I have had add all of my life, now at 35 and testing my son (age 8)who was just diagnosised, I decided to be the "guinny pig" for the meds first.

I am on Adderall xr 15mg. (day 3) and feel more focused and calm, but fuzzy adn have NO APPETITE! I can't even think about eating. I also feel a bit sluggish.

I am about to put my son on a med by the advice of his teacher, Dr and counselor. I have battled for years with my son and always refused to medicate. He had colic, asthma, and has encopresis (bowle issues). He is a VERY Bright biy and has a heart of gold. Now ready to enter 3rd grade, I feel it will get harder and he is very impulsive and "spacey"
Low self esteem too.

What drugs? They all Scare me!!!!!
Adderall: Makes me fuzzy.
Strattera? Non-stimulant, but seems to cause depression

Stimulants have been found to be much more effective than Strattera in the treatment of ADHD in children. They work for a higher percentage of people and they are more consistant - Strattera's effectiveness has been know to vary over time. The side effects are about the same, on average.
It doesn't actually take a high dose of stimulants to acheive an effective increase in attention - .25mg/kg/day of dextroamphetamine (or adderall) is most effective for attention - again, on average (for a 100lb person this is about 15mg of Adderall).
Both Strattera and Adderall will upset some people's stomachs, at first, and both will also decrease appetite - Adderall more so than the Strattera.
It is certainly worth trying either drug - they are both very safe. I'd imagine your Dr will start him off at a very low dose and slowly increase it for maximum effect. The benefits - increased attention, implulse control and a resulting increase in self esteem - is worth any risk, in my opinion anyway. I've been battling with self-esteem issues my whole life, which I do blame on undiagnosed and untreated ADHD. I have noticed my self esteem is much better now that I am taking ritalin - but I still have to work on it.
Good luck,
Greg
