Each year we have to list our goals for the year which is how our evaluation is done. Our supervisor comes up with our goals for us. One of the goals each year is to keep absenteeism at 2% of total hours worked not including vacations and holidays.

Every year I miss this goal and it impacts my rate increase and the rating of my evaluation. I finally brought it to the attention of my supervisor this year that I did not think it was right since due to a disability of having TS, ADHD, and OCD, I have to go to the doctor once a quarter for botox treatments. Each visit takes up to 4 hours. This does not include follow up appointments are medicine changes if necessary.

2% of total hours worked each year (2080 hours ) is 41.60 hours. My visits to the doctor result in 2 days of being absent. Because I am having to go to the doctor as a result of a disability do you guys feel this is not reasonable on the part of my employeer and would it be considered discrimination? I did mention it to my supervisor and he said he would talk to the department manager.

Bunny,

I think that's a reasonable request, but I would make it in writing, and request a response in writing as well. Documentation is important in cases like this.

Well that is an idea. I did ask my supervisor about it today so I think I will give him a few days to see if he gets back with me. if not, I can send him an email reminder.
Thanks

Well, that's fine to wait, Bunny....but the only way you will have a legal leg to stand on, is if you have a trail of documentation that shows your request, and summarizes your discussions. This also sets a date of request in ink, and motivates a punctual response.

I agree with Big. Make sure you put it in writing and make a copy of what you sent for your own records.

That is what I did and I emailed my supervisor and I am very proud of the way I worded it. He actually said, I am glad you did that, you explained it much better than I could so I forwarded your email on.

Thanks guys

Received good news today. Medical appointments will not count against our 2% goal. And they are going to do it for all employees, not just me.

Thanks everyone

That's awesome. Sounds like you work for someone who is really concerned about listening to their employees! :)
