View Full Version : Just switched from Vyvanse
bmxrider379 04-08-09, 01:17 PM So I went to the Dr. yesterday and he switched me from Vyvanse 50mg to Concerta 36mg today is the first day I've taken the concerta I took it at 9am and its noon now and so far I HATE it. I was switched from Vyvanse because I was building a tolerance to it and it was loosing its effectiveness. I've noticed that I have a pattern in tolerance building with medications when I used to abuse prescription drugs I used to take 4 xanax when 1 used to produce the same effect. I'm a 19 Year old 160lb male and I feel that the doses that have been prescribed to me are not adequate enough, I've seen where young children have higher doses than I do. I'm just a little frustrated as I'm in college and have exams in a few weeks and right now with the concerta I'm all over the place.
So my question does any one else have any experience with switching from vyvanse to concerta?
bmxrider379 04-08-09, 02:21 PM Update 1:30pm
After reading some other post on the forum I think I've come to a conclusion. My diagnosis is ADD, they break ADHD in to two categories AD Attention Deficit and Hyperactive Disorder I think the methylphenidate drugs work better for treating the hyperactivity whereas the amphetamine based drugs treat the attention ADD better. So far today the concerta it producing completely reverse effects than desired I'm very tired can't focus on anything and have periods of just blank staring. Its only the first day I've taken the concerta and I don't know if I need to give it time to build up or something but I feel like I'd be better off not taking anything over taking the concerta. Even typing this was a challenge.

Where did you get that info from?
bmxrider379 04-08-09, 04:51 PM My own opinion I may possibly be wrong but so far the concerta has hindered me more than helped I'd be better off not taking it where the Vyvanse significantly helped.
willzzz 04-09-09, 01:03 AM Interesting effects on Vyvanse vs Concerta. I'm on Concerta atm and the only thing it does is it makes me OCD on EVERYTHING with my interests.
tryingtocope 04-09-09, 01:19 AM I would suggest that you go back to Vvyanse until you get thru with your exams, then if your psychiatist will allow it, try to experiment with different medications while you are on a break.
The psychiatist that treats my husband and son (16) usually has patients try a mediation for several days at different dosages to try to determine what is the best medication and the correct dosage.
I'm sure it's very frustrating with exams looming soon. See if your doctor will work with you until you finish school by upping your Vyvanse dose or at least prescribe enough to get thru this next crunch.
Both my guys take two doses a day too. Do you? My son is on (two) 50 mg of Vyvanse a day, morning and afternoon.
Good luck.
bmxrider379 04-09-09, 11:15 AM Yes thats my plan waiting for the call anytime now. At times my Doc seems a little to conservative wants to keep me on a very low does I guess thats a good thing thought I think the 70mg would be good work for atleast 4 months. My problem is I have a history (if you'd call it that) of drug abuse I'm currently in a program called drug court because I was arrested on a felony weed charge. After a few months in the program and being clean my phyc suggested I try ADD meds and referred me to the phyc med doctor and its like night and day. I used to smoke weed heavily to calm my racing mind which wasn't the best self medication as I pretty much made my self retarded for 6mnths on the medication I have no urge to use illegal drugs and everyone around me is really proud for the first time and I want to keep it that way. I had abused other drugs before but I wan't the kind of person to just take your word for what it was and take it I would research it and learn what I could about it. When I used xanax I would calculate the half life and always know exactly how much I was on. Today I can't abuse drugs even if I wanted to as I'm randomly drug tested 2x a week which also makes it impossible to experiment with my doses to see what works because they'll think i'm trying to abuse it. All I want today is to have my ADD treated and be able to accomplish thing in life.
tryingtocope 04-09-09, 12:38 PM Hey, it's great that you can be so open and honest about your past. Hopefully, you are onto a much better future. You may have to be patient as you earn back everyone's trust. Just keep reaffirming to everyone that you are interested in treating your ADD and that's all.
For what it's worth, my husband would tell you that he "self-medicated" with pot when he was much younger too. He didn't know it at the time, but looking back, he can see the pieces of his ADD puzzle.
I'm not trying to justify your drug use, but just to let you know that you aren't alone.
Don't give up on the "legal" meds, they are a much better route to ADD treatment than the one you were on. Almost everyone on these forums seem to have had to experiment with different types of medication and dosage. Unfortunately, it is not an exact science right now.
Good luck.
bmxrider379 04-09-09, 04:07 PM So I just talked to the Dr and he wants me to try the med for another few days I really don't want to do that because it made me completely useless yesterday and I utterly hated the way it made me feel. Does any one have an experience of switching from vyvanse to concerta?

Its funny because I've been switch from concerta to vyvanse. I don't know, concerta doesn't help me at all.
demitriden 04-18-09, 04:32 PM if take high doses of amphetamines, then if mph is going to be effective it often gotta be at very low doses
demo3210 04-18-09, 07:34 PM I've switched from Concerta to Vyvanse and then back to Concerta cuz Vyvanse made me feel really weird and gave me a panic attack so I was done with it. But with Concerta my thoughts aren't as focused and direct as they are with Vyvanse, but Concerta gives me the ability to sit in a place and do my work for extended periods of time. If you're still feeling discombobulated on Concerta, maybe try some coffee if that usually helps you focus. Just don't overstim with the caffeine or you'll regret it.
Just as a sidenote, Methylphendiate (Concerta, Ritalin, etc) is generally considered 'safer' and less 'neurotoxic' in some scientific studies compared to amphetamines for the long term. So you might just wanna hang in there for a little bit longer to see if you can dig it. But if it doesn't work it doesn't work.

hey demo3210,
is that general knowledge or do you have some reference material? i would love a link or idea on where this statement comes form. i am in the process of switching from adderal XR to vyvanse or concerta and that seems to be pretty pertinent information.
