and i have an appointment with my doctor. it's a new doctor and i don't have a relationship with her yet but here are my issues:

i've been taking the wellbutrin exactly as prescribed and on the second day i believe that i noticed a real difference. i felt alert and on point. after that day, i haven't noticed those effects.

in that week, i have smoked pot. i know it's not advised but i couldn't find any concrete information saying that it was going to be harmful.[i'm very good with the internet so if there was something out there I would have found it] the things i did find were suggestive at best, and had the typical pharma slant on things.

i'm not prepared to tell this new doctor that i smoke. i will eventually, as i want this to be open relationship but we're not there yet. i won't be smoking anymore but do you think the THC might have neutralized the wellbutrin? or was i imagining what i thought was the medicine taking effect?

It could have been a placebo effect, or it could have been the chemical effects of THC on the brain somehow counter/modified the SNRI effect of the Wellbutrin. Either way, I would wait until your body neutralizes it's dose (≈2-3 weeks) and then gauge the effects.

I don't think the THC will have a permenant effect. That said, I feel smoking pot on any med which increases dopamine (Adderall, Wellbutrin, etc.) is a recipe for danger, as both pot and these meds do the same thing, and it could cause too much dopamine to be in your system. The same would apply to snorting crank or cocaine - all these drugs impact dopamine reuptake or release, then add the ADHD which is doing the same and it could lead to psychosis.

Nothing in neuroscience is concrete; it's all based on suggestive evidence and experimentation.

I would suggest that it's not a good idea to self medicate when taking Wellbutrin. Also, the fact that you didn't feel the effects of it after may be a bit misleading. I never "feel" anything when I take Wellbutrin XL and if I forget and miss a day I don't feel a difference during the day I miss either. This is great because I don't experience the side effects and also I don't feel "medicated". What I do feel is level and "normal", I feel like me, and I don't feel anxious, down, worried, or zoned out. That means it's working, not because I feel the affects but because I don't feel the negative troubling feelings I had before.

If there is one place to be honest it would be with your doctor. I don't think you need to develop and relationship to divuldge that you smoke pot. Maybe wait to speak about personal issues or events that are metionally driven or hard to talk about but something as simple (and may I say common) as self medicating with drugs/alcohol is not a big, dark, horrible piece of information.

I tended to drink regularly, and often way to much, before I started taking mine, and once I moved to 300mg I must say I never get the feeling that I need to plop down with Jack after work to unwind. My drinking was a symptom and it helped my doctor make desicions on my behalf.

Just my two cents. Keep us posted.
