View Full Version : Concerta and memory
BehindTheSofa 04-04-09, 09:12 AM I'm on a trial of this at the moment, currently taking 30mg a day.
While it's improved my concentration I am finding that my short term memory (which was never great to begin with) is now quite bad, to the point that I will argue with someone that the didn't tell me something when they say they did.
It hasn't dulled my mind, it had blunted it. I am normally quick with my responses but now I'm scrambling about trying to find the right words to use.
Has anyone else had this experience?
I actually have had sort of the same effect... I can remember anything important now (like my school work) but when it comes to remembering when I talked to someone or what I talked to them about, I'm lost.

I also had the same issue when I started Concerta, but luckily, it subsided after a couple of days. I already have a short attention span when it comes to verbal deliveries over visual.
greyblanket 05-04-09, 12:12 PM I have just started with Concerta, having switched from dexamfetamine, but I have had the opposite effect. I was really struggling with my words and short term memory before, and since I started taking it my anxiety has just gone away, and I am not struggling to find my words or wandering around the house wondering why I went into a room.
I am still completely unfocussed but feeling so much happier. My handwriting has also improved, and I was wondering whether that was at all connected to the words thing. I started on 18mg, and am building up my dose to get to the correct level. So think it will take a week or so to work that out. I find it wears off after about 6 hours, but maybe this will change when I get the dose right.

hollywood 05-05-09, 09:40 AM ritalin , or concerta in adhd people usually improves our ability for eye hand coordination as the adhd untreated mind is somewhat lazy and unfocused which lessens our ability to maintain a steady hand when writing . Ritalin corrects that.
Contrast 05-20-09, 11:51 AM Hm i have quite bad short term memory loss i thought it was from smoking cannabis but i think im going to start looking into this.
tony2009 05-20-09, 02:49 PM After switching from Ritalin SR 20mg to Concerta 36mg I'd say my memory has gotten significantly worse, and hasn't improved, I'm thinking my dose is too high as I've been taking it for a month now and the side effects have not gone away.
hollywood 05-20-09, 03:18 PM my bet would be that your dose is actually too low. concerta releases .22 percent of the medication initially and then the osmotic system releases the rest of the med in 3 equal doses spread out through the day. Water consumption actually triggers the release for concerta and makes the pump release the medication on time. Many people have strange responses on concerta eventhough it is a novel medication because of this release system. It does a good job on delivering a smooth dose but many times it leaves the patient guessing just what is going on.
tony2009 05-20-09, 07:46 PM I was wondering what effect foods or water has on these meds, I drink water like a horse everyday, just like before I started taking them, I don't usually eat sugary junk foods either, and learned my lesson to not have caffeine with them.
The side effects I was talking about were, faster than the normally rapid heart rate I was used to getting from ritalin sr, sore joints, my kidneys felt sore in the morning, anxiety was increased compared to the calm the ritalin gave me, my eyes dryed out at the end of the day more than on the ritalin everyday, when I ate I'd overeat(probably the anxiety), I felt obsessive and restless to the point I'd look forward to not taking it on the weekend.
I tried some of the old ritalin sr I had yesterday, and the calm returned, no more anxiety, no sore joints and no kidney pain and I stopped being so obsessive and avoiding others.
I couldn't see my psychiatrist today so I went and saw my GP whom I asked to change my dose to 27mg for 10 days which is when I'll be seeing they psychiatrist.
I took a ritalin sr in the morning by the time I got my prescription I was starting to get the rebound effect really bad almost forgot what it felt like.
I took the concerta 27mg and so far I feel okay, no anxiety or obsessing happening yet, going to stick with it for at least a week and see where I am at. I wish my psychiatrist had originally started me on a low dose and titrated up.
Oh the reason why I figured less instead of more was because the ritalin sr is supposedly an unreliable medication and I thought it was probably never giving me all the methylphenidate in the pill. As I was taking one 20mg ritalin sr in the morning and one in the afternoon, before I started concerta 36mg.
Concerta, for most is definitely a lot smoother than the other slow release mechanisms. I didn't get any memory problems when I was on Concerta, but I know once it wore off I had quite a few problems. I know when I was on Concerta it was almost as though I was 'lost for words' in conversations, not cuz I couldn't articulate, but because I had no desire to say anything.
When you have problems on medications its usually cuz' the dose is too low, or too high. When I went up in dosage on Concerta from 18mg (+10mg Ritalin) to 36mg I did better.
tony2009 05-24-09, 12:55 PM Well I would have been back to post except the day I posted that I got food poisoning, and my stomach is still a little irritated. However yesterday and Friday I took the 27mg dose and I think it helped me better I got the benefits I wanted which are increased concentration and little to no side effects I previously complained about. And it feels a lot better to not be so anxious and for my short term memory to be working properly again.
So I'm going to see how it goes.
