My 11 yo is on 10 mg of Adderall, takes it 8am every morning.

This morning I gave him a 100mg of Magnesium Glycinate an hour after the Adderall and it was as if he'd had no Adderall at all today. It was a hard day...motor mouth, non-compliant, difficult behaviour.

He's been taking the Mag. Glycinate for about 4 weeks but always in the evening and today I decided to add another dose in the am. instead of adding more to the pm dose, to be consistent and because he hasn't reached max. bowel tolerance yet (I learned about this from a doc....titrate up gradually am and pm but if you get diarhea, its too much, your body is getting rid of the excess magnesium). Anyway....

I know that acidic foods should be avoided and I've suddenly realized that having ketchup with eggs is probably a bad idea, which could explain why Adderall seems less effective on other days. Today he had waffles with maple syrup, which I think might also be acidic (maple syrup.)

So is the mag. glycinate in the am negating the Adderall? I did a search in this forum but did not find a clear answer.

Magnesium would only potentiate, or lengthen/strengthen the adderall. Acidic foods definitely dampen adderall. Cut acids, if you want, give antacids, such as magnesium actually, and that should make the adderall better. actually i recently read on a forum that zantac makes adderall work so much better all day long. one dose in the am and your set alll day. this also goes for prilosec (omezprazole) and tagamet

however, i dont know long term effects of zantac or prilosec, do you? like they are definitely the best in making the meds effective and fully reaching their potential, but i diont know if its worth a potential health risk of antacids everhyday. if anyone knows about long term zantac, prilosec, or tagamet use, please post, as this would answer the OP and everyone else who has trouble with food and body ph affecting meds.

Thanks for the reply Yellow. I don't believe antacids are a good idea however. The same child had a terrible reaction to meds following a single antacid tablet--taken after a dose of biphentin (methylphenidate), when he said it gave him a stomach ache. He had twitchy muscles in his legs for 6 weeks following that...no kidding. Its documented. I believe it had the same effect as an overdose.

My own personal experience: I've taken both magnesium gycinate and tums before taking my Adderall. Both times it felt as though I hadn't taken any Adderall at all. I don't know why this is. I keep reading about how it's supposed to potentiate the medication, but it just cancels mine out. ??? I'm realizing that science doesn't always have a clear explanation for things. All of our bodies are different and what works for one doesn't always mean it will work for another.

I take prevacid every morning about 20 min before my Adderall, but I've never tried the Adderall without the Prevacid so I really have no baseline to compare it to (my acid reflux is TERRIBLE without Prevacid so i don't dare try) So far my Adderall works well with the Prevacid, so I dont' know why the problems with tums and mag.

I would not give him the mag in the morning. Do it only at night. That should take care of the problem

I realize this is an old thread, but it may be worth noting that some magnesium glycinate supplements also contain citric acid (which lessens the effect of amphetamines). I just got magnesium recently and though it definitely does help adderall stay much more smoother and overall I feel better, I don't take it at the same time I take adderall. I take adderall, let it kick in, then take magnesium with a meal. Then I take magensium with dinner as well.

Anyhow, maybe you guys should look at the ingredients to see if this could be the culprit.

I used to take Magnesium Citrate, found at the Vitamin Shoppe, the night before I would take my Adderall, along with a mutivitamin, which contains B complex.

Magnesium Citrate allowed more apsorbtion of the Adderall in my system, which made it effective for longer periods of time. It's also good for strong bones and teeth.

I also drank a protien shake along with 2000mg of high quality fish oil a half an hour after I took my Adderall in the morning.

I don't recommend taking the multivitamin in the morning though. Multivitamins contain Vitamin C which will lessen the effects of Adderall.

Vyvanse, which I take now, I use the same regiment except, I can take my multivitamin in the morning without the Vitamin C lessening the effectiveness. I don't take Magnesium Citrate anymore because of the Vyvanse.

Remember eat a lot of protien over carbs during the day, and don't drink anything which contains Citric Acid or caffiene. I only drink water during the day. I will have a coffee or soda around 7PM to help extend the effects of the medicine until I go to bed.

It always good to get 7 - 8 hours of quality sleep everyday. These suggestions have made both Adderall and Vyvanse very effective for me.
