Plunging into the Atkins diet, as of tomorrow.

Tonight's my last hi-carb hoorah. I have a box of Swiss Cheese crackers and a 2L bottle of Barq's as my consolation/celebration of the passing of carbs from my lifestyle... :D

From here on in, it's salads, meats, cheeses, and specialty products from my wife's health store...

I'll keep track of all the data here for my own records and in case anyone else wants to observe how well it works or doesn't work.

Good luck! I'm not doing Atkins, but I find that I feel a lot better if I limit my simple carbs.

WWC...I'm on Atkins.

Here are some tips:

* During induction phase, avoid speciality "Atkins" and healthfood products (Stick to the basics). They tend to stall weight loss
* Make sure you're using the NEW Atkins book (Not the 1984 version)
* Avoid Diet Colas and foods with aspertame and sacharine during Induction Phase. (Splenda is ok, but use sparingly)

There is a low-carber support forum, and you can find some great low-carb recipies out there. Let me know if ya want the URL.

Good Luck!!

Thanks for the tips...

-Induction consists of Caesar salad (no croutons), broccoli, celery, meats, eggs, and the odd bit of cheese, according to my wife. Might find some other "natural" no-carb foods to add but no "lo-carb" substitutes at all.

-I work in a bookstore. I have access to all the latest books. :D

-I would never use ANYTHING with aspartame in it, regardless of being on or off Atkins. That stuff causes cancer.

But I appreciate the heads up from someone who has gone there before. I'll know who to ask if I have any questions!

I'm not an expert on losing lots of body fat, as I keep fit most of the time, but guys overall the Atkins diet has a 1% overall end healthy outcome result. You NEED carbohydrates. You dont only burm carbos for energy. Please understand this. This IS proven real science. Glucose is used by your cells for energy BUT there are other carbo's which are NOT used as fuel but are used for everything else that happenes in your body. eg glycosamine (which is a sugar and comes from carbo foods) do you need these sugars for your joints?? YES and you dont burn this carbo for fuel .

What is your immune system made of?? correct carbohydrate molecule structures on all cells. How, when you injure yourself, does your cells know where and what to heal?? right carbohydrate molecule structures on your cells. What is your DNA made of?? correct again, mostly carbohydrate molecules (ask any knowledgable doctor or scientist).

Where does our body's get these carbohydrate molecules from?? FOOD.
Guess what happens when you delete these carbo's from your diets, YOU WILL GET SICK EVENTUALLY.

Please please please go on a LOW GLAECEMIC DIET AND EXERCISE. This is the only diet that has and will ever reap HEALTHY rewards in the long run.
Ask any good REAL nutritionist or even a bodybuilder. Would a bodybuilder starve themselves most of the time of carbs, No. So you ask they drop there carbs to "cut" up right!! Yes for a short time but what happens to them in this "cutting up period".

the body freaks out.
Do this.

Get a real plan from a nutritionist (low glaecemic diet for your body type )
Get an exercise program (even walking of cycling for 20 min an day will help plenty)

Eat proper percentages of food groups set out over the specified 5-6 (yes more small) meals a day.

Dont junk snack, Eat a protein, low sugar bar instead.

Delete processed white sugar from your diet, full stop. Sugar spikes in your diet will increase insuling levels to the roof and PUSH fats into your fat store cell areas and is as BAD as eating fat.

AND lastly make it a lifetime thing, for you and your loved ones. Chemical imbalances from Processed white sugar creates the problems of ADD/ADHD etc.

Please reconsider the ATKINS.

This was a crashing failure, BTW. I couldn't POSSIBLY live without carbs. :(

Hi Robevilzedd,

You mentioned what happens when you eat sugar (insulin spike, etc.), and I think this is correct. But many people are very sensitive to other carbohydraytes as well as sugar. I get the same effect if I eat a bagle, a bowl of pasta, or bread. If I eat cereal or toast in the morning, it starts the vicious cycle. Fruit does not have the same effect (but fruit juice does).

And unless I am wrong, the Atkins diet does not advocate NO carbs. It just advocates LOW carbs. Most vegetables have carbohydrates (although not that many). So it is pretty hard to not get enough carbohydrates unless you are a distance runner or construction worker or something. But for most of us who spend our days sitting at a desk, we just don't need that many carbs. In fact, we don't need that much food in general!

One of the biggest problems with the Atkins diet is not restricing carbs, it is that people begin to eat the non-carb foods (bacon, cheese, etc.) in absolutely rediculously huge quantities. Low carb does not have to mean high fat!

It is actually possible to have a very healthy low-carb diet as a vegetarian. Tofu for example has plenty of protien and very low carbs.

Good luck and I'd be very interested in hearing if you think it helps or not. I did give it a try many years back and didn't feel well on it. I hear so much I wonder if I should give it another try......
