View Full Version : Adderall + Contacts
I get severe dry eyes whenever I'm on adderall. My eye doc gave me drops that are specially made for people wearing contacts who have dry eyes. I've used them religiously while taking adderall but the dryness always wins the fight. I basically cannot wear contacts while taking adderall. My vision gets all blurry and I have to blink 60 times per minute just to keep them a little bit lubricated. It feels like the contacts are glued to my eyes.
Has anyone suffered the same problem and figured out a solution?
I was just about to get contacts again. I am not on adderall but the way things are going, I might be in a week or two.
Have you tried drinking more water? Like a LOT of water and avoiding caffeine?
γ-quantum 05-21-09, 06:19 AM i have severely dry eyes without even wearing contacts, and i found that hylo-comod (sorry for the advert) is really the best when it comes to eye drops. if you've already tried a few different kinds and it doesnt help you enough, i heard that there are special, very thin (and more expensive) contact lenses for people with severe dry eye syndrome... have you tried these?

No, I've never tried the thinner contacts. But thanks for the hylo-comod suggestion. Going to try that out.
craig0ry 05-22-09, 03:11 AM Could it be that you aren't blinking as much? I'm really curious about this side effect as I read about it online a lot, but I don't know anyone who has experienced it.
chartreuse 05-22-09, 01:25 PM How long have you been on Adderall?
I had this effect a little bit at the beginning, but it went away pretty quickly. However, I am on a relatively low dose (7.5 mg 4 x a day).

I've been on adderall for about 20 months now. I take it roughly 4 days a week and my dosage is usually 40mg per day (I take a little less or more depending on how it's affecting me).
Do you mind if I ask how quickly your dryness went away? Do you wear your contacts all day? Thanks!

Yes, I definitely blink a bit less while on adderall. I think it's just due to the increased ability to concentrate on whatever I'm reading/doing. But I've made a conscious effort to start blinking more.
Also, I bought eye drops (Opti-free is the brand) that are specifically made for people who have dry eyes while wearing contacts. They definitely help but the only problem is that I have to put them in my eye like every 30 minutes on bad days.
One way I've dealt with this side effect of the adderall is to just wear contacts as little as possible. Basically, I wear them when I'm out and the MINUTE I get home I take them out.
hillbilly88 09-27-09, 06:34 AM I've always had the dry eyes and the feeling that the contacts are glued to my eyes. Drinking a lot of water and avoiding caffeine and alcohol like poster #2 said always helps me out. I also use the 'Visine for Contacts,' and sometimes even use just the regular 'Visine' or any over-the-counter eyedrops.
I have gotten use to it, but you may be experiencing something worse than me. It has not become too much of a problem unless I've had alcohol. Maybe switching brands or style of contacts would help. I order mine online at a website that let's me pick and choose any brand I want to try.
mensa99 09-27-09, 06:58 AM I too take Adderall (XR) and Dexedrine and have off and on for years now. Boy, do my contacts get to the point to where I just don't want to wear them because they are glued to my eyes as well. I drink plenty of fluids (water mostly) and just drink coffee in the AM. I notice the horrible effect the most during the latter part of the day when the medications are wearing off. Esp. when taking Dexedrine because I take Adderall (XR) in the AM and D-Amphetamine spansules in the afternoon and evening. Dex seems to affect the trying more so than Adderall but my post is valid because Adderall whether IR or XR is 75 percent formulated with d-amphetamine. I just end up taking the contacts out. One trick I use is that I make my eyes water by sadly having to brush my teeth where I always almost throw up (always have when brushing) and that makes my eyes water immensely! Odd scenerio but it does work. But once they hit the "really glued" stage - forget it. Nothing works except oxygen back to the eyes once the lens are removed. I must say I am also perplexed because I have an astigmitism as well and think it must contribute to the dryness due to the curvature of my cornea. Best Wishes...Mensa99
mensa99 09-27-09, 07:02 AM Gwerks - feel free to PM me if you ever want to discuss ADHD, Adderall, D-Amphetamine, etc. I am very interested in the sciences and people.
