View Full Version : Should one limit getting on the computer when taking Adderall?
fredonian 03-23-09, 10:25 PM Maybe it's just me, but I've come to think that I parhaps need to avoid getting on my computer after taking my dose of adderall xr. While I anticipate that I will only be on it for a brief time, I ultimately end up being on it for hours on end. Time just seems to slip bye like water, and I end up missing out on getting more important things done around the house during my offtime. I also notice a better sense (passing) of timeing when I do REAL things as opposed to VIRTUAL activities. Can anyone relate?
YES! This happens to me with Adderall and Dex, though with Adderall it's worse. I literally don't allow myself to even turn on my computer when I get home from work, until after I've showered and cleaned the apartment and finished the laundry or whatever else I needed to do. Otherwise I'll go to check my email, thinking to take 10 minutes, and it turns into 3 hours of Wikipedia and YouTube.
hollywood 03-23-09, 10:54 PM the internet is the superhighway to actively daydream.
amberamber 03-23-09, 11:19 PM Yep, I have this problem too. On the plus side, I've learned a whole lot during these hyperfocus sessions!
A good way for me to avoid this is to leave it off until I've accomplished most of what I had planned for the day. But if you're like me and don't trust yourself not to sneak over and turn it on, there is this amazing Firefox add on. LeechBlock (https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/4476) You can limit the time you spend online, or just specific sites. I have a few sites that I've prohibited myself from spending more than 15 minutes per hour on. Of course, if you don't have Firefox, or spend a lot of time offline, this is no help.
CDRacingZX6R 03-24-09, 05:03 PM I am the kind of guy that spends way to much time on the computer without medication. Always bouncing around, from page to page with no real purpose..
Since I started taking Adderall.. I find doing that is more boring. And I spend significantly less time on the computer than normal because it bores me. I'd rather be reading, or outdoors, or something productive.
Is that odd?
No, it's not odd. I think that is usually the case for people who have a hyperactive element to their ADHD, without medication. On meds, they're less fidgety and less susceptible to the eye-brain stimulation that hours of Internet can provide.
But with inattentive types, like me, meds can really play into the natural inclination to sit still. On meds, I want to sit still and focus on something, whereas without meds, I want to sit still and daydream. Either way, I never have much physical energy to get up and go out. Meds sharpen my concentration and allow me to zero in on one task, but they don't do anything about the need for physical stillness. Seems like computers are visual stimulation for hyperactives, but they're passive activities for inattentives.
somuchbetter 03-24-09, 11:58 PM I think I'm just addicted to the computer in general, meds or not.
Sehnsucht 03-26-09, 08:53 AM This was a HUGE problem for me for a long time until I finally noticed that being out and about doing different things helps my depression as well as my ADHD. Now I just turn my pc off after a couple hours at the most and just go outside.

ooh, that looks great and exactly what i need haha. i haven't started adderall yet, but on my own i have a long list of sites i compulsively check every few minutes even though i won't even be on one for longer than five minutes at a time due to ADD but i still have to refresh the page all day. so annoying! thanks for the link!
Tylerlee17 03-26-09, 08:18 PM Adderall helps you focus, but not necessarily on what's important. That my friend, is up to you =P
EDIT: Just thought I should say while I'm typing this I'm playing Call of Duty World at War while knowing I have my 2nd Midterm in a class tomorrow. Got the notes out beside me just playing away probably 2 hours now. Yeah I'll regret it when I get like 5 hours of sleep and I've been studying till the early AM hours but hey, knowing that I can do that is okay with me. We all crack down on the things we dislike doing but are necessary to our lives at some point.
dkaiser 03-27-09, 08:53 PM Yes I try to limit internet use when I take an Adderall, I can get really engrossed in some stupid stuff.
dgessler 03-28-09, 05:28 PM Definitely. I have noticed for me that time FLIES when I'm off task on my computer. In contrast, I've noticed time goes SO SLOW when I'm doing other things such as cleaning/doing laundry, washing dishes, etc.
luvlife 03-28-09, 06:39 PM I will stay on the computer for 8 hours just looking up anything. i have googled anything that come in my mind. the other night i found a website on the cemeterys in our town and who was buried there. it took me four or five hours. now i have learned how to google in addresses and get pictures. i can't wait until my boyfriend leave for work so i can get online and will stay until he get home. somedays i will not bath, because i am so focused on what i am doing (which is nothing) i need to find a job and if i can't place applications online then i will not go.
NekoGirl 03-28-09, 09:30 PM Yes!
When not medicated, I'm in a haze so my refuge can become the computer. After trying to get **** accomplished, I eventually just give up and get online.
When I'm on Adderall, I get on the computer and hyperfocus on it as the night slips away. What seems like an hour is really three. I don't always do this, but yeah the computer is dangerous when my brain is "on"!
Wow, I could have written some of these posts! Even when I'm not medicated I spend more time online than I should... but when I'm medicated, everything else seems to fade into the background, and whatever website I'm looking at is the most interesting thing in the world.
What sucks is that I have to use my computer a lot for homework purposes, because I am taking independent study classes in which I have to read chapters and then write a few pages on them to be sent in to my professors. If I hit a roadblock in my homework, or even if I just get bored and need a "break," I'll minimize my Word screen and pop online--for like two or three HOURS. I don't intend to spend that much time online, and I'm usually ****ed at myself when I realize what I've done... but I can't seem to stop it, unless it is the night before the assignment is due--and then the stress keeps me going.
I have the same issue with video games. Any game made by Bethesda Softworks is evil-- Oblivion and Fallout 3 are first person RPGs where the story just sucks you in and won't let go. Argh!
I'm glad that others on Adderall have this problem...well, not glad that you have a problem, but that I'm not the only one who gets this way when medicated.
Grey Kameleon 03-29-09, 03:09 PM Adderall is like putting on glasses for the first time. You can suddenly see how amazing the internet is. Be careful what you look at when wearing those glasses.
BTCruiser 03-29-09, 05:57 PM I have this problem often. I am very productive at work when I switch between work tasks, but when I am just randomly surfing, I find myself writing out long, long posts on various boards when I'm hyperfocusing. It just takes some self-discipline to pull myself away. If I'm busy, I don't have the problem because I can get lost in work, and not worry - but otherwise, it's a trial to stop typing out book-length posts.

As an Internet marketing consultant and blogger I can certainly relate. However, in my line of work it's a damn miracle. I work like a machine and it's great. But, I've found that whatever I'm doing is that way. If I'm just playing around on the computer or if I'm cleaning the house. Whatever you're doing you'll do it to the extreme.
A PC to an Adderall user is like Nicotine to a cigarette smoker.
It's impossible to resist!
