View Full Version : The reasons why I hate adderall
GinoGina 03-20-09, 07:21 AM First off, let me say that there is no reason to reply to this thread saying things like "it works for me" or "it saved my life." This is my opinion on why adderall sucks, and you don't have to agree. Okay, here we go:
1) I can't stop smoking when I am on adderall. Everyday that I take it I smoke a pack. Smokes somehow become remarkably delicious and extra smooth while on my addy. Too bad being a smoker is really uncool.
2) Adderall makes me smell. I release some kind of weird body order while on this drug. I generally am not a smelly person and most of the time smell like fresh Irish Spring soap. I typically shower once a day, but now that I am on the adderall my shower count is up to two. I don't know what it is with adderall but it defenitley is doing something to release this toxic reek from my pits and ball sack region everytime I take it. Deoderant is too little avail in this situation. The usual '24 hour protection' Right Guard promises is reduced to one or two at most on adderall.
Oh, and lets not forget the single beed of sweat that trickles down my side anytime I get too into my typing. And trust me, its not too hard to get really into an essay on 60mg of adderall.
3) I try not to take adderall everyday. I usually only use it on days when I have essays to write or exams to cram for. This started off succesfully, however studying was always a little bit more fun with a little more adderall. This lead to consistent bumps in my dose. Study sessions have gone from a measly 10mg to 60mg on typical occasions.
4) It makes my mouth dry. Having a dry mouth sucks.
5) This one goes hand in hand with the studying and tolerance issue. Once I pop one of these babies I can't help but to feel a strong urge to take one more. This often escalates from 3 to 4 to 5 to 6 pills over a period of a night. Each pill supposedly being my last. I tell myself I am not going to do anymore tonight, but the plan always seems to change. One peak at the glorious blue pharmacy bottle sitting next to me and my adderall impulse takes over (I should probably move that bottle). Before I know it, I am hunched over my desk pressing my cell phone onto those itsy bitsy XR balls listening to the soothing crunching sound with an evil grin spread across my face. Atleast I am getting an arm workout....I think.
6) And last but not least, my girlfriend *****es about it non-stop.
Although I say I hate adderall it has its upsides. Mostly when I am high on a lot of it...
Anyone else who despises adderall? I'd like to hear why?

Were you diagnosed with ADHD?
GinoGina 03-20-09, 07:45 AM I do have ADHD and perscribed 20mg XR daily. It makes studying easier and improves my concentration. However, I was able to handle myself before taking it while still achieving decent results. I am probably going to go off it. The negative factors are outweighing the benefits.

I think it is a good idea for you to go off of it if you are having such problems with it. I asked if you were diagnosed with ADHD because typically from what I have seen, the people who seem to be addicted to it are often people who do not have ADHD.
If you need help with your ADHD and don't want to be this out of control... I would recommend Strattera. It is a non stimulant medication. You will be able to study and help your other ADHD symptoms without the bad side effects.
As for my experiences with XR...it didn't do anything to me good or bad. I am a pretty small girl and I was on 60mg of XR and felt nothing. Odd but true.
GinoGina 03-20-09, 08:29 AM Thanks for the info Rayleigh.
I will look into Straterra. From what I know it provides the concentration benefits without the stimulating effect.
The stimulating nature of adderall is what is preventing me from quitting. I just enjoy it too much. It is probably wise for me to look into trying out a different drug.
Thanks

ThanksAt risk of playing arm chair psychologist, it appears that you have more going on besides ADD, namely addictive traits (smoking, taking extra doses of meds, enjoying the stimulating benefits). Perhaps you want to get that checked out as well.
Just my 2 cents. Good luck.

Boy do I understand you on that one lol... I just posted a thread about it like last week to see if I was the only one who smoked too much on adderall. There are days I can easily smoke over a pack if I'm not careful. I try so hard not to chain smoke when I take adderall but it's sometimes damn near impossible...I just want a cigarette constantly and like you said, they taste so much better for some reason! The only times I'm able to keep myself from smoking too much is if I'm in a situation where I can't smoke (at work, in class, etc.) If I'm just at home studying or whatever I'll try my hardest to limit how many cigarettes I have but my obnoxious cravings almost always override my effort. :( My boyfriend who I live with doesn't smoke and thinks it's ridiculous how much I smoke on adderall... I know it must seem absolutely disgusting to non-smokers... but I can't freaking help it!

Not a good idea. Strattera is a non stimulant and is linked with depression. I for one took it when I was younger not in control of what i put into my body I was depressed and got a phobia of choking meaning I was afraid to eat. Strattera is nasty s**t.

That is just your experience though. I know people who have said great things about strattera. Each person is different and basically they get no more risky than adderall.

Have you tried methylphenidate (Ritalin, Concerta, etc.)? Some people say that it's 'duller' than Adderall. You might get the concentration boost from it without the distracting 'fun-ness' of Adderall.
About Strattera: It's true that everyone is different, but Strattera is not a first-line treatment and does not have anything close to the track record of stimulants. The side effects are generally harsher, and more people get the bad ones than do people on Adderall. Not to mention it takes very long to kick in. It isn't just an individual thing. But Strattera does have benefits, so don't rule it out.
Sehnsucht 03-26-09, 09:34 AM Ive been on Adderall for years so I know where youre coming from. After a life changing event(jail)I had I finally at the age of 34 got sick and tired of being sick and tired. The results being 13 months of group therapy and running a gauntlet of 8 different psych docs and therapists. I understand the smoking compulsion too. Besides the learned behavior youve taught yourself over years of smoking, the whole having a cigarette in your hand etc, the nicotine actually has been shown to boost your adderall effects but only for 10 or 20 min if that. I know ppl are different but those are usually accepted as the working theories as to why smoking becomes a super obsession while on addy.
With the help of Chantix, I have been smoke free for a month now despite my 110mg/day Adderall dosage-legaly prescribed mind you. If you want to change things while on a drug that makes you hyperfocus my advice would be to really think about what you want to change like smoking and actually accept that its what you want to do. Also and this is HUGE-change your enviroment as much as you can for awhile. Dont hang out with other smokers and/or drinkers, avoid them like the plague. GOT to have some kind of a plan for changing things and stick to it, then youll be hyperfocusing on these other good things instead of things like smoking.
Chantix worked for me once before even though I started back up after a couple months. So that lasted a couple of months but once again was determined to quit and never pick another one up again. So its been a month now without smoking. Chantix doesnt work for everybody and will turn your mind into a burning hellhouse guaranteed. But from my experience after a week of it you wont even think about a cigarette. Just dont hang around other smokers at all! Thats what started me up the last time.
Therapy-you say youre diagnosed. Do you go to therapy? Lots of therapy has been more helpful to me than any med Ive ever taken. Even if its just a local AA meeting just go sit and listen.
Lastly-Dexedrine-I will be slowly changing over to it soon and am very much looking forward to it. The initial high you get with Adderall, euphoria etc., isnt there with dex for most ppl. The changeover will be hard at first but I know after about a week the dex will be just plain superior. Smoothest and most beneficial stim Ive ever done. That was when I was in high school though. Then the adderalls came to market in what mustve been the biggest sales push Ive ever seen. Next thing I knew I was on addy for years on end. Doctors would just scoff at dex insisting that the addy was better. Generally it isnt...at all..
Doesnt mean its weaker its just pure d-amphetamine 100%. Dont worry about your studies with it youll do just fine prbly even better as you shouldnt have the over amped high that addy gives you.
If youre grinding up XR beads and taking them like Pez...seriously...get a shrink. One that specializes in ADHD/Learning disabilities etc. if you can. If youre that hooked then going off stims completely would be a REALLY bad idea. Being a crazed junky bordering on total psychosis as you go through withdrawl isnt going to help anybody. Tough one dude...hope youre able to manage....good luck
