I have a fan by my bed. The noise helps me sleep. I run it every night, summer or winter. If I forget to turn it on, I can't sleep until I remember it's not on, or I'll wake up after falling asleep and realize it's not on. When I turn it on, I sleep through the night. I also sleep better in a cold room. Don't know the logic behind that.
You know...same here. The room has to be cold, and a fan or "white noise" has to be on...sometimes I sleep with ear plugs in...helps to make the ambient noise more "white"
I also have to have my fan on..and a cold room. Although I do sleep under an electric blanket on a very low setting in the winter time, because if I don't I'm so stiff the next morning I can't get out of bed. (Fibromyalgia)

Well, I slee with earplugs. I started doing it in my early 20's. Every once in awhile I get by without having to do it. I have also slept with a fan on in the past and have started doing it again along with the earplugs. I have some noisey neighbors.

Addle,
You said that
If I forget to turn it on, I can't sleep until I remember it's not on, or I'll wake up after falling asleep and realize it's not on. When I turn it on, I sleep through the night.
I also believe this is OCD related in your case since you are OCD. Think of it as an anxiety and OCD is an anxiety disorder.
I have tried to sleep with ear plugs in because hubby (nightbreed) snores so very loud. But my ear canal is shaped weird..it slants towards my face..I even had some made once and I still can't keep them in or I wake up with an ear ache. It sad but we may have to get seperate rooms or something. I will miss him if we do. :(

Ear plugs would make me nuts. I need a cold room, husband needs a million blankets and a hot room. I need my feet hanging out and to not feel confined, he needs to be balled up under two quilts and a blanket. I hate to sweat , he has to be so warm he sweats buckets. We have heated battles over the thermostat. He won. when I was single i also needed "fresh air" so I slept with a window open winter or summer.
I also have to have a fan on regardless of the season. I even wake up whenever the power goes out because the fan turns off. I thought I was the only one like this.

I used to sleep with the radio on all night... I needed that... since getting married though, my wife can't stand that, so things are quiet in the bedroom.
I used to have trouble with that, couldn't get to sleep with a quiet house.. every little noise brought me back to full awareness.
These days however I am so tired that I just crash instantly, no matter what the situation...
I'm so glad to read this! I was told how I sleep was so wierd by my two exs!

I also need a window open for fresh air. And as for sound, a fan on low or an equally "white" noise is the only sound I can handle. I share a room with my kids and my daughter had to learn to sleep without her radio on. With a radio on, my mind has to hear all the words and won't go to sleep! Surprisingly, my daughter is sleeping better. I wonder... :D
