I'm new to this forum and hope to get some advice from you guys.I'm 24 and have been taking a generic to unisom sleep pills since 2000 and i can't go to sleep without them.I depend on them.I went trough a lot of changes and emotional strees the past 5yrs.It's a long story.I have a dad that has depression, his whole family is like that and i think i'm getting it too,but i don't want to face the truth.I live with my fiance away in another city from my family.I love my family and everything and i miss them.I'm unemployed, try to find a job and stay employed and then i end up quitting after a month.I can't find something i like and my fiance is not supporting me at all.He says that i have to stop taking the sleeping pills and start being happy.I cry a lot, what is wrong with me?I'm afraid to go to the doctor, don't want to be diagnosed with depression.I've seen my dad going trough a lot and taking all kinds of depression pills and none have helped. He is not helping himself first of all,how can pills make you happier?I need to stop taking these pills,i'm ruining myself?Any advice

Hi jenna22,
Welcome to the board! I am sorry to hear about your situation, I know depression all too well. What I would do first is(and I know this is the last thing you want to hear)get some help to kick the sleeping pill habit. You really can't work on your depression until you break the habit. Check out some rehab centers, it will be worth the look.

I sometimes take over the counter sleep aids. Is what you're taking diphenhydramine? It is an anti histamine used for allergies and causes drowsiness. I guess if you take it every night you could get dependant on it.
You should definilty seek advice from a doctor. If you are depressed it could be bad if you don't get a diagnosis and get the treatment you need.
Pills don't work for everyone, but they do help many people, and perhaps save many lives in the process.
Please talk to a doctor soon!
i hope everything works out for you

jenna,
I agree with everyone else, the one thing is if you don't stop it could get worse. See your doctor he will help.
