for it to work, even tried eating 3 hours apart. I guess this wouldn't be such a problem if it made me less hungry but it hasn't seemed to do that either.
also, I noticed the same thing about wellbutrin generic vs brand name - generic wellbutrin made me feel worse
meriellyn 02-06-09, 01:04 PM I took the 10mg Barr tablets (bright blue, imprinted "b 972") and they were ok but I couldn't find any other brand around here to compare them to.
I would suggest that if you have access to the generic Barr, you might as well try those rather paying for name brand. Shire sold the manufacturing rights for generic Adderall IR to Barr anyway... so basically Barr makes the more widely available (in many areas, the only available) generic option *and* the name brand. I won't go into my personal feelings about that setup but I thought I'd throw that out there for your consideration.
Oh, and if you take 5mg at a time (as I usually did) and you don't pay a flat copay per prescription, you might see if getting your script written for fewer 10mg tablets and splitting them might be cheaper than the 5mgs. Also, some people see a difference in the different strength tabs even from the same manufacturer. So if you don't like the 5mg's you might ask your doc about writing your script 10mg (half at a time) to see if they're any different.
Generics are kinda hit or miss. I've had some success with a few, but have had trouble with a few. I do believe I was helped less by generic Welbutrin when I got switched, back in the day. Now I take Lamictal and started taking the generic last month. A couple weeks later, I felt as though I had stopped taking my meds entirely. Horrible. I'm back on name brand now (at great expense) and feeling better. It makes me mad... but again, I guess that's another discussion entirely. Lol.
But with Adderall IR, there are so many generic options that you can probably find one to suit your needs.
As I mentioned, I was ok with the Barr and am now happy with their Dexedrine. But again, those are my only options around here. Sounds like you have more options though so just try different ones and compare for youself is my best advice.
Good luck and hope that helps. :)
