View Full Version : Inattentive and quiet?
Someone remarked today how quiet I was; I usually have a coffee before work and they said they never hear me come in...in fact people have always said this about me. But I feel like there's so much going on in my mind sometimes, it seems like I'm actually making lots of noise. - anyone else?
chamaleon 03-02-09, 04:30 PM No, Im loud and overly talkative. Cant stop talking and I do try! :(
Innattentiveness is part of innattentive adhd, ie: the daydreamy type and not the combined type. My psychologist said that overtalkativeness is part of hyperactivity, but innattentiveness is the other kind of adhd i suppose, although combined type also has strong features of innattentiveness, ie: talking manically but not actually listening to anyone else.
we are all doomed :(
just kidding! dont worry if you are a bit quiet mate, i think it might be better than being overly loud like me, although i am happy being that way too. :)

I'm the same way, though it's more my personal style to be quiet than feeling like I make a lot of noise.
Wintermute 03-02-09, 06:39 PM Somehow I manage to be really spacey and easily startled out of my little world (especially on the sales floor) and other times be super loud and talkative and hyper, usually whenever someone I'm comfortable with is around. I don't if that sounds like combined? I've been seriously confused about that lately, since i display many symptoms of both Hyperactivity and Innattentiveness.
breckskier 03-02-09, 09:39 PM I feel the same way. I have always been "the quiet kid" in school and with my group of friends. I never seem to know what to say for starters, but my mind is going like a million miles an hour, so I don't seem to notice how quiet I am being, since my mind is already occupied. I have been working on it and getting better, but still the quiet kid for the most part. Which is really not that bad.
I's actually drift between overtalkative, loud, etc, to quiet, distant, shy.
I'm generally a very quiet person. Its the innattentive add thing but its also just 'me' so i don't worry about it.
PinkRoxy 03-03-09, 12:53 AM yeah I can be the same. Im am pretty socially shy aswell, and I feel uncomfortable meeting new people until I get to know them, as much as I enjoy meeting new people but I seem a little quiet until I get to know them better. But Ive always enjoyed my own space aswell and also Ive always enjoyed a good chat and to socialise for hours on end, I guess it depends what mood Im in.
But yes I can understand where your coming from as I do feel like that sometimes around others but I do know when Im being quiet.
what I actually meant was, not just quiet, but virtually noiseless. I wear flats, I don't slam cupboard doors etc around (this is very french at work, to look busy I think!), and I don't have a loud voice, at all. - except after a couple of glasses of wine!
I am usually the quiet type. Unless I am both comfortable and in a really upbeat mood.
The real noise is inside, but its not coming out.
johnny s. 03-03-09, 08:20 AM stef, you sound like the opposite or some of the women I've worked with over the years. seems like they like to make as much noise as they can when they walk.... like to make sure everyone knows when they've entered a room.... they just like to generally make their presence known.
I'm quiet as far as talking goes. it used to shock me when people said I seemed to quiet and 'slow' inside. my mind is always racing!
so I think our racing minds just draw our attention inwards a lot. We notice what's going on around us a lot I think , but somehow we're more focused on what's going on inside.
my wife tells me I'm noisey a lot though - walking, closing things, opening things... but I think that's just her opinion because she's OCD :D
I have an extremely soft voice too, but not to my view. It's as if I have ear plugs in my ears or headphones and i'm talking fine to me but not to others. I don't get it! I also used to be shocked when I was told I was quiet, but now I don't look clueless when they tell me these days. Then sometimes people will go on with the amazement that I talk a lot when i'm interested, and are stumped when I become quiet again.
AbsentMindProf 03-03-09, 09:26 AM I have a tendency to scare people where I work. I'll be walking along, lost in thought, and I will just walk into the room without saying anything to anyone. Then, I happen to make some small noise right behind someone and they jump through the roof.
I never do that deliberately but....
:D
I am usually quiet in school. I also think the medication has made me more mellow. (I am already a mellow person). Another reason is because i need to pay full attention to the work/teacher. Also, most kids in my school are too frickin immature. I am too mature for most of the people. (This is High School i am talking about). When i am around someone intelligent i usually can have a good conversation. It doesn't matter anyway because in 10 years what are the chances i will still even know these kids? Not like im Anti Social if thats what your thinking.
I am inattentive ADD and I know EXACTLY what you are talking about often during my classes everyone around me is talking and I am sitting there not saying a word, granted i'm not exactly paying attention to my work. However, if I am with someone I know is willing to listen to me and is open-minded enough to have a intelligent conversation and sometimes will spew out what is going on in my mind.

I have to smile when I read this. I was the odd man out in my old office; everyone there was extremely loud and grating. The first time we went out together I startled everyone after a few drinks. :D
crazycat1990 03-12-09, 10:35 PM My mind can't seem to make its mind up! I can be quiet and shy with some people yet with others, I get on really well and go absolutely nutty! Wish I could be like it with everyone!
When I was with my friends in class at school I wouldn't shut up talking, yet if I was next to anyone else I would be more daydreamy and quiet.

Almost exactly how i am. I'm very quiet, i don't like slamming things or loud things around. The manager makes jokes like, oh my god..he talks. It's on my energy days where i can try to find something to say without stuttering or muttering my words. It's like i am not getting enough oxygen from my lungs when i talk. When i drink and have a nice buzz then i'm talkative and the super fast speech comes out.
