View Full Version : Has medication helped you with your ADD/ADHD
pcollins32 07-02-09, 05:44 PM I went on my first consult and failed the practice run for the computer test right in front of the doctor. Then I got the date mixed up for my next consult, where i would have gotten the results. I called the day I thought the appointment was to question the time i was to go that day only to find out my appointment was the day before. Well I think it's safe to say i got some ADD issues. Anyway, i go in again on july 6 @ 3pm, and will know for sure then.
I am unsure if i should persue medication after dealing with this my whole life as is. Forgetful, and as space headed as I am. and I wanted to hear from you the pros and cons of taking medication. Is/was it worth it for you and has it helped.
Short answer: yes, meds have helped. I made it 48 years without meds so I was also cautious. But, under proper medical supervision, meds are safe and effective for most people. The difficult part is finding the right med and dose for you. That takes some trial and error. For instance, I started on Adderall but had some side effects that I did not care for so I switched to Ritalin. You will find others on this site who have had the opposite reaction.
Good luck!
magdelaine 07-06-09, 01:27 PM Yes. I started on Wellbutrin because I had some depression/anxiety issues (and amp can make that worse) and actually experienced quite a bit of improvement re: hyperfocus, non-stop thoughts, short-term memory, date/appointment stuff, etc. However, I thought overall focus could be better so I added Dexedrine 5mg a few days ago. Inattention has definitely improved so far...I feel so much more awake, less foggy. We'll see how it does over the next few weeks...
But overall I am so thankful I made the effort to track down a psychiatrist and try medication. My husband is too.
jimmyflynn 07-07-09, 09:51 PM Meds have helped me greatly, I have been on vyvanse for about 4 months now (prescribed 5 months ago when diagnosed, but I refused to take them for the first month or so). The side effects really made me a little nervous, but overall, they for the most part have subsided, and my ability to start, focus, and finish things has been amazing, my impulsiveness is greatly improved as well. I have noticed that when I have taken a "holiday" from the vyvanse, not only do I act impulsively, but my thoughts are very impulsive as well.
COMatty71 07-08-09, 08:15 PM Absolutely. I will graduate next May from college when I believed I never would. Before meds, specifically Vyvanse, the odds of me graduating were becoming slimmer and slimmer every term. Now, with meds, I WILL be going to grad school and am working hard to rebuild my gpa (which took a serious beating prior to meds). School is much, much easier and I actually enjoy reading and learning now. I will admit that some of the side affects can be troublesome, diminished appetite (leading to poor athletic performance aka "bonking"), dehydration, hyper focus (not sure if that's bad except when you spend an hour crafting an email response) and mild depression at the tail end; they are all, however, very manageable. I'm currently a server as a means to earn my keep and it has helped a lot there too.
radryan1979 07-09-09, 11:55 AM I was on Straterra for a while, and that just kind of chilled me out. I was hesitant to take anything stimulant like for a while, but finally decided to try Vyvanse. After 28 years of nothing, Vyvanse was almost like a small miracle. My work life has improved, my over performance has improved, and I'm accomplishing projects I start and able to manage my time much better. The first few days were strange, not sleeping much, some jitters and other side effects, but they went away soon after and I honestly don't know how I survived without. When I tried taking a 3 day "holiday" I was all over the map, especially with impulsivity. Don't think I ever want to take a holiday again - lol.
crazycat1990 07-10-09, 08:18 PM Well I finally got diagnosed yesterday (assuming it's ADHD combined type cos psych didn't mention sub-types and I have all 3, inattention, hyperactivity and impulsiveness) and I am on Concerta XL 18mg, started them today.
I felt sooooo great today! Just so happy and awake and alert and...just great!! And I spoke to my mum about something that had been troubling me the past few weeks. :)
But for all I know, in a week's time, I might feel different and may need a higher dose, or I may have side effects. Only time will tell I guess!
The pros are obviously that the right meds and the right dosage does help.
The cons are possible side effects and reactions to the meds being in your system.
Good luck!
Mo The Cat 07-13-09, 04:28 AM Another forum member and I were discussing a (somewhat) similar topic in which we are both starting on Adderall XR 10mg per day and were wondering when some kind of effect should start being noticeable.
In answer to the OP's question: not yet, but this is my first day back on Adderall XR, I am likely jumping the gun and not giving it a chance yet. The other gentleman has been on it about a week and is seeing nothing after feeling more focused the first day.
However, I know many people on these forums have said medications have helped them quite a bit though, so it is worth a shot IMO. The alternative is what? Doing nothing right? This way you will know rather than wondering.
Just my 2 cents!
Momofadder 07-13-09, 09:26 AM Sometimes it is a lot of trial and error.....don't give up!
I just started medication (went undiagnosed for 21 years) last friday, and I've been told that my verbal communication has improved greatly (by the people I trusted telling that I'm on medication)
I noticed a severe difference in my ability to stay on topic and think clearly about things - It was almost like... My ideas were each people in a small room, and there were a hundred people yelling at once (I couldn't decipher much, and when I did it was fragmented) Now it's like I'm in a small room sitting down with two or three people and having a conversation that I can hear, interpret, and understand...
I have had a bit of dry mouth though, which I'm helping by finally getting in my 8 glasses a day :)
Good luck, and don't be afraid to approach your doctor with your ideas, it could bring about a change for the better

What dosage pADDat? Just curious. I'm on the 10 mg dose - which is what they put kids on I think.
I'm on 10mg dose of amphetamine salts (one when I wake up and another 4-6 hours later when I feel the other one coming down). I can feel when the dose wears off, which is very frustrating during the end of the 1st dose, and just fine during the end of the 2nd because it's when i'm sleepy anyway...
I think I'll ask my doc to put me on the longer acting kind instead of the ones I'm taking now to mitigate the highs and lows of it.

Oh ok. I thought you were on the XR which is the extended release. Yeah that might work out better for you as you only need to take it once.
I'm a on a single dose of 10 mg XR.
People suffering from depression seem to float from one day to the next, then suddenly plunge into their mental undertow, or just as quickly snap out of dark mind-clouds. For many, depression's tragic episodes can go on for years. A lot of times medical experts can barely explain depression's causes and mechanisms, making a cure seem so far away.
