I called my P-Doc on Monday. He didn't call back. I called again on Wednesday. He called back on Friday. He said he doesn't have much availability. He said he might have a cancelation on Tuesday, but he won't know for sure until Monday afternoon. He didn't mention anything about the next available appointment after Tuesday.

I know that P-Docs are running a business, but I am going to run out of medication (Adderall) on Wednesday.

My situation feels problematic because: 1) P-Docs have always looked at me with a raised eyebrow about Adderall because it is a controlled substance; 2) With tolerance, your effective level is always increasing, yet asking for more than your current dose is viewed as "requesting extra so they can sell it on the street!"

I suppose I should just schedule a regular appointment and make sure its well before I would run out of medication (even "in worst case scenario"), but it just seems like my P-doc shoudl be a little more readily accessible.

When I found this P-Doc however, he had the soonest availability of all the people I was able to reach.

So I don't think my P-Doc is Satan nor a saint...but I can't even imagine asking him about a new cognitive behavioral therapy technique that I read about being done in adjunct with a specific medication for anxiety, when I can barely even get a refill for the halfway decent medication regimen that I am currently on.

what are other people's experiences with P-doc availability, and does anyone have any "tricks" to getting more attention/care?

Did you let him know you needed your script? He might just write it for you and leave it for you. I'd have asked him what the next available appt was. I've learned to not expect anyone to mention what seems obvious to me, and when they don't, I need to ask.

I always make my next appointment before leaving the office. We're on an appointment schedule that's one week before I need a refill. There's just too many variables involved if I don't.

I don't think it's good that you didn't get a call back in a timelier manner. Couldn't his office staff made an appointment for you? (maybe he doesn't have office staff?) I don't know, I'd definitely start making the appointment before you left the office.
