View Full Version : Yep so I didn't sleep a wink last night
lacey999 03-20-09, 12:58 PM  Up all night....still up. I changed my dose of adderall to 30 mg which has so far been going good. Last night I just couldn't sleep though but I don't know if it is the adderall. Obviously adderall is known for causing people to be physically wide awake at night, but that wasn't exactly what I felt. I didn't feel hyper or jittery. It was more like my mind kept talking when I wanted to sleep. It was listing all the things I wanted to do, and I was just thinking about life. Not in a bad way but in a good positive excited way. I didn't even take adderall anywhere near bed time. Right now I am still not really tired. If adderall leaves your system within 3-6 hours, how come well after that I still felt effets from it? Is this because I just stated a higher dose?
fruitsalad2005 03-20-09, 01:22 PM That has happened to me a few times, always when I take adderall for the first time in awhile. I didn't have my prescription filled regularly for almost a year when I was on a different insurance, so I would sometimes go a couple months without taking an adderall. Your dose being increased is probably the reason for not being able to sleep. Are you taking regular adderall or xr? Adderall xr is generally supposed to last like 8 hours, but if you're not used to it, 30 mg can keep you up forever. Seriously.. last time I took 30 mg xr after not taking it for awhile, I was still wide awake at 4 am after taking it around 9 am. I truly felt like I was exhausted and wanted to sleep, but it was impossible. To me trying to fall asleep on adderall makes me feel like there are eyes inside my head that are just wide open... its weird and can be pretty frustrating. You might want to take it earlier until you get used to it. There's been a couple times I've had to go to work on no sleep and take more adderall just to get through the day. And while adderall is pretty powerful it can only do so much for you if you haven't slept. On top of that, crashing after being on adderall all day, not sleeping and then being on adderall all day again is really not that fun. So like I said, I would reccomend taking your adderall a little earlier until you're used to the higher dose.

Your inability to sleep could be indicative of a co-morbid anxiety disorder. I have OCD and I used to have the same sleep issue as yourself. Now, I am on Clonazepam (.05 mg.) and I fall asleep within 15 minutes. You might want to consider that next time you see your psychiatrist.
lacey999 03-20-09, 01:31 PM I will give it a little more time. I am on IR by the way. It is probably just due to my increase. I suppose it's better than sleeping too much...I hate being tired all the time.

I get this without my medication! I'm ADD w/o hyperactivity, but to me that's a misleading diagnosis. I have an extremely hyper mind. ZOOOOOM! It goes a million miles a minute (say that ten times! :p) but the Addy helps calm it down. I'm also GAD, which with the ADD they just feed into each other and I get loops of obsessive, negative thoughts. So far, just treating the ADD has helped with my anxiety.
If you are getting this from the Adderall, I would think you're taking too much. You're probably shooting outside the theraputic window. Or, it could just be a fluke and you'll sleep fine from here on out. *shrug*
Sorry, I'm totally rambling. I didn't take my meds today.

This is very likely. I didn't sleep but 3 1/2 hours the first night (had a really good book!), then was fine after that. Ritalin did the same sort of thing every week when I took a day off.

You sound like me :D lol. I am not hyper physically I am hyper mentally a lot of the times. Thought after thought...I have anxiety disorder too (not diagnosed, but it's obvious). Adderall kind of helps it so far. It took my negative constant thoughts to positive constant thoughts, I guess that's a start! lol Eventually I think my sleeping will be back on track. I cannot afford anxiety medications when I am paying so much for adderall per month as it is. It isn't so bad that I need to get pills for it anyway. I have to consider the fact that I haven't been working out at all for months, so my body is never tired out during the day. God now I have to start working out again. Boo :(
