I've been on adderall over a year (15mg XR + 5mg IR PRN) and it's been working well for me.

However I just lost my state health insurance and my new policy will no longer cover ADD related visits or meds.

This past week without any medication has wrecked havoc on my normal routine and I'm certain I'm not going to be able to get by these last 7 months of school without some form of medication.

Does anyone have any recommendations to a similar medication that is more affordable? I've tried ritalin in the past and unfortunately that only puts me to sleep.

I was actually thinking about contacting the company to beg for some help or something because paying around $200/month for medication is just not feasible for me.

Shire definitely has patient assistance programs (I'm signed up for their Vyvanse program and get it for free this year), but generic adderall is also fairly cheap. If you go to Walgreens and join their pharmacy discount program (costs $20 a year), you can get 60 30mg tabs for around $35.

Also in a few months, generic adderall XR is set to hit the market if that's of interest to you.

Generic dex might be cheap too: I'm guessing though as I'm an Aussie and our meds are govt. subsidized.

Generic Dexedrine IS cheap comparatively speaking. Though some doctors have a bias against it.

It's not as cheap as it used to be, however. Shire, which used to hold the name-brand on Dex and Dex extended release, quit making them. So the other two "generic" companies (I believe there are only two) upped their prices a bit. But it's still better than adderall.

There are a lot of online pharmacys that you can order from. Many of them are international and offer lots of items cheap...

I switched from XR and IR to all IR for cost reasons a few months back. Whereas I used to be spending $165ish/month at Costco for meds (which is easily the cheapest pharmacy in the area by 20-30 bucks) now that I'm on IR exclusively my monthly prescriptions cost me about $50/month for 60 x 20mg generic Adderall, 30 x 10mg generic Adderall (keep meaning to ask if I can just split 20s and thus buy fewer pills. Next appointment.), and 30 x 10mg generic Prozac.

If you want to switch away from Adderall, I've got nothin' by way of advice, but I've discovered that I actually prefer the generic IR and plan to stick with it even when XR goes generic.

Generic Adderall XR will not be available until 2018. Do not buy anything that claims to be generic Adderall XR.
