View Full Version : Calves hurt/ache
Ravenlock 03-26-09, 12:52 PM I know this might sound strange but has anyone ever had their calves ache/hurt for the whole day after taking Adderall? They are guaranteed to hurt if I take adderall but if I take Ritalin they don't hurt at all or very slightly. The only problem is Ritalin has almost no affect on me, where Adderall works like a charm.
And before someone asks, I am not dehydrated or low on vitamins or minerals. Just wondering if anyone has ever experienced this before and how they coped with it.
Also, has anyone had to go off of Adderall because of side-effects and found another stimulant that worked just as good or almost as good as Adderral?
only thing close was my first couple of weeks titrating on adderall and I hit a dose above my target dose, but it was my calves cramping up. A couple of bananas cured that right up. Are you sure you're getting your potassium in? there's only 2% potassium on most common vitamins, even individual potassium supplements only contain 2% per pill.

Highly doubtful. The high blood pressure from the Adderall would force most clots free. Plus, if he doesn't have a clotting disorder, or spend 6-8+ hours at a time sitting down with minimal movement, then the odds of him getting a clot are slim to none.
I agree with ecu20, its a potassium deficiency. I've had similar problems in the past where my calves had cramped up, but after eating a couple bananas the problem went away almost immediately.
You tend to see people on Adderall being malnourished as a result of the appetite suppression. Then, after a while they develop vitamin and mineral deficiencies. You also may get magnesium deficiencies, etc from the Adderall (not necessarily linked to malnourishment - but because of the drug).
Ravenlock 03-27-09, 10:11 AM Thanks for the replies all. I will try to eat a bunch of bananas and see if it helps.
The only thing that is weird is if I don't take an Adderall I am totally fine - no pains at all. That's what led me to believe that perhaps it was just one of those strange side effects that some people get form Adderall. Like I said, Ritalin doesn't give me that side effect, but it also barely does anything for me.
DarkCode 03-27-09, 05:21 PM You also experience muscle tension on Adderall, which can lead to the pain. Its from your calf muscles constantly contracting - similar experience to when you have a potassium deficiency.

Muscle cramps are common, usually because of dehydration and lack of vitamin/minerals. If you replenish with something like Gatorade instead of just water, it will most likely help out.;)
elizabethbdn 03-31-09, 02:37 PM I take adderall 20 mg immediate release 4 to 5 times a day and I definitly experince the aching legs. My psych said to stretch out my legs or go for a walk. Especially at night i have the aching and sometimes pain. I have tried Ritalin, strattera, and concerta. The Ritalin had hardly any effect and the Strattera and Concerta made me so physically ill I could not tolerate them. If adderall works for you I say stick with it but as always check with your doctor about the aching legs. Good Luck
Old School MBD 03-31-09, 02:48 PM I am new to this (1st week adderall xr 20mg), however my research shows that adderall contricts blood vessals.
That coupled with the fact that adderal activates the "fight or flight" section of the brain, whitch directs more blood flow to your brain, arms, and core can lead to cold feet (me) and/or cramps.
I got some support socks at the pharmacy (granny socks) that have helped with the cold feet, and are also suggested for travelers to prevent deep vein thrimbosis (dvt), and promoted to help people with heavy, tired legs.
They go up to the kneecap, and promote better leg ciculation.
I belive that they could help with your legs
Ravenlock 04-01-09, 05:45 PM Thank you all for the advice. I am been drinking a ton of water everyday and it seems to be helping some. I didn't think was was dehydrated but maybe I really was.
The support socks sounds like they might be worth a try too. You just get those at the pharmacy?
