View Full Version : Pharmacists are clueless about generic adderall XR
twinch42085 03-26-09, 01:31 PM Hi all,
I have been calling several pharmacies where I live and they all tell me that they have heard nothing about generic adderall XR being distributed on April 1st, 2009.
Am I missing something or is all of this just a hoax to get our anticipation boiling?
Thanks,
Twinch :-)
firstdesserts 03-26-09, 01:59 PM I have found the same thing. Even a visit to the generic maker's company website didn't lead anywhere.
Tylerlee17 03-26-09, 02:58 PM Same issue here, I'm not quite sure why they aren't up to speed on things. The only thing I can say for sure is according to the legal agreement between Shire, Inc. and Barr Pharmaceuticals, Barr can legally manufacture Adderall XR in the generic form starting April 1, 2009. Patents are funny business.. especially when they rake in over 6 billion dollars of income for yours.
chrissaleen 03-27-09, 10:05 AM I called my Pharmacy asking this question. They had no idea either. When I told them the internet is stating april 1 st (april fool!) because shire has settled
litigation that was ongoing with respect to Adderall XR.
http://www.redorbit.com/news/health/618963/shire_and_barr_settle_adderall_xr_litigation/index.html
My pharmacists said it takes time to set things in place with the DEA and all the paperwork. So maybe the first half of april or so. But that was just his
opinion.
aj373ku 03-27-09, 11:28 AM It is because they do not tell us. Sometimes all we get is a few days notice. Remember pharmacies do get their drugs directly from the manufacturer. We get them from a wholesaler who gets it from the manufacturer.<?xml:namespace prefix = o ns = "urn:schemas-microsoft-com:office:office" /><o:p></o:p>
On big name sellers the company will monitor things closely so as soon as the generic comes out it can be auto shipped to the pharmacy. You cannot auto ship a C-II. If Barr can begin shipping on April 1st it could be weeks to a month before it hits the shelf. <o:p></o:p>
vporter 03-27-09, 01:57 PM On April 1st is that legally distributing or manufacturing? If it's manufacturing then it's going to be a while.
aj373ku 03-27-09, 04:00 PM That is the first day they can legally sell it without violating Shire's patent.
The big problems happen when there is pending litigation. Take Plavix for example. The generic hit the market while there was still a pending lawsuit. The lawsuit was won by Bristol-Myers Squibb, the maker of Plavix, so the generic could no longer be sold.
We go through the headache of getting the generic. Wait for the insurance companys to catch up so they will pay for it. So we switch all these people from a really expensive Plavix to the really cheap generic. Two months later we have to do it all over again in reverese. People were ****ed and your friendly pharmacist took the brunt of the complaining.
Hopefully there won't be the same kind of problem with Adderall XR.
dkaiser 03-27-09, 08:48 PM I haven't heard anything about it yet, but I can't believe it's finally going to happen. I will try it, but I don't care for generics - which are not "identical" to brand name and can have different effects in my experience. My insurance makes my Adderall XR affordable, but once I'n off that insurance and on my own I might be more down for cheap generic XR.
jbone03si 03-27-09, 09:16 PM I always look on this site for advice and I just had to let you guys know about this. My wife works for Walgreens and they had a conference call last Fri about the generic adderall. All store managers and Pharmacy manager were required to sit in on the call. Gernerics are huge for Walgreens so they are on the ball with this release.
Fredrow 03-28-09, 07:12 PM WOW, I love this site.... I have been looking around all day today for questions about when Adderall XR will become generic....
This question is for jnone03si------- So do you think Walgreens will have it available on April 1st?? I only ask because I just got my refill slip from my doctor on 3-26-09 and it's for 30 days worth. I have been paying for my perceptions myself and even with my Walgreens discount card it comes to around $170 for it. I'm trying to hold out as long as I can before I pick them up..... So any feed back would be great....
salukiboy 03-29-09, 03:29 PM Hey everyone, I started looking up generic Adderall XR this weekend once I did the math on my FSA and saw that I was going to have to pay out of pocket for the last two months this year. I read the rumors floating about April 1st (which would be the cruelest April Fools prank since when South Park ran an April fools when we all expected to find out who was Cartman's Dad). I did some investigating.
I went to CVS, they did not have any info, told me to check back in April.
I went to Wal-Mart, see #1.
I went to Walgreen's an hour ago. The pharmicist said it was in their system, which meant that it would be available within a month or two. Meaning it could come tomorrow, it could come May. Also I asked about their generic program that they run with the $1 a week copay. IT WILL NOT BE COVERED UNDER WALGREEN'S $1 A WEEK GENERIC PROGRAM. It will be 100 bucks a month less for the 10mg pill without any insurance. So I would check your prescription plan, and see how much less it will run you for the copay.
I think mine goes down from 40 to 20...or maybe 10, I'm not sure. All I know is once I make the switch, I'll be able to not have to pay out of pocket by the end of the year as long as an emergency doesn't come up, God willing.
I don't know if other places that have the $4 dollar a month copay will have it in their system, but at least I know that this generic form of XR is not just a rumor. This has been an awesome weekend for me financially, and it just got even better. :)
Hope the info I found was helpful. I can't site what I said, and this is my first post, so I'd be skeptical too of what I just posted. Call your local Walgreens to comfirm what I just said if that will make you feel better.
Take care!
DC
Fredrow 03-29-09, 09:14 PM Yeah I just called my local Walgreens and they didnt even know what is going on yet, it's no even in their system yet. So I guess I will just pick up my next script and pay $170 for this next month, damn that sucks, money wise.....
Hi,
I just tried to get my Adderall XR filled and my insurance (Tricare) will not fill it anymore. The generic is supposed to be out soon. I called and got a waiver so I can get this one filled. But I'm supposed to ask my Dr. to write for the generic.
Is this happening to anyone else?

That is another of the problems with a new generic. When insurance companies have the drug loaded in thier system before the pharmacy does.
It happens in reverse as well. You get the generic and it takes a week for the insurance companies to update thier system.
Fun stuff!
chrissaleen 03-31-09, 12:52 AM my story is . I asked about when the generic XR is available, because thats what my doc gave me.. not that I wanted it .. far from .. I wanted dexedrine boosters
2 times a day and only 5 mg each .. with a 40 mg vyvanse being the main dose first thing as I wake up . along with one of the 5mg dexys.
I want to go back to vyvanse but do not know what do to with almost 500 dollars worth of amphetamines. I am not going to give it away .. I am not going to sell it(stupid) but worst of all .. I don't really want to even take it
to help my issues with ADD because the side effects from Adderall suck, but it doesn't work nearly as good as vyvanse by itself. If my she doctor realized my reasoning for my request I would donate the 57 20mg adderall to some hospital to help the homeless. or someone..
sounds stupid but .. I would rather pay 123 bucks a month for vyvanse for myself with some IR boosters. as well as 123 bucks for my autistic son's vyvanse dose. But I cannot reason with a psychiatrist's reasoning to deny such a small IR dexedrine dose of 5 mg 2xday with vyavanse 40 mg.
some people are just so stubborn and narrow minded.
I managed to fight through my 8-9 pm quasi- narcolepsy for the first time..
It was not pleasant. 20 yawns later.. I might actually go to bed.
my what a tangled web we weave. Its a struggle to get trained doctors to believe what our bodies are telling us to tell them... dumbama will surely make it worse.. (sorry no offense to the mindless cattle who actually voted for this guy.. dow drops nearly 300 points today.. geez thats a first a sitting pres fires a large companie's CEO... lookout france here comes the united socialists of america...
chrissaleen 03-31-09, 12:58 AM there I go ranting.. sorry folks .. frustration boiling over.. because logic is disregarded. I am a person of logic . After talikng to my doc in the next few days. I may have to look elsewhere.
all on my own pocketbook ..
On April 1st is that legally distributing or manufacturing? If it's manufacturing then it's going to be a while.
Bingo!
Hopefully this will not be another April Fool's joke in order to delay the release of generic adderall XR for another year.
Tylerlee17 03-31-09, 12:03 PM It's been posted every where for over a year now. That is, April 1st will be the date they can start working on it (not sure if it's manufacturing, produce, or distribute). But the generic will be made by Barr Labs.. not sure if any of you've had their instant release Adderall or like it, personally I think it's like a freakin placebo pill but that's just me.

Have you tried generic IR?
Fredrow 03-31-09, 03:14 PM Have you tried generic IR?
No my doctor won't put me on IR.... Not really sure why, I have tried.....

Glad I'm not the only one. Barr definitely has been the worst generic version for me, not only would it hardly work, the crash was rough compared to any other generics.

Wow. I'd switch docs if I were you. That's ridiculous to pay so much for your medication when a simple med switch could save you hundreds of dollars. I hate seeing people get pushed around by their doctors like that!!
janie1234 04-06-09, 11:12 AM i went yesterday to refill my sons adderall xr and now all of a sudden it's 55$ supposeably a tier 5, i'm thinking the issue is that generics are now "suppose" to be available, yet no one has them. I am awaiting a call from my insurance plan to explain to me the sudden increase in prices, their website still shows it as tier 3, which should be for me his usual 30$. I also found this information today that the new adderall xr in generic will be made by Teva

Fredrow 04-07-09, 08:01 PM Has anyone bought the Generic Adderall XR yet??
timmy054 04-07-09, 08:26 PM i work in the a pharmacy and we got the generic adderall xr yesterday.:D
twinch42085 04-07-09, 08:27 PM Hi all,
I have not bought generic XR but I did have my script for adderall XR 20mg filled yesterday. I told the pharmacist that I wanted name branf because I do not trust the new generic XR enough to buy it yet;
dm3040krag 04-14-09, 10:44 AM Regarding the "generic" Adderall XR. It is not a FDA approved generic - it is basically an Authorized co-Brand. If you look at the FDA website, you will see there are no Therapeutic Equivalents.
http://www.accessdata.fda.gov/scripts/cder/drugsatfda/index.cfm?fuseaction=Search.DrugDetails
(Put Adderall in the search box)
What does that mean? Your insurance company may not consider it a generic. Be sure to have the pharmacist check the price before you pay versus the Brand.
The price of this "generic" is very expensive, basically only 10% cheaper than the brand. But 10% is 10%.
Also regarding availability - pharmacies have to fill out DEA paperwork to get a C-II drug - meaning that it may take awhile to get the medication in house.
Bottom line - have your pharmacist check the price for both the brand and this generic. You never know what they will do - every insurance company is different.
lateralg 04-14-09, 09:26 PM * The good news:
Local Walgreens expects to have generic Adderall XR in stock this week.
* The bad news:
My insurance (HealthNet) prescription provider (CVS Caremark) gave me the following prices for 90-day supply (1/day) of 30 mg capsules:
Brand name Adderall XR = $215
Generic Aderall XR = $215
Has anyone seen any different reliable cost figures for the generic?
Old School MBD 04-15-09, 01:50 PM "The Medicine Shoppe" chain of drug stores has it in their supply chain. Will be in my local store friday (4-17-09). I see the DR. Monday (420)
She is not excited about generics, I will she what she says.
I have been taking the generic xr for about a week now and I can not tell the difference. I have the same level of focus and no new side effects. I am so glad it is generic now.
Leela
cairysse 04-15-09, 02:07 PM yeah but its still way more expensive (like $5 a pop?) than the ir ($1 per tablet) for a self-pay
does anyone know of any PAP's for it? that would be awesome bc i liked the xr's much more than the ir's.

$215 for 90 days sounds cheap to me, thats only $2.30 per pill, like $70 a month. I was paying $178 for 30-day supply (1/day), I have to fill up again in about 2 weeks, so I hope they have the generic XR in......
cairysse 04-16-09, 12:56 PM i got a price of $315 from walgreens for #60 and $300 for #60 from target pharmacy (where i currently go). wal-mart didnt have them yet. i havnt tried CVS but i dont expect them to be much cheaper than walgreens. i'm in houston, tx. is location making a price difference?
dex's mom 04-20-09, 02:51 PM I went to the pharmacy today to get my Adderall XR 15 mg filled and was asked if I wanted the generic. I said no, that I would stick with what I have been taking for the past two years. I was told that they just got the generic last week and that some insurance companies would only fill the generic. My pharmacist tried to fill my Rx with Addreall XR but the insurance co came back saying that I had to try or test the generic. It made me feel like a lab rat! I filled it with the generic, which only saved me $5. She told me that I could get my Dr to say that the brand name was medically necessary, which I plan on doing, but in the meantime, I somewhat freaking out. I'm scared and afraid to take the generic because it's different than what I'm used to. Have there been any different side effects with the generic? Has anyone experienced anything different? Is it the same exact chemical make-up? Any help would be greatly appreciated!
lateralg 04-20-09, 03:35 PM This may help.
