Why is it so hard to find an add specialist? I am looking for a doctor who can help me. I live in Seattle, Wa.

Have you had an appointment with your GP? Because I was referred to a specialist through my GP so maybe it's the same process where you are (I'm from the UK)..

have you tried community mental health services?
educational psychologists?
private psychiatrists\
licensed psychologists?

I called my gp and she didn't call me back. Two times now! Very rude. I found a phychiatrist, but he told me he dose not treat add and I got a few references from him to no avail. I asked my insurance provider and the can't find an add specific physician. I guess I am looking for the name of a doctor who has experience in treating adult add in Seattle and can prescribe meds if I need them.

may i suggest what I told my son?>
google the area for psychologists community mental health private counseling agencies and even regular doctors as well as psychiatrists. one hour on the computer and i found him the name of and number of 15 local physicians taking new patients several add specialist clinics and local psychiatrists.

My son had been diagnosed once but his evaluation was way out of date as he hasnt been treated in ten years///

I suggested he start with local physicians (he already had an evaluation scheduled but three months away with insurance set to expire in two months due to being recently laid off),,,when he called each physician he asked several questions
Are you accepting new patients?
Does the Doctor diagnose or treat patients already diagnosed with adhd?
Is the doctor knowledgeable about adhd?
Is the doctor averse to treatment with stimulants if non stimulants dont work?
If the nurse of appointment secretery will ask the doctor if he would consider evaluating and treating adhd?
It took my son 45 minutes worth of calls and three business hours later he had an appointment with a local physician who will meet with him and consider helping with medication till he can have a new psychological and get into a rotation with a psychiatrist...Dont be afraid to ask questions. Imho patients are the purchasers of services and shouldn't be afraid to say what you need....called the doctors office on thurs. doctors office returned call on friday and the appointment is on monday..

i had my son fill in several on line tests and he has emailed them to the new doctor already.... Hope this helps you!!

there are many sights listed you have to scrutinize them to determine which are dieticians homeopaths and or chiropractors who as a rule cannot order medicine most of the psych clinics are probably associated with doctors and or nurse practitoners who can order meds if needed...katts

let me know if you find some one...

katts

personally Id try the first two doctors first prob will have to wait a while dont know how it is there for medical care

You may way want to check in with the ADD Resources (http://add.obrienbusinessgroup.com/) folks down in Tacoma. I have found them to be helpful in the past.

No.. I'm alone, I moved here a few months ago, and I rarely leave my apartment so I don't know anyone...

I just did some research on here to see if anyone knew anything about the Drs you suggested, and then I found a post on a Dr. Loeken who is a group health Dr, so I called her and she doesn't see anyone who's not on Group Health insurance, so now I'm going to investigate Sue Wood... at least I'm doing something today...

ETA: I called Dr. Wood's office and left my name and number, so hopefully they'll call me back and we can set up an appointment.. thanks again Katts =]

put some calls into the other doctors too accept the one that fits your time table. You may have longer waiting periods with some of the docs. Glad to see you are working on getting it done!! Good luck!

I hope that all of you can find good practitioners in your areas.

I wish it were easier, unfortunately it's always a gamble of sorts.

My respectful suggestion (s) would be to find a knowledgable physician first.

The local medical societies may be helpful.

Often times, word of mouth referrals are some of the best sources.

In the mean time, there's been a great many posts on Diagnosis here in the FORUM.

Nowhere is that a more critical factor than with females.

Dizfriz has posted some excellent comments and I'd invite you to please check those out.

Good luck.
