View Full Version : Muscle Twitches
I've been experiencing strange muscle twitches in my arms and legs, and I really don't want to give up Wellbutrin... It has helped tremendously with my depression. It hasn't really helped with my ADD though, still experiencing lack of motivation, concentration, attention, working memory. I have energy now but not enough to force myself to concentrate.
I made a todo list but it ended up getting 2 pages long over the course of a couple days and I didn't get much of anything done on it.
sekaijuu 05-11-09, 05:33 PM I'm glad, in a way, that I'm not alone with this. I'm on my second round of Wellbutrin (works great for quitting smoking), but my psych nurse said it's supposed to help with attention too. Whatever.
Anyway, I'm having the same side effects this time, just like I did last time. If I concentrate on what to say, or if I speak fast, my face twitches. If I concentrate my hands or feet on something, they twitch too.
hollywood 05-12-09, 11:33 AM all meds have sides, usually this will go away, if not ask your doctor if their is anything that will combat this side effect like a beta blocker if your results are good with the depression or helping your adhd and motivation

If this second time on it is anything like the first time, these side effects will not go away unless I completely discontinue the drug.
Obviously, I'm giving Wellbutrin another chance, but eventually I will go off it if these side effects continue or worsen. I think it's a mostly harmless side effect, but it's very, very annoying.
hollywood 05-12-09, 02:42 PM I get it too bro, but I stick with the med because I don't feel fatigued like I would if I just took my stims. It is quite annoying but the fact that I'm more proactive and get more done on wellbutrin is just a fact. All the other antid's just make me lazy!
bomborwhack 05-12-09, 07:57 PM I have this issue too. Mostly only at night though? It's the worst when I'm actually drifting off into sleep...anyone else?
hollywood 05-12-09, 10:58 PM yeah I get it more at night too, like around 8pm or so. I think it has something to do with it leaving your system?? Wellbutrin helps though, thats for sure. In the broad scheme of things treating a spectrum disorder that is based on impulsivity and low dopamine levels in the brain that leads to mental fogginess and hyperactivity stimulating antidepressants are usually effective against anxiety which is often the result of mental drift.
Both me and my dad have this twitch- unmedicated! It gets worse before falling asleep. I get it more under one eye, worse if stressed, and I blink insanely rapidly. I can also get it in my hands. We both have really jerky movements when we sleep. And we both can imitate Kramer in Seinfeld really well:-))
So my Dad started on Wellbutrin. His twitching got worse. I started on Strattera, and did not get worse, but not better either. This week I added a low dose Propranolol. Voila!! Twitch disappeared for the first time I can remember!! My sleep is better too. I take 5 mg before sleep. I definitely recommend trying this!
hollywood 05-13-09, 11:21 AM can you take propranol with wellbutrin and my stim? What is the difference between propranol and guafancine and are they both indicated for this ? Wellbutrin + concerta helps tremendously, if I can get rid of this twitch , I'll be awesome
Iīd think so. 5 mg is a very low dose, too low to affect bloodpressure, usually 10-20 mg is recommended for migraine. I did notice cold hands and feet though, but this got better after a couple of days.
I take it with Strattera and also tried it with Ritalin 2.5 mg, no problems.
Of course I canīt promise that this will also work for you, but I think itīs a pretty safe thing to try. It makes sense too. More noradrenaline in the system does not only affect alpha adrenerg receptors, but also beta adrenerg receptors (hence beta blocker). So maybe the twitching comes from overstimulated beta receptors??
Propranolol mainly works on beta receptors. It has some small effect on serotonin HT1a receptors and possibly noradrenaline reuptake, I found this on Wikipedia.
Guanfacine is an alpha 2 adrenerg agonist. It will decrease outflow of noradrenaline and sympathetic outflow. Thus it will indirectly inhibit both alpha and beta adrenerg receptors, there is less noradrenaline to work on them.

cybalta + wellbutrin ( along with my stims ) as it seemed the cymbalta seemed to keep the twitching out or make them nonexistant.... I was just wondering what the best combo would be
The twitchng and jerking, especially later in the day or before you fall asleep, is a form of restless leg disorder. A sub-category of that is periodic limb movement disorder. My experience of that felt like a random series of limb twitches then a short-lived full body random twitching and jerking while awake - like a full body vibration. Anyhow, any SSRI and SNRI (Wellbutrin) can be triggers in susceptible people (they can help relieve RLS in other people though). SNRI's give a double punch because of the seritonin and norephredrine mixture. A lot of psychiatrists and most family doctors aren't aware of this side effect.
geogator 07-20-09, 06:36 PM I've been on Wellbutrin since last year for depression & never really had any side effects from it until my ADHD diagnosis in Feb. when my psych changed me to the brand name (vs. generic that I had been taking) & doubled me from 150mg to 300mg/day. Ever since, I'll periodically get a small case of the shakes in my hands/arms around mid to late afternoon but it goes away after an hour or so. It doesn't happen every day, just off/on. I started on Strattera at my Dx but had to switch to Concerta (54mg) after about 6 weeks. I was initially concerned the shakes were from those meds but he says it's the Wellbutrin & it's a fairly common side effect. According to him, there's really nothing I can do about it either - just deal with it or else go off altogether & try a different med, which I really don't want to do since it seems to help with the depression, especially since switching to the brand name. (I could rant on that topic too, but I'll spare y'all.)
Anyone else have these shakes in the hands while on Wellbutrin?
hollywood 07-21-09, 02:29 PM nah, but it does make me twitchy after I workout and make my chest really tight after training and there's not a whole lot you can do about it . It sucks because welllbutrin works well.
