Just a reminder to our USA members who do smoke......Federal cigarette taxes are going up from $0.39 to $1.01 as of April 1st, 2009.

So, if you've been toying with the idea of quitting, you now have extra motivation besides the obvious health benefits!

Some places have free Nicotine Replacement tools available.

I believe NY State Public Health has free Patches, Gum, Inhalers, etc. (We see the TV ads from Buffalo TV here in Toronto.)

I quit smoking a year ago this past January - I used Chantex to help me quit.

Congrats on staying quit for more than a year!! In three months it will be four years for me. Cudos to the researchers who develop drugs that help us so much.

Hm i don't think the slight increase in price will help motivate people to stop. The price of cigarettes in the UK is roughly 6GBP which is about 9USD and people still buy them.

Well, it isn't a "slight" increase really. Because of the tax increase and the prospect of more people quitting, the cigarette companies already have raised their prices to make up for the projected lost revenue.

Over $5-$6 a pack now here in Alabama.......and with this economy, people are going to need to quit just to pay their bills.

I quit smoking a year ago this past January - I used Chantex to help me quit.

FYI: Chantex is also branded as Wellbutrin.

I didn't know that about Chantix. It helped me stop smoking too.

I started back again after having quit for almost 7 mo.

I was thinking about going with the Chantix again, but had a siezure while on Welbutrin. Maybe not a good idea.

I bought a pack of cigs at Wal-Mart the other night. I really didn't pay attention(like always!) cuz I bought something else at the same time, but when I got home and looked at the price....

It was $5.25!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I almost had a cow!!

That make me want to stop!

I once took care of a little elderly woman with alzheimers. Once in a while she would ask for a cigarette. Then her daughter told her. "You quit Mama, you quit when cigarettes went up to $1.25 a pack. Do you know how much they are now? Over $4." So my little lady said "Then no, nevermind, that's ridiculous."

I quit smoking cigarettes about 10 years ago; however, I now smoke Backwoods cigars and they have already increased (here in OK) from $5.25 three weeks ago to $7 now. There is eight in a pack and the pack typically last 3 days.

Chantex is also branded as Wellbutrin

I am allergic to wellbutrin and I am not to chantix

Please do check these things out before posting as if you know because it can create a great deal of confusion.

As I noted below the chemical ingredients of chantix are not the same as wellbutrin-

chantix (http://www.drugs.com/chantix.html) chemical or generic name ( varenicline )

zyban (http://www.drugs.com/zyban.html) chemical or generic name (bupropion)

Wellbutrin (http://www.drugs.com/pdr/wellbutrin.html) Chemical or generic name (Bupropion hydrochloride)

I underlined the generic or chemical names as to draw the readers attention to the fact that it is zyban that is chemically identical to wellbutrin NOT Chantix

Wellbutrin is an antidepressant repackaged and resold as a smoking censatation drug

Now that is cleared up . . . .

Chantix blocks nicotine receptors when one smokes the receptors are blocked by the chantix thus the nicotine from being able to connect to said nicotine receptors in zee ole brain box - If there is no nicotine connection with nicotine receptors it decrease the "pleasure" aspect of smoking.

Nope....although, in order to help finance the Stimulus Package, the Federal Government is now looking into ways to tax secondhand smokers as well as primary smokers.....some of the plan's proponents have been quoted as saying "Hey, these secondhand smokers have been skirting the tax for years. It's about time we received something from all the tobacco they've inhaled without contributing a dime in tax revenue!" :D

Texas added a dollar tax to cigarettes a year ago and now with this we are really up there. I remember saying when they got to $5 a pack I was going to quit, now that they are $7 and I'm still smoking I guess I've moved my threshold to $10.

I did quit once with hypnosis, it was really neat and I used the patch for the "nic attacks" that cause the mood problems. Alas, I had a moment of weakness and smoked and now smoke more than before I quit.

I wish they would come out with something that worked that didn't require willpower, and not something like Chantix that has the severe side effects.

I was going to say the same thing about the Wellbutrin comment, definitely not the same thing at all.
