View Full Version : Adderall Overdose
diagnosedincol 04-24-04, 02:59 PM Hello.
I thankfully have found your support site and was wondering if anyone could provide me with some information.
What is a dangerous level for Adderall XR? Is there an amount that you could take that would cause serious medical problems?
Has anyone had experience with taking more than the recommended amount prescribed?
I am desperately looking for some help/advice, so any that you can provide would be so appreciated.
Thanks,
Shana
I'm sorry I don't have any ideas about what toxic levels might be dangerous with Adderall XR.
Any pharmacist should be able to help you there if someone can't help you here.
"Gregster" on the forums here is a wealth of information along these lines.
The prescribing doctor should be able to help as well.
Post back if I'm completely missing the boat here.. please.
Cheers! Ian.
I am worried by your post, diagnosedincol, because there isn't a lot of other information for us to know you and any challenges you might be facing. Please consult a health care professional. Take care and come back to tell us how you are doing.
Adderall, like all amphetamines, has a high potential for abuse. If used in large doses over long periods of time, it can cause dependence and addiction. Be careful to take Adderall only as prescribed.
Never take more Adderall than your doctor has prescribed. Do not take it for a longer time or for any other purpose than prescribed.
Take the first dose upon awakening. If additional doses are prescribed, take them at intervals of 4 to 6 hours. Avoid late evening doses, which can interfere with sleep.
If you miss a dose, do not take a double dose. If you are taking more than 1 dose a day, and you remember within an hour or so of the scheduled time, take the missed dose immediately. Otherwise, skip the dose and go back to your regular schedule. Never take 2 doses at once.
Warnings:
If you have even a mild case of high blood pressure, take Adderall with caution. Be careful, too, about driving or operating machinery until you know how this drug affects you. It may impair judgment and coordination.
Adderall can make tics and twitches worse. If you or a family member has this problem (or the condition called Tourette's syndrome), make sure the doctor is aware of it.
With attention-deficit disorder, the doctor will do a complete history and evaluation before prescribing Adderall, taking particular account of the severity of the symptoms and age. If the problem is a temporary reaction to a stressful situation, Adderall is probably not called for.
jeffjordan 04-28-04, 11:52 AM hello, I have been on Adderall XR, and regular Adderall both. Individual doses vary in everyone. Adderall XR is a stimulant- so yes there is a dangerous amount that can be taken by anyone. My personnal experience I have had overstimulation before due to the fact that at the time I was trying to find my so called correct/effective dosage. The dosage that worked for me. This was with the regular perscribed adderall tablets (overstimulation.) As far as medical "serious" problems it was only temperary psychological discomfort. I had excessive anxiety, tremors, and overstimulation. I have heard of people becoming paraniod and actual paranoid delusions- sometimes "hearing voices, seeing figure like shadows, and extreme nervous twitching." It varies but I have only heard of these manifistations in over using/abusing Adderall regular tablets. These side effects were caused by extreme dosages- than perscribed. Adderall XR is a safer form but side effects still exist "appetite loss, sleep disturbance."
DjRyanZ7 11-04-04, 05:15 PM I take about 20 adderall at a time... Ive OD'd Many times though, mostly the od is weak and not seviure... Ive never even came close to dieing...
andocrates 11-04-04, 08:54 PM Overdose on Adderall is tricky, it varies widely. However, Amphetamine overdose is generally not fatal. I would say for a normal person who regularly takes Adderall it would take 100-150 MG to really OD
Because of the types of amphetamines in Adderall you get sick rather quickly (i.e. it's not a good "getting high" drug)
And PS djryan, that's not really an overdose that's just nervousness and anxiety from taking a little too much.
Yowzaaah 02-26-05, 02:54 PM I take 60mg of XR daily as prescribed. On days when I have something I HAVE to do and "can't" (like financial paperwork for my divorce, taxes, RFPs for work) I generally take up to 120mg by adding 30mg every 1-2 hours until I'm focused (have gone as high as 150). Never get buzzed or high, get a crushing headache and a hand tremor over 120mg though. I don't take them on most weekends so I normally have "extra" meds for days when I can't get my act together for whatever reason.
yupyup1128 03-04-05, 05:24 PM yeah i have taken more then perscribed,, large quantities,,, its sucks hardcore after awhile,,,, i could go on but i cant type now,,, but yeah i would consider help if u think u need it i wish i had done it sooner instead of waiting a year till s*it got bad,(i dont take it now) butt id seek help if ur thinking about it

shinobi 05-20-05, 12:56 AM this looks like the post of an addict trying to extort additional info for using. The mention of a support site however makes me think this might be a legitimate request for info to help ensure safty during detoxifacation. More info wouldent go a miss, would ensure better advice combined with less chance of feeding others habbits.

MillenniumMan 06-10-05, 06:57 PM What I don't get is for some reason XR 10 MG was becoming to much for me...
then after not even more than a year
of being on 5 XR that was getting to much for me.
babybytch69 10-06-05, 08:14 PM A lot of things help determine how much is too much. When you overdose - I know these form expierance- you could have some of these:
frequent panic attacks
nerousness
poor circulaton
halusinations
high stress levels
restlessness
sleepinees, but you can't sleep
Common term for overdoing on Adderall is Speeding, so if you know anything about that thet are pretty simulare.
Hope I helped!

brandilyn 10-07-05, 02:02 AM All I will say since its kind of fishy is that......
Everyone is diffrent. Some can take more some less. You never know how your heart or blood pressure will react.
Two people could take the same dose and one have a terrible reaction.Heart attack anyone?
Its a very serious issue....dealing with these meds. They are a critical part of function for many, many people but for some....
A new way to get high.Sad but true.
Have you taken too much and wondered if this was the norm? Was it a bad experience?Or have you gotten a perscription yet?
Dont think Im coming off weird but alot of us have to really watch ourselves with dosage talks.Anyone with ADD has experienced the feeling of someone wanting imfo to get high.Im sure thats not what your intending so please dont be discouraged by some inquiry.
I would love to hear more about you and possibly answer more questions for you.
Frangible 11-14-05, 05:53 PM The LD50s of amphetamine, especially in people with a tolerance, are extremely high. You probably will feel very bad before you reach anything near a fatal level.
Zenquin 11-14-05, 09:08 PM Damned tolerance. I have taken 270mg XR over the past two days to no effect. I am going to get off of this as it is worthless to me.
Sun2707 01-05-06, 11:14 AM Wow, 270mg in 2 days, 150mg a day, that's a lot. Yeah damned tolerance! I went from 15mg to 75mg in 2 months, my tolerance built up way to fast!
I was concern when I took 105mg by mistake, I though I took to much, I am glad to know I am far from it! When I took my last dose it was around 9PM, I didn't felt anything for a while, I was okay but between 6 and 7PM it hit me, my heart was jumping and I had problem breathing, I was so scare, I though I will die. I guess it was a panic attack, I don't have it often but this time it was strong. How could I had a panic attack? My concern of taking to much had gone, since 105mg is not a fatal dose, maybe I was so tense when I first though I could OD on 105mg, my tension had built up and I end up having a panick attack but why so late?
Maybe it was not a panick attack. I usualy crash 8 or 9 hours after taking my dose of adderall. Since I took my last dose at 9PM and I end up feeling so bad between 6 and 7 AM, it may mean my adderall start to wear off and I crash. I was also down and had a headhache. Now I am better, I took seroquel and it seem to had help. I feel sleepy but I am affraid to go to sleep and be hit by another panic attack or something worst. It been more then 4 hours since this happen I guess I will be fine and it was only a panic attack but still it was scary.
The adderall must been out of my body now? Since it been more then 12 hours I took it, I must be out of danger from any bad side effects or anything worst to happen? I feel okay now, just a bit tense from the panic attack but I feel alright now!
Yowzaaah 01-30-06, 08:36 PM Let's face it, it's rather difficult to "off" yourself on amphetamines, narcotic painkillers - pretty easy - amphetamines, not so much. If you feel "icky" take less of them.

If you feel "icky" take less of them.Actually, you can put yourself into a cardiac dysrhythemia (sp?) by taking too much, so this is nothing to fool around with. I'm sure you've heard of athletes dying from an overdose. You're symptoms could have been a panic attack or from the fact that you are overstressing you're heart. I strongly encourage you to talk to your doctor before increasing your own dose. You are way over what is normally prescribed. You don't want to set yourself up for addictive problems or damage your heart.

Matt S. 04-13-06, 10:09 PM my doctor had me rx'd to 120 mg per day of adderall and it didn't calm me down at all I am on dexedrine now at 50 mg per day and have been at that dose for months without a need for increase it can depend on metabolism sometimes and also whether or not the mixed amphetamine salts versus the single dextro salt have a better effect some people do not have much of an effect with one adhd drug and do well on others while some have one that works... whether it is adderall or one of the methylphenidates... I tend to have to need the highest of the dosage ranges where as with dexedrine I can stay where I am at with no problems... Dexedrine and Desoxyn are more potent and direct acting than Adderall so ask for one of them if it really isn't an addiction issue
lukeyboy21 07-25-06, 10:27 PM yeah, you're right that dexedrine is more direct acting then adderall but you had about 80mg's of dextroamphetamine in that 120 mg's of adderall, so by going down to 50mg's of dextroamphetamine and weakening your dose its interesting how that has a better effect on you. Maybe you don't respond well to the ampetamine sulphate.
amphetamine78 08-17-06, 06:18 AM I've taken 220 mg before.
It's the most wonderful, beautiful feeling in the world.
VicodenAmphet 05-24-07, 10:23 PM when i took 250mg (roughly) it wasn't that great, i felt like a crack head that was a while ago now i take it only by 30 mg capsule with or without and addition 15 mg capsule depending on my day. The only exception is today, iv taken 150 throughout the day and im a little ****ed at myself for not feeling any change but a little energy. I figure its because i took my zoloft 50mg with it, and i knew if i didn't i woulda been tired like **** by 4 when i had to go to work after school. LOL ironic because my friend game me 3 Norco (hydrocodone 10mg) to keep me going without passing out at work (im always tired in the day). I highly believe i have ADD because the research iv made the past few months explains why i was always the kid in (elementary) school who had no idea what the **** was going on i was a class clown without trying to be. Though iv been taking adderall illegally (im going to tell my doctor about it within the month, ill take any test they have, ill stay clean and go a week sleeping just in case) - it has helped me so much with my depression, OCD, high drug addiction (that 3 hydros were only b/c the ADDy'z weren't working, some paradox ****) and especially my lack of ambition and paying attention isn't as hard as it used to be. SORRY THIS WAS SO LONG THIS IS MY FIRST POST MIGHT AS WELL SHOW YOU WHO I AM, NO LONGER BEING DEPENDANT ON NARCOTIC DRUGS. Adderall doesn't make me high btw it makes me comfurtable with my environment.

If you feel "icky" take less of them.wow thats madd off, for someone who was an addict to any kind of narcotic i could get my hand on i know a lot about the ****. 1 they are amazing, and i hate them. i could easily stop adderall and go through the withdrawal(with the exception of goin back to how i was, narcoticz), Oxycodone and hydrocodone withdrawal for me was at least 2 to 3 weeks of muscle pain headaches hatred, suicidal and homicydal thoughts. To be honest adderall helped me quit narcotics.
QueensU_girl 05-24-07, 11:18 PM In overdoses, I'd be worried about my heart and brain and blood pressure. (e.g. heart arrhythmias, heart attack, stroke, etc.)
In a case of OD, I guess the best advice is to seek immediate medical attention. (e.g. page your doctor or go to the emergency room)
Matt S. 05-25-07, 11:28 AM 400 mg of the dexedrine 10 mg tabs once just to get out of a bad living situation... stared at the wall for hours
chad31687 05-25-07, 12:08 PM My doc told me that a 300 mg dose could be fatal to most people with or without a tolerance, but Ive read stories of ppl being hospitalized with appr. 960 millies in their system and surviving. YIKES almost a whole gram lol. Proly all depends tho.
Matt S. 05-26-07, 03:19 PM it didnt feel too good with the dexedrine but I think dex is considered more addictive due to it's lack of "peripheral action" i think Adderall would blow your heart out faster... I honestly did that to scam my may to rehab (don't try it I have been on dexedrine since age 6 and I am 26 so I only get the dexedrine still for that reason, plus I kind of have Antisocial Personality Disorder traits so)
D.B. Cooper 07-27-07, 07:42 PM Im back from hiatus.
1. If i see people talking about drug overdose/use in an iressponsible manner your post will go away. This is an addiction forum this is not a drug use forum and the line will be drawn.
2. Do it again and the thread goes away.
3. A third time and an admin or someone with more powers than me talks to you or does worse.
Ill leave this up as a reminder.
