Has anyone else here done competitive sports while on Adderal XR or Adderal? I play soccer and do some wrestling and both require some seriously high output cardiovascular work. I'm a tad nervous about being on medication while exerting to that level. My doctor says its not a worry. I'm wondering if anyone has any experiences with this. Thanks.

There have been a few (very few) cases where people taking adderall (in several cases, abusing it) were doing intense exercise, usually sports, and then dying because of heat stroke, or heart failure. So, if you have any issues with your heart, it's definitely not advised. Maybe if you can afford it, get some sort of heart check up (EKG?) and make sure your ticker can take it.

Also, remember to go lightly and let your body adapt. DRINK LOTS OF WATER. Stay hydrated and stay cool, even if that means sitting out before the other players, especially in the summer months. Drinking gatorade and water can be a good way to stay hydrated and keep electrolytes up. I personally can't drink gatorade by itself, makes me thirstier!

I don't actually have experience with exercising with my adderall yet (I just started), but I've been doing a lot of research. Hopefully some of that is helpful.

The benefits of exercise probably outweigh the risks of cardiac arrest.

Statistics indicate that the number of cardiac deaths among those who take ADD drugs is no higher than among the general population.

I got this information from the following article link about ADHD stimulants and cardiac screening. If you want more information about the risks, check it out.

I'm on Vyvanse, not Adderall, but I exercise like crazy and it doesn't bother me.

When I first started taking it, I felt kind of weak and tired during my normal workouts -- turned out I was not eating enough. My appetite did come back eventually, but at first I had to make sure I was forcing myself to eat enough calories.

At first I went a little easy to see how I felt - - my heart rate would go a little higher than unmedicated, but I didn't feel dizzy, nauseous, or short of breath so it seemed OK. My doctor also said it was fine.

I mountain bike for 2-3 hours at a time; I also trail run and lift weights and was able to continue w/out problems. Just make sure you drink plenty of water as the meds tend to dehydrate you a bit.

I have occasional heart palpitations so I have also worried how these stimulants will react with that.

I don't have an answer for you, but I do have similar concerns. My doctor put me on 40 mg IR a day (20 in the am, 20 after lunch) and he said it is okay to exercise (I run 35 miles a week and play soccer)... However, I do feel like my heart rate is up pretty high, and that does worry me. I think I have gotten palpitations on a few occasions after a run, but I am also not sure if I'm just paranoid...

Lack of liquids will produce the same problems as well as several other things. They may have been there before but were unnoticed. Trust, but verify: relax, but ask your doctor about them and what to look for as warnings and to do about them.

I occasionally go 85-90% of my MHR. Also, when I'm really keeping it down, I can do a recovery workout (~60-70% MHR) no problem.

One of my issues is that when I do go high HR, I tend to over do it. That screws up my next few workouts as I recover.

Other than that, no problems.

Ever since I started taking Adderall my heart beat has been very high... I noticed when I was working out that it would EASILY get to 180 bpm, this is after like two minutes of running! My heart beat went up to 200 twice now while exercising. I also had two 'attacks' of an elevated heart beat (160 and 170) while resting ... my doctor finally said that we have to do some testing (I had complained before and he said it was probably an anxiety attack..), so I'm now going on a Holter monitor for 24 hours after 4 days of not taking the pills, and then going on it again after 4 days on the pill to see what kind of changes I'm experiencing..

Yea I'm not sure why you had to hear this whole story :P But anyway, I recommend that you should try working out and see what kind of an effect it has on your heart beat. If it is excessively high, then go back to see your doctor and ask them for some advice!
