View Full Version : Adderall and Weight Loss
orangesky 05-12-09, 05:47 PM I have recently started taking Adderall. It has helped with concentration, but the most noticeable result is the ability to diet and loose weight. I no longer bing and it has decreased my appetite. I have lost about 20 pounds in 3 months. My question is: How long do the weight loss side effects last? Being over 100 pounds overweight, this seems like a miracle drug. Do these side affects last? What have the rest of you experienced?

I'm on day four of Adderall and I've noticed the same thing. I started at 237 lbs and now am down to 233 and dropping rapidly. I've noticed that I have no desire to sooth myself with food anymore, no more binge eating. For the first time in 28 years, my relationship with food finally feels normal.
My therapist told me that by far, weight loss is the number one reported side effect of Adderall. A quick Google search turned up several people who have lost anywhere from 10 to 100 lbs on Adderall. The effect is permanent for most *while* taking the drug. Some people gain the weight back after stopping, some don't.
It has helped me curb my eating. I used to eat (A LOT) out of boredom before...now eating is like a chore when I'm on my meds - often times, the smell of food is repulsing or nauseating to me. But when my Adderall IR wears off, sometimes it's like I want to eat the fridge and everything in it.
giggity 06-06-09, 06:20 PM When I first started taking adderall, I was the same way. I had absolutely no appetite. That eventually wore off and went back to normal.
Wintermute 06-07-09, 06:00 AM After 3 weeks (plus a month and a half on Ritalin) I've lost about 10 pounds, maybe a little more. Thankfully, it's been weight I needed to lose, and the only meal I ever really skip is lunch. Sometimes my other meals are small, but not non-existent. I hope that when/if my appetite goes back to normal my stomach will have shrank a bit and I'll have gotten in the habit of avoiding nasty deli food at work everyday.
I notice though that I think I'm losing a bit of muscle mass as well. I like being more thin, but I'd like to stay toned, so I'm going to (try to) start doing some weight training stuff. Mostly sit-ups and push ups, nothing too crazy. I just don't want to look totally skeletal once the last bit of my torso flab is gone.
Wintermute 06-07-09, 06:04 AM Oh yeah, and I don't seem to just be losing weight from not having an appetite. I have been more active. Cleaning, working harder at work, walking the dogs more often and farther, etc.
I guess amphetamines raise your metabolism, so you burn more calories just sitting or standing there than you would normally. That's why some of us get so warm sometimes from barely doing anything. I know I do anyway.

Agreed. Adderall turns me into the energizer bunny, I get a ton of stuff done! That combined with a higher resting metabolism, combined with a tiny appetite, has an incredible weight loss effect for me.
I'm the odd man out. Adderall makes me hungry.
I used to never eat breakfast, now I do.
It's actually been good for me in that respect, more regular meals... plus I can actually plan for meals. Before I would put off getting food and stuff for so long that I'd just give up and not eat.
When I started on Adderall, I did lose weight. Currently at 25mg (dropped down after bumping up to 30mg). Dropped about 5 lbs almost immediately after starting. But that has gone the opposite direction. Now, I am constantly hungry. Especially when I take Adderall holidays. My weight has stayed relatively steady due to increased activity, but I worry that I may gain weight.
