View Full Version : Vyvance to Wellbutrin, feel really bad!
Switched from Vyvance to Wellbutrin... liked vyv, but did have a little crash effect at end of day, so 2nd day on Wellb. and OMG I feel really bad... can't focus, very down, very depressed....
Does this take a while to work? Thinking of stopping it, don't think I can put myself or my family thru this...
ADHD Hunter 05-06-09, 11:46 AM Wellbutrin does take time - up to a few weeks - to work.
My wife has tried it about three times and it does not work for her. It brings out an extremely angry side to her that you would not normally see. Last attempt, I was away on business travel when she made the switch - it was a nightmare. She tore up the house and it took close to a week to nurse her back to a more normal state.
I know it works for many people, but our experience has always been the same and not so good.
Make sure you stay in touch with your family and your doctor. When things are going badly, please remember it is the medication that is causing the feelings you are experiencing and not you/your situation.
Be well.

hollywood 05-06-09, 12:41 PM I wouldn't recommend wellbutrin as a standalone , usually it can help prolong your stimulants to last longer and give you more coverage but other than than it may help with motivation with stims , but I wouldn't think it's efficacy would be great as a standalone.
kattsqueen 05-06-09, 01:43 PM wellubutrin is kind of a second line treatment for adhd....
I think you would probably better of working with dosages on the vyance rather than changing to wellbutrin unless your doctor feels it is medically necessary to be on a non-stimulant type medication

RecruitDir 05-06-09, 10:12 PM EZ,
Contrary to what you may have read, WB is (and there are proven studies to back it) a standalone option for ADHD. The difference is the expecation, Adderall and the like produce an immediate effect (dopamine and noradrelene are prevented from being reuptaken), Wellbutrin does the same thing but, although a stimulant like Adderall (it's actually derived from Amphetimine and can subsitute directly for Amphetimne and Cocaine in rats and primates - they can not descriminate between them), it has a unique building feature (which can be a pro or con), meaning it can take up to 4 weeks to get the benefit you are getting immediately from Adderall. In your case this is a con. However, Wellbutrin lasts much much longer in your system, providing benefit, than Amphetimine and requires less dosing. In fact the XL version (reccomend 300mgs minimal), will provide you with 24 hour coverage. Because of the longer onset, theroetically, Wellbutrin is less abusable. Therefore, I'd reccomend weighing out the pros and cons of both and discussing with your Dr. Why did s/he reccomend the change. In reality both meds are subject to abuse, and with Wellbutrin at higher dosages, euphoria. You might also consider raising your dose to 450mgs if using WB soley, as this is the most benfecial dosage for ADHD if used standalone.
RecruitDir 05-06-09, 10:22 PM EZ,
You could also discuss the option of using both with your Dr., if not too stimulating, Vyv and WB are used together, and the WB will prolong the Vyv effect while cushioning the crash. Some Dr.'s shy from this though as both drugs act on the CNS, and can raise bloodpressure. Sometimes with the WB late at night I can feel my heart race and my ears turn red (blood pressure rising, likely due to the neuroadrelene). But, at least I know I am getting ADHD med coverage at that time.
hollywood 05-06-09, 10:35 PM recruit , you take adderall with wb right? How much adderall or mg's do you take?
RecruitDir 05-07-09, 02:10 PM Hollywood,
I am perscibed 60mgs, but strive for 50mgs.
I take 20mgs Addy IR @7:00AM
'' 30mgs Addy XR @11:00AM
Then I take WB 300mgs XL @3:00PM
By the time I take the WB there is no interfearence with the Adderall effect, and enough of it floating around for WB to get a boost as well. Honestly, I've worked this out to a science. I get 24 hour coverage with maximums from both meds. I feel energetic and not often depressed. Before the WB I was crashing hard and I'd crash with an IR chaser, for extra coverage - just before bed. WB seems to adept at smooothing things out. I tried Straterra w/Addy and my blood pressure hit the roof and I felt awful. Out of all the meds I tried to ease my ADHD and Learning Disabilities - this is the only combo that worked. Hey but everyone is unique, so concerta WB or another combo may be best for you.
Best,

penguin 05-08-09, 01:11 AM Hi,
I take generic Wellb with Vyvanse. Doc encouraged it to take the edge off at the end of the day. I take 30 mg Vyvan 4 - 5 days a week and Wellb 7 days a week. 300 mg wellb until my memory fades and I stutter, then cut back ~ to about 150 mg a day. 300 mg on vacations.
Doesn't sound like it would work, but it does. Guess that is why he is the doctor.
As Hollywood said, it can help the effectiveness of stims. There is no problem with mixing them at the lower levels. Not all, but roughly 10% may have memory issues.
I had sleep issues with Wellb for the first 2 months. No problems now.
Enjoy, Ken
hollywood 05-08-09, 08:54 AM Wellbutrin is pretty good, you just have to time it right. I usually take the xl around 2:30pm , just as recruit says at that point it doesnt interfere with my stim, it just helps with inhibit reuptake and keeps more dopamine around.
Thank you everyone. I really was trying to avoid taking a variety of meds, I'm in a job that my schedule is pretty crazy. However the affects you all are referring to certainly sound good. It's been 5 days now and don't feel as bad as the first. I'm taking the generic version of Wellbutrin, what's the XL version do?
Thank you all.
