View Full Version : Undiagnosed and cant sleep!!

All my life I've been unable to sleep properly - it's only recently I have come to realise it's due to undiagnosed ADHD.
I asked my doctor about 5 weeks ago to refer me to an ADHD specialist and when I spoke to him yesterday he said he's heard nothing from them.
I feel exhausted and am constantly run down.
I struggle to get more than 2-3 hours sleep every night. When I lie down to sleep it's like there's a dance hall in the room next to me with the muffled noise of music coming through the walls.

It's ruining me and they wont give me a diagnosis!
I've read stories on here of people sleeping better with dexadrine or adderall. I'm certain that those meds would help me (I've used street amphetamine in the past and it calms me down) yet they wont give me a diagnosis?
If they dont help me soon I feel like I may collapse from exhaustion.
I'm 42 and my life has been effectively ruined thanks to the U.K's system of sweeping ADHD under the carpet. :(

Hi Sassy,

UK NHS is a mess for ADHD but do keep persisting. The site www.aadd.org.uk (http://www.aadd.ork.uk) has a lot on it about getting through the system. But if you can afford 1k then try private, much quicker and less traumatic.

In the meanwhile there are several supplements you could try that might help. You could try serotonin/dopamine pre-cursors (the chemical building blocks the body uses to build these chemicals), such as 5-HTP, tryptophan, L-Tyrosine, DMAE etc. Only take one but each works differently for each person, so try one give it a week and then another if it does not work.

I would certainly start taking a good multi-mineral/multi-vitamin, plus strong Vitamin C & B, omega-oils and I would start with 5-htp one hour before bed time (which you can get at most health-food stores). You might also try herbals like Valarian or even Kalms which is pretty good. I'm not a doctor - so do check these out and do you own research first.

I hope your GP sorts out an appoitnment for you soon.

Hi in the moment......could you let me know what the pre-cursors are and how do we purchase them?Over the counter at a chemist?
I,m waiting to get diagnosed and having alot of trouble.......and think there is more to come. It's like talking to a wall with the so called specialists.

You should do what you can to get a sleep study. You could have a serious sleep disorder (as well as ADHD).

I suffered with Sleep Apnea at least since I was a teenager, but I never realized it. The difference in quality of life after I got treatment was just beyond imagining.

Good luck.

Sorry sassylassy was too keen on finding out about the precursors:o
I'm in exactly the same situation as you.....it feels like enoughs enough now. There is a gentleman on this forum who as advised me to get in contact with PAL maybe this could be of some help to you as well.
My sleeping is all over the place so are my moods and focus. The doctors and a psychiatrist are just shockingly arrogantly rude and ignorant with me at the moment but hopefully with persistence and help from this forum we will be able to sort this out eventually.
Are you in England? If so there is a thread with a petition to sign!It may be of some use because the more of us on it the louder the voice;)
Good luck(i know exactly what your going through)

Hi sorry missed your posts.

For sleep and mood I would first try 5-HTP (5-Hydroxytryptophan) 30 mins before sleep. Its a naturally occurring amino acid, precursor to serotonin and intermediate in tryptophan metabolism. It is found in cheese and poultry and produced from Griffonia seeds. 5-HTP is thought to causes the brain's serotonin-producing neurons to increase production which leads to increased serotonin release and generally improved mood and better sleep.

For focus and motivation in the day I would try L-Tyrosine in the morning (preferably N-Actyl Tyrosine, better absorbed, from Jarrow if you can find it). Tyrosine (4-hydroxyphenylalanine) is a precursor to neurotransmitters and increases plasma neurotransmitter levels particularly dopamine and norepinephrine. Studies have found tyrosine to be useful during conditions of stress, cold, fatigue, prolonged work and sleep deprivation, with reductions in stress hormone levels, improvements in cognitive and physical performance.

Both available in good health food stores/chemists. I think Holland & Barrett has them too. Hope they help. Not a doctor blah blah. Do check up on them first.
