View Full Version : Appetite has vanished on Concerta
chamaleon 07-22-09, 03:59 PM hey there
My appetite has VANISHED on Concerta, I have been on it for three months. I take 54mg a day in the form of one 36mg and one 18mg. It works pretty well otherwise and the dose does NOT numb my adhd totally at all! I dont think anything really could. It helps a bit.
I am a bit concerned about my appetite though, as its usually really normal. It seems I am hardly EVER hungry on this drug although i am happy to guzzle energy drinks all day like nothing new there:rolleyes:. I drink loads of water all day too.
I have started eating a big breakfast in the morning before taking my tablets, cos i cant manage to eat anything at work till around 4pm, when all i can handle is a bar of chocolate.
when i get in from work at 7, i force myself to drink a milkshake. then i could probably do without a dinner, but by about 9pm i could eat a big meal sometimes and do.
have just been on holiday with my mum tho, and she eats so much, i found it so hard to eat any day i took concerta, so i only took it for two days out of 6 and REALLY needed it cos i had to be organised for both of us...the days i was on it i couldnt even manage to eat a sandwich - i did eat icecream though, and i was at a wedding the other week and could not eat ANY of the meal, it was embarassing - anyone else had their appetite vanish? my appetite was totally normal for the first month. Now its gone, and will it come back? HELP!!!
The Trooper 07-23-09, 03:07 AM yeah, i have noticed loss of apetite on concerta, atm i taking 106mg, and i do nt eat until the night time, then i munch munch munch!!
Childe Roland 07-23-09, 12:16 PM Just schedule meals, and make yourself eat a normal portion even if you don't really feel like it. Protein shakes can help with this alot.
2Springers_Matt 07-23-09, 01:50 PM Yup. Me too.
I was/am on 54mg, and I eat a sandwich in the morning with my pills (prozac 20mg and Concerta 54mg). All day I eat nothing. I sometimes even feel like I want to eat, and I will look at some food options, and nothing looks good. Sometimes when I have forced my self to eat, like at a business lunch I could literally spit the food right out of my mouth moments after it goes in. It just doesnt taste/feel good.
I get real bad stomach aches on the 36mg too, but the 54 has no instance of that. I take a single 54mg pill.
By the time 4 or 5 pm comes around, im hungry, but still the thought of food makes me wanna puke. I do tend to eat dinner around 8pm, sometimes later. I feel funny when its 10pm, and I am grilling steak or chicken in the dark...
Same deal here on 54mg. I had exactly the same side effect on Ritalin about 10 years ago, and it was one of the main reasons I stopped taking it. I've put on a lot of weight since then, so appetite suppression isn't really a big deal for me now (I might even call it a positive effect).
Prusilusken 07-24-09, 08:44 AM Me too.
I never thought loss of apetite could ever become a problem for me!
But yes. I've started taking multivitamins with the meds and try to appreciate that I can actually eat very small, but very calorie-dense meals now. I have never been able to control that before! Sometimes I miss 'loving' food like I do off meds, but fortunately, I can plan for that a bit. :)
I try to schedule my meals because I know it's unhealthy for me not to, and to keep my belly "used" to eating. It's grows more difficult to eat the more it shrinks, so I try not to let that happen. I don't want that "anorexic nausea" when I try to eat to make it all worse.
I try to be aware when and what I choose to drink and time it better according to my meals. If I've just had a big glass of water, it's hard to eat. But if I eat first, I'll still feel thirst and get the fluids I need during the day.
I try to make it a high priority to make my blood sugar as stable as possible, as I am very much aware how fluctuating blood sugar affects and worsens whatever ADHD and other issues I have, and I have made it to a point now, where I'm pretty okay and don't lose weight I don't want to.
I have to watch it like a hawk though, and sometimes it fails, but hey.
2Springers_Matt 07-24-09, 09:50 AM I am aware of that "anorexic nausea". It is a good practice to try to eat scheduled meals. I just cant.

Yeah, I know it's hard. :(
I can't either, really. I can't even take my meds on schedule, so...But I keep trying, and all in all I think it helps me to be aware of the pitfalls. Every once in a while I actually even succed in dodging them. But it does take a lot og effort on my part and a lot of learning to forgive myself for failing so often and keep telling myself that "eating on schedule by accident/coincidence" is better than not at all. It's hard to keep at it when something inside me takes some sick form of pleasure in telling me that I might as well give up because I'm failing anyway. Sometimes it works, sometimes not, but for some reason I keep getting back up inbetween the 'nots'...
Take care, hope things will get easier for us.
crazycat1990 07-28-09, 09:08 AM I haven't had much of an appetite this year anyway, mainly I think because of stress and anxiety. And I've definitely lost weight, I am now technically underweight according to my Body Mass Index thingy. But regardless of that, I also look thin and a lot of people have commented. Not good :(
I think Conceta has made it a little worse. But I am trying so hard to eat normally. I am making sure I always have breakfast (something I never used to do since I became a teenager, never had the time or the effort :o ), and when I find myself feeling full during dinner, I force myself to finish it. It's just inbetween breakfast and dinner that I need to sort out. I never feel hungry in the day.
Also I keep finding that after I finish my dinner, which I have forced myself to finish despite feeling full...then I feel hungry again! Well only a little bit. But still, how odd!
On a positive note, I am also putting effort into drinking more water. Especially after my face has decided to come up in spots, despite being fine since my last "outbreak" when I was 14/15. Apparently it should help hydrate my skin and flush away the excess oil...hmm...
robbielyn 07-29-09, 02:31 PM Wow it makes me more hungry. Whats up with that? I started 36mg today and had a healthy meal. I would love to not have an appetite ok a less of one anyways.
chamaleon 07-31-09, 10:38 PM appetite still VANISHED.
i have started having toast before i take it in the morning. Then i drink water all day and one lucozade.
i have so little hunger but forcefeed myself a smoothie and half a banana around 3pm, and then a dinner around 10 or 11 at night.
wake up ravenous sometimes at 3am and go downstairs and have a slice of cheese.
but i think on an average day if i forgot to eat i could get away with just a smoothie and a banana, with a dinner every two days.... usually my appetitie without meds is MASSIVE
On concerta, i have SOME sense and will eat in the morning before taking it so i am sorted out. Also take vitamins. I have lost loads of weight though...:)
PhillyInnovator 08-03-09, 11:23 PM Appetite vanished for me as well. I loss many pounds on this medication. Be careful guys and schedule your meals.
chamaleon 09-19-09, 05:13 AM hey its a month and a half and my appetite is still shot.
i am 8 stone now (114 pounds) and have lost about a stone and a half.
have told doctor and seeing her soon. im not complaining as am at my ideal weight:), but dont want to lose much more, the appetitie thing is same as early august
was at work conference a few days ago, and been working crazily hard. Tried to eat but could only manage a few strawberries. And i could barely eat them, seriously. Its the chewing and texture as well as a slight nauseous and totally amphetamine not being hungry thing. I drank some juice, and loads of water.
At 9pm i got a bar of chocolate. I dont dash around like that every single day, but am still having weetabix at 8am (not always but almost always), then meds and coffee, the only one i have all day. Then the banana and smoothie around 3pm, with a couple of jellies, tonnes of water, and blueberries. Vit pills. Water, water, and small-medium dinner in evening (not too carb centric, and easy to chew, like small bowl of pasta....)
not taking it today (saturday) and going downstairs to make some chips :)
am still off cigarettes though!!! three weeks!!!!!
:D
