View Full Version : EXTREME weight loss on Adderall XR...
oxcheerinchicxo 03-26-09, 10:49 PM Hey everyone.
I'm 21 years old, and began taking 40 mg daily of Adderall XR in November after having unsuccessful effects with both Strattera and Wellbutrin. It's working extremely effectively for me. I used to be so spacey, disorganized, and flustered and the Adderall really gets me focused and clears my head. I don't experience any "crash" like I've read in some of these threads, I only notice myself getting spacey and a bit tired around 8-9 at night.
I'm extremely concerned because I've lost a significant amount of weight on this medication. I've always been tiny, I'm a 5'0 petite girl whose average weight is 100. When I began taking the medication I weighed 105, within four weeks I was down to 88 pounds. I literally never ate, and if I did it would be less than 500 calories a day. Sometimes I would go an entire 24+ hour period without consuming anything. I had absolutely no desire to eat, and I'm a senior in college, so cooking for myself just won't happen. I even stopped menstruating for a bit.
I gained about 15 pounds over my Christmas break when I was home. Since starting back at school second semester, I have been more attentive to me weight and diet, but I've slowly been losing weight again over the past three weeks. I'm back down to 90 pounds, and some people have expressed their concerns for me, because I literally look like a skeleton.
Now, I've had some amazing experiences since starting the Adderall, and the only side effect I'm experiencing is this weight loss. I've always been small, and my metabolism has always been fast. I haven't had success with any other ADHD medications, so I don't really want to switch to anything else. I'm also quite content with my dosing, in relation to how I feel throughout the day.
Has this happened to anyone else? Does anybody have any tips for me on how to gain weight? I consume probably less than 1000 calories a day, and I know that's absolutely nothing. Are there any protein/carbohydrate drinks I could substitute as a meal?
Thanks for any help!

Seems like this has happened to a lot of people. Even with my very short duration on Adderall, I have lost a lot more weight than normal exercise and diet.
Aside from your family and friends voicing concerns, your doctor might feel that your weight loss could be detrimental to your health if it keeps going down.
How do you take the 40mg? Seems a lot of people here eat a big meal for breakfast, then take a dosage. After it starts to wear off, eat again then take a second dosage (assuming your splitting it into 20am/20pm.
For me, once the crash comes I'm starving. So I get enough food for the most part as long as I time things well.
Only1Jomo 03-27-09, 12:40 AM I take adderall IR and have the same experience. I started taking it on the 12th of March and have lost 10 lbs. Now I definately need to lose the weight but I want to be as healthy about it as possible. I have started being very cautious about making sure I get as close to 1000-1200 caleries per day (doc says thats safe). When I cant cook, I go to places like subway where I can see the calories and make healthier choices, El pollo loco is good too. Until I get used to it, I put it on my "to do" list so I dont space out and forget. It is slowly becoming as important to me as paying my bills, doing homework etc.
RedSkittles 03-27-09, 01:24 AM this happened to me with conserta. To gain weight i drank ensure, but when all you eat is soda crackers and a milk smoothy thing you get a headache, so i used ibprofine and moved on to dexitrine
DarkCode 03-27-09, 08:07 AM Lower your dose, start exercising (weight lifting - not a lot of cardio). Start eating 1g of protein per pound of muscle per day to prevent muscle loss. And start eating every 2-3 hours. Anything, everything, just something.
You can't go forever with eating nothing. Start taking multi-vitamins, get yourself a gallon of milk a week to go through, and stay away from sugary soft drinks. Start drinking lots of water, and stop eating any foods high in sodium - salty foods say goodbye to. No more fast food. Get yourself powerbars, cliff bars, those massive Gatorade jugs at the store, and plenty of frozen meals.
I'm in college too, so I know the feeling about not cooking for myself. But you *have* to eat, and you need to eat healthy. Get yourself a good friend, or roommate to help with managing your diet appropriately. After a while you learn to keep it up yourself.
I'm personally on a special diet nowadays, high protein, low fat, with plenty of carbohydrates. Then again, I'm at the gym everyday 2 hours, and I'm building mass. But just because I take Adderall and experience the same appetite suppression you experience does *not* mean I am not hungry. Your still hungry no matter what. You need food to keep the drug working effectively, and for women especially, you can't go a long time with anorexic behavior because you can stop your menstraul cycle altogether if you remain malnourished over a long period of time. You need a certain body fat level. Go to GNC and get yourself some weight gainer if you have to, just something.
oxcheerinchicxo 03-27-09, 10:33 AM I usually take my first 20 somewhere around 7 to 9, depending on when I wake up/my class schedule, and my second dosage around 2 or 3. Breakfast has always been an issue for me, even before I started the medication I never ate breakfast because I never have an urge to eat until around noon or so. Sometimes I just force myself to eat a bowl of Cream of Wheat, but there's hardly any calories in that.
When I'm done my classes it's lunchtime, and if I try to eat I literally gag trying to force it down. Usually I'm so wrapped up in studying, homework, or running around campus for various meetings that I don't even think about eating.
I take my next dose, and then go to crew practice. I don't row, I'm a coxswain, and I've stopped running with my rowers because I don't want to do cardio and risk losing anymore weight.
Then I get back to campus around 7 or so. I usually have about an hour break before I need to attend some sorority event. So I usually take a shower.
I literally run around all day, and eating is a struggle because I don't stop to think about it, nor am I hungry. I went until 8 just yesterday, started to feel light-headed and tired, before I realized I hadn't eaten anything all day, and barely ate anything the day before. It was still a struggle to force something down, and I was full within a couple bites.
I think that if maybe I started drinking Ensure or another type of meal drink at various intervals in the day, it might stimulate my apetite, and hopefully gradually increase my tolerance for food.
GinoGina 03-27-09, 02:48 PM Being 88 pounds is extremley dangerous. You need to get calories in you. It doesn't matter how, just do it. I would cosnider buying a weigh gaining supplement, similar to what those bodybuilders take when they want to put on muscle. A supplement called Mammoth 2500 would be perfect for you. Has 1500 cals per serving, you mix it with milk and it tastes like chocolate milk. If you don't want to buy a supplement start choosing foods that are calorie dense.
I don't like to eat when I am on Adderall either but I force myself too. Foods like rice, beef, pastas, and nuts are all calorie dense. Add these kinds of foods to your to your diet. Trying snacking on a cup of peanuts during the day. You'd be suprised to know a cup of peanuts has 800 calories. Put one cup of those down a day and you're already doing better.
If you cannot keep your weight stable while on this drug, it is not the right drug for you. You are putting yourself at extreme risk for bone fractures, muscular dystrophy and a number of other ugly problems. Next time you go to the grocery store look on the back of the foods you buy and pick stuff up that has a ton of calories in it. If you can't cook, get some microwavable meals. Those are usually calorie dense.
Good luck
luvlife 03-27-09, 03:11 PM i'm having the same problem with adderall. just started 2 weeks ago,10mgx2, plus 20mg prozac. have to make myself eat. sometimes just the thought of putting food in my mouth makes me want to gag. yesterday, i was wondering why i could not focus and feeling run down and figured out that i hadn't eaten all day. my daughter brought me a quarter pounder and fries from mcdonalds and after i ate it i felt so much better. i wonder how extreme it's going to be when my dosage is increased next month.
Switch metabolisms with me. I've never heard of a petite girl having a fast metabolism! I'm only an inch taller than you, and I have the metabolism of a post-menopausal sloth. I will happily donate that to you, because I care about you so much. :D If I eat more than 1200 calories a day, I gain weight.
lightxosleeperx 03-28-09, 05:21 PM Ive been on adderall xr since September and I can tell you that I have lost 45 lbs but got to my goal weight and my doctors goal weight of 130-135 for my height.
To keep this weight and not lose anymore he told me to carry around little snack bags of my favorite treats and if something sounds good then go for it, because it's not like you are going to pig out because you never really get all that hungry.
It's helped me maintain my weight though. :-)
dgessler 03-28-09, 05:22 PM My advice is to consider taking the IR and completely stop XR. Sure, the XR is "smoother", but I love taking IR so I can eat before and after the dose. I'm not "locked in" for 7-8 hours without getting hungry at all. Just something to consider. (And for me personally, another reason I don't appreciate XR that much is whenever I do force myself to eat halfway during my XR dose, the second half of the beads are so much less effective. I would SO much rather not have food interfere with my adderall, AND to eat on regular time intervals.
Kaitlyn 03-28-09, 05:50 PM I think the adderall speeds up the metabolism, so it really doesnt matter what you eat. You will still lose weight.
KillZone 03-28-09, 09:59 PM I think the adderall speeds up the metabolism, so it really doesn't matter what you eat. You will still lose weight.
Nope.
Eating will be the same. Stimulants usually curb you're appetite. I for one am eating yogurt, protein bars, lots of cheese and lots of carbs. Take IR, because you will be able to eat later. I for one like IR more to, because it's much more intense, meaning more focus, talkativeness, lots of confidence and Euphoria. Also you should do some weight lifting.
One last advice is switch to IR and don't take it everyday, take breaks on days you know you can get through without it. This helps, because when you stop taking Adderall you eat more than normal.
BTW people are kind of brain washed with this subject so if you're ignorant please self educate you're self, but if you're in a state were you can get Medical Marijuana I would recommend it. You will be eating and gaining back you're healthy weight. Say good bye to anorexia.
tlhengel 03-29-09, 07:51 PM if you're in a state were you can get Medical Marijuana I would recommend it.
Are there any other besides California?
DarkCode 03-29-09, 10:17 PM Are there any other besides California?
There are 13 medical marijuana states.
Alaska, California, Colorado, Hawaii, Maine, Michigan, Montana, Nevada, New Mexico, Oregon, Rhode Island, Vermont, Washington (State).
That's great advice. "Just smoke weed. The munchies will take care of anorexia, and of course it won't cause any new problems."
Even in states where medical marijuana is legal, you need a legitimate reason for it, like you have cancer and you're on chemo. I doubt any doctor would prescribe it to offset Adderall side effects.
ozchris 03-29-09, 10:59 PM 40 mg is a hefty dose for some people. The higher the dose the more likely you'll get the appetite reduction.
If you keep going the way you are, it's not going to be pretty. You'll waste away. Not eating for over 24 hours is terribly unhealthy, I'm not certain but I believe you can even damage your brain by doing that.
Post #5 pretty much summed it up. Listen to this guy or you're going to be in much deeper trouble than you could imagine.
Sorry for being so negative but sometimes I need a good slap in the face to wake up and change something. You gotta ask yourself if this keeps being a problem for you - what's more important? my education or my health? Hopefully there's a happy medium where you can keep treating your ADD with adderall and still eat enough.

Having ADD/ADHD is considered a legitimate ailment to be 'recommended' medical marijuana.
To respond to your statement: they do, and they will.

I'm 27 and I've been taking Adderall for more than 10 years. I've been on Adderall XR for the last 7 years and have noticed the weight loss issue as well. Personally, I've found it to be a blessing. Try and eat a lot when your not on the medication, but even when you are you need to force yourself to eat anyway. You'll find that the appetite issue becomes less of a problem the longer you're on the medication. I can remember years ago when I literally didn't feel like eating anything ever, but now I just eat a normal amount of food.
KillZone 03-31-09, 09:51 PM That's great advice. "Just smoke weed. The munchies will take care of anorexia, and of course it won't cause any new problems."

No they will. One of the listed reasons is for anorexia.
But for anorexia caused by another medication? They might just tell you to switch from Adderall to something that doesn't kill your appetite.
My main point was that marijuana causes problems of its own. And it seems like it could interfere with the improvement in cognitive function that Adderall provides for ADD people.
Aald4x4 04-02-09, 09:54 PM Hey, I am a college student and have similar experiences to yours. I was 150lbs when I started Adderall XR, and went down to 128lbs or so very quickly. I just didn't want to eat, even small stuff like granola bars.
I got my doctor to prescribe me 20mg IR pills, and on days when I can manage, I try not to take anything in the mornings and eat a lot, then take the IR in the afternoon.
I actually found that I like this better, this way I can focus more when I NEED it. It might be hard for you to not take it every day, but just try it and see.
I drank two whey protein shakes a day from GNC that were around 2000 calories a piece. I was taking in 5000+ calories a day and still didn't gain any weight. So for some people (like you and me), the adderall might speed metabolism no matter how much you eat.
By doing this, I'm back to 136-139 pounds. I don't force myself to eat, but I do eat enough to be sure I'm full. Feel free to PM me if you have any questions!
Roger14 04-03-09, 04:08 AM Here's what you gotta do. Take one day out of the week to stock up on food. Be all about it. Make a list of things to buy at the store. Buy snack stuff and also stuff you can cook up. Then cook up a big portion of your favorite food and then keep it on hand for when ever you can eat it. Also buy stuff that is easy to prep like cereals and oatmeal and fruit for breakfast. Take as many snacks with you to school as possible. That's what I do, I take 5 classes.
My dr weighs me every 3 months. If I lose too much weight, he'll take me off the Adderall XR. Since it has worked so well, I don't want that to happen, so I just made myself eat, usually protein based foods.
I had to set reminders to go get food, or else I would just forget.
Kaitlyn 04-29-09, 02:39 PM I have been taking adderall for three days to lose weight. It has definitely worked, I feel full with small amounts of food. The problem is that my heartrate accelerates at times, which is annoying, and I get really thirsty.
if you are trying to lose weight I think phentermine would work better than adderall
mithrilstar 04-30-09, 09:57 AM OMG! I know I am weird. I know I am different than most people, but OMG! I just don't get it! I just don't understand how hard it could be to not lose weight, and to even gain weight, if you really wanted to.
<O:p</O:pOkay, I am 5'9", and 150lb. I am a 42 year old female. I have been on Adderall since last Sept. I take 60xr a day. I have currently lost a total of...ready? 8 whole lbs!!! Am I just really unusual here, or something? I mean, I have even been TRYING to lose weight. Yeah, for the first month or 2 I experienced some appetite suppresion, and that is mainly when I lost most of the 8 lbs. But now it's just like normal, with my appetite. Maybe it's just because of my sweet tooth/junk food cravings. I don't know.
<O:p</O:pBut anyway, here's what I would say to do:
<O:p</O:pGo to your local supermarket, and tell yourself you are going to allow yourself to have ANYTHING you want to eat, for one week, as a special treat. Think: BINGE!!! Yeah, binging on junk food isn't good to do long-term, but once in a while won't kill you, especially if you need to gain weight. Just make sure to go back to eating mostly really healthy food afterwards.
<O:p</O:pOkay, so you are at the supermarket. Ask yourself: what are your most favorite junk foods/special treats? Then go from aisle to aisle, picking them up. Here's an example of what I would get:
<O:p</O:pRing Dings, orange cupcakes, Enteman's chocolate-covered donuts, any kind of donuts, pringles potato chips, any kind of potato chips, brie cheese, spray-can easy cheese (best on ritz crackers or celery), double stuff oreos, mint chocolate-covered oreos, {from frozen section: carrot cake, (in those big tubs: creampuffs, choc. covered creampuffs, mini éclairs)}, velveta and shells, any macaroni and cheese, ready to bake toll house Ultimate chocolate-filled cookies, homemade chocolate chip cookies, homemade brownies, cake (either bought or made from box and tub of frosting), spaghetti, spaghetti-o’s, (all kinds of bread, esp.: french bread w/ butter, garlic bread, raisin bread, rye bread, bagels), pancakes w/syrup, ice cream sundaes, (candy: i.e.: chocolates, candy bars), baklava, pie, mashed potatoes, cashews, sugary cereal, i.e.: fruity pebbles, frosted flakes, etc.
<O:p</O:pAlso: (from a food joint/restaurant): french fries, chinese food, corn chowder, pizza, cheese sticks, mozz. sticks, etc.
<O:p</O:pOkay, this should be enough to give you a few ideas, hopefully. (Oh, yeah, as you can probably see, and have probably guessed from my list of favorite foods, I am a vegetarian. So, feel free to add any and all meat products that you want, if you are not. Think: bacon, big macs, etc.!)
Now, GO TO IT!!! Eat to your heart’s content (although try to at least balance it out with SOME healthy food each day, like at least a salad, fresh fruit, or some veggies). You won’t have to worry about getting enough protein, believe me. Unless you're actively working to increase your muscles though body building or some other such activity, 50 grams of protein a day is all you need. And even if you don’t get that much, it won’t kill you. Not for a LONG time, anyway, like years. But do go back to healthy eating after a few days, or a week at the most, although you can then continue to eat as much junk food as you like, as well, as long as you eat pretty healthy food most of the time. And I can GUARANTEE you, you will gain weight, as much as you could possibly want. I helped out my friend with this once, who as 5’0, and 90lbs. She never thought she’d possibly be able to gain weight, as she had tried all her life. And LOW AND BEHOLD, within 3 weeks, she had gained 5lbs! And another 10 by 2 months later. Then, she actually had to start cutting back on food! So, have fun! And good luck!

lilhotADDmama 04-30-09, 03:38 PM My main point was that marijuana causes problems of its own. And it seems like it could interfere with the improvement in cognitive function that Adderall provides for ADD people.
Their have been studies that have shown that medical marijuana can actually help ADD/ADHD- With this being said, they would most likely take said person off Adderall on only have them on marijuana. But I have also heard, people who take Adderall and use marijuana and they have good results, focused, organized, but none of the normal side effects of adderall.
To the OP- you just need to make yourself eat- whether your feel hungry or not- I am on IR and if I don't eat before I take it I won't eat all day and when it's wearing off I could just go to bed without eating. I am only 5"1 and around 105- it I drop below 100 my doc will take me off it. So I do whatever it takes to stay at 105. Even if this means drinking protein shakes, forcing myself to eat. In the AM eat breakfast before your first dose, and then eat a few small high protein/carb meals throughout the day.
lilhotADDmama 04-30-09, 04:08 PM Here are some links regarding the use of Marijuana for ADD. Remember that this isn't just smoked, it would be given in food or pill form

You stated you are 42? You might be going through peri menopaue or menopause. Our homones do mean things to us when reach that age. weight gain s one of them and a thicker waist is another. it's mother nature. not much we can do about it. At least you are not gaining!
I'm with you on that one, mithrilstar. I've actually gained weight since starting Adderall IR because it makes me edgy and irritable, which leads me to binge on sugary junk. Even on Dex IR, which doesn't cause any negative feelings, I binge eat when it wears off in the evenings. And I'm only 23, so I'm definitely not menopausal! I'm always trying to lose weight, but even amphetamines can't suppress my appetite enough. I read these posts complaining about losing too much weight and having no appetite on Adderall, and I'm like "I wish I had your problem." I'm very short, only 5'1", but I have the appetite of a 6-foot tall male athlete. Too bad my BMR is only 1200 calories a day.
I also have atypical depression, and comfort eating is a major symptom of that. Of course, I can't take SSRI's because they would cause even more weight gain! Anyway, threadjack.
mithrilstar 05-01-09, 07:51 AM Cool! That's interesting. And as to the possibility of menopause, not too likely for me, as my whole family (both sides), are all very late--mid-fifties for the START, at the earliest. Goes with our long-lives, I think (women all in 90's when they died), and also with looking really young for our ages (I still get carded buying wine for my husband!). But anyway, that's good to know I'm not the only one who doesn't lose weight on Adderall! Thanks!
lilhotADDmama 05-18-09, 01:20 PM Have you had your thyroid checked?

Having ADD/ADHD is considered a legitimate ailment to be 'recommended' medical marijuana.
To respond to your statement: they do, and they will.
I'm in Oregon and recently experienced the medical marijuana process first-hand. They specifically tell you right up front that no mental condition is considered a "valid" reason for a medical marijuana prescription. Your condition must be physical in nature.
Not sure about other states, however.
I don't get any appetite supression from adderall either, 40mg daily.... 23 year old male (not sure if that matters?). It's actually made me eat a bit more, I used to not be able to eat in the morning.
I wouldn't say I have increased cravings for sugar, which people mentioned earlier.
I'm good about saying hydrated too.
So, I think it just makes me hungry.
Interesting to know its not just me, learn a lot on here.
dissolved girl 06-11-09, 06:45 PM my appetite has significantly gone down as well.
i'm 5'2". i prob weighed about 102lbs when i started it and i'm down to 98lbs, which isn't that bad.
i'll have breakfast - usually cereal with a banana. i actually try to eat it quickly because if i go slowly it's like my body suddenly feels full faster and i begin to feel nauseous.
then i go throughout the day with eating a small snack at 4ish, IF i remember that is.
then i easily go without anything until dinner, and even then i eat a pretty small amount - one third to half of the meal. normally my mum will cook it for me, but if not then i might just have a small snack and completely forget to eat.
i know it seems logical to say "Just force yourself to eat", but i just can't. it partly has to do with just forgetting during my usual daily tasks but even when i am around food, its really really hard to eat much. i either look at it and feel no desire to eat, or eat a little and feel too full to eat more.
sometimes even when i feel too full (in reality i ate very little) i get nauseous just smelling the food. after dinner i have to wash my hands and brush my teeth really really well to make sure i can't smell the food afterwards, since it makes me feel ill.
when i feel NO hunger, or i feel nauseous, NOTHING looks appetizing. foods i'd previously like: friend tofu, rice, donuts, muffins, crackers, begals, pasta, chips, cake, cucumbers, french fries, on and on - don't look that good for me, nothing does. i try to eat a bit then i just can't have any more.
basically what i've been trying to do to avoid having it mess up my body:
-when i feel hunger, i make sure that the food i chose is very healthy AND the most densely packed with nutrients, protein, good fats, etc. (having a spoonful of peanut butter would be good, stuff like that)
-when i feel thirsty i try to quickly chug (if i drink it slowly then i'll get sick of it half way through) a glass of soy milk which is high in protein and some nutrients. adding some protein powder to it or a drink would be a good idea too.
-get protein bars. take one (or more) with you in your bag when you are out. even if you look at it and know you can't eat the whole thing, when you feel the slightest amount of hunger, open it, take a few bites, then wrap it back up in your bag, take a few bites later on, etc. i have nutribars and they are pretty good (270 cals, 13g protein, a high amount of a lot of nutrients, etc).
-take supplements. right now i take vitamin-b complex, magnesium, and vitamin d. i'm thinking of getting iron supplements and/or multivitamins.

I have noticed this too. My first day taking adderall I REALLY had no appetite. I usually eat dinner around 6:00, but I made it to 10:00pm when it suddenly dawned on me that I hadn't eaten anything that entire day, except a bowl of cereal that morning.
Yesterday I cooked spaghetti around normal dinner time (6:00), I can normally eat almost a whole plate of spaghetti and about two pieces of Texas toast:o, but the most I could eat was about 1/4 of a plate and one piece of toast.
The lack of appetite kinda makes me feel a little depressed, because I feel like I'm sick or something.

I know exactly how you feel as well... I'm constantly going whole days without a full meal or having only a lunch then realizing at bed time that I haven't eaten dinner.. lol. It just doesn't seem as important to me I suppose? I used to have a seriously bad habit of craving different flavours and types of food (over eating) so I can't really complain about this, but I do hope it doesn't have a bad effect on my health over all
