View Full Version : Dog People?

It seems like there are A LOT of dog people on here. My dogs are my kids and generally I would rather be around dogs than most people. I work and get along okay with humans but dogs are really the best people I know.

Just wondered if this is common for ADD folks?

:D Two dogs have adopted me. They are part of our family too. I think their unconditional love, strict confidentiality, and that we are forever their heroes makes them safe companions.

I'm a cat person. I admire their independence and their ability for quiet contemplation with occasional outbursts of sheer evil. Just like me. And they're smooth, silent and graceful. Totally me.
Unlike dogs and their dependent need for undignified constant attention. :p

sure is... My dogs has gotten me through so much. Especially with my depression, when I feel down and feel no one cares, I NEVER have a doubt my dogs still care. Many times before when i contemplated suicide, my dogs were the main reason I never did it. Couldn't live without em!

My dogs are ecstatic and greet me with full body wags when I arrive home, and make me get out and walk, and play, and they are the reason I come home. The center me.

(My cats pee'd on my pillow when I got home. Don't need no evil in my life no more.)

Not only am I a dog person but I am looking to get a puppy in the coming weeks since I have the time for one and I am going to take a stab at being a self-employed dog walker and pet care specialist. I have had it with corporate life and while I am on disability I am working on getting this all jump-started.

If anyone else does this and has had some success I would love to receive some advice ;)

I LOVE Chihuahua's but for the most part I'm a cat person like Marspider.

I'm a cat person (owner of a 15 1/2 year old tortoise shell psycho kitty) but love doggies too. Thinking of getting a Jack Russell in the future...such a cool dog :)

I am a dog person... but our cat is fairly dog like (she runs to greet me when I get home and follows up around the house!)

I love my cats, but my dog is my best buddy. He is probably the main reason I am still somewhat sane.

I was sort of afraid to get a dog for a long time, even though I loved them, because it just seemed like so much more of a responsibility than a cat. But, I love that my dog forces me to go out and exercise, I've made a bunch of new friends from dog-related activities, I learned all the trails in our woods, and my fitness level has improved astronomically.

My dog is a high energy mix of hunting breeds, so he needs to run several miles every day. I used to run 5 miles a day with him, but last summer I hurt my back and couldn't run for a good six weeks. Since the dog still needed to get his exercise, I started taking my husband's old mountain bike out on the trails. One thing led to another, and a year later I just competed in my first 12-hour mountain bike endurance race. I have a new sport that I love and it's all thanks to my dog!

And on a bad day when the world is against you -- well, nobody loves you like your dog!

i think cats are pretty neat overall (if they're friendly and keep those claws retracted). i've only ever had dogs, though. i just can't get totally on board with a pet that poops in the house. i also love going for a run, playing catch and going camping with my dog.

that said, kittens are just about the cutest things on earth:)

I like dogs, I grew up with them... but I have three kids, so I don't need the extra work. I have had dogs, but always had issues remembering to feed, walk, play, clean up poo, etc... I just prefer my cat who takes care of herself mostly. I fill her food bowl dispenser, and she's good for a week. She uses her own "bathroom", and doesn't bark when a firetruck passes by...

In answer to the question, is it an "ADD" thing, I would say no, it's more of a personal individual thing...some people prefer dogs, some cats, some fish, birds, reptiles, etc.

I have a cat. It runs everywhere, paws on doors and begs to enter rooms, runs after anything that moves and will lick my arm to wake me up when it's hungry. One cannot ignore sandpaper tongue of that magnitude.

Oh and yes, it's a cat - I double-checked again.

Eew dogs are so stinky! They can be cute but they're way too needy for me, won't leave you alone!

Cats are much more independent and a tad selfish - a bit like me...

Yes, I have always connected with dogs, sometimes more than people. They are so accepting, loyal, non judgemental, and loving. I think this is my doing though. I don't give people a chance

I hate to admidt Im the same way. I have given the love to people in the same intensity I do to a dog a few times in my life . But they usually feel pretty smothered.

I Loved my dog. I'm grieving her big time . I have two down vests in wating for a new GSP.

I think I best find one soon . I might just be motivated enough to clear out my place .

My flying suirrel must be noticing my need . She /he has taken to sitting on my hand while eating.

I stare in total enchantment. and gratefulness.

Our dogs give to more than just us . They are a gift to many.

ahh I have a dog, and I really enjoy his company. Its nice to just fight with him and then be tight with him again in the same minute. he is a german shepard, and I think he acts a fool sometimes just to get attention. He is forced to live outside in a doghouse/kennal because my dad is a neatfreak, but anyways when we first set up his run he realized people came out to help him when he wrapped the cable around a pole and he began doing it on purpose and waiting for us to come out, which we did.

for some odd reason when he doesn't like the dogfood we buy him, or when he runs out of food he will pick up his own crap and drop it in the food dish....no idea why.

sometimes I just look at him and feel like he has equal intelligence just a different type.... but who really knows.

It kills me to have to lock him up at night, like wow.... I hate authority and I do this to my own dog... I put him through so much stress chasing him around the yard trying to catch him, I wonder what he thinks of it? I don't know how he can still appear to be so happy when he is treated like he is, just locked up alone, chased and sometimes tricked into apprehension. Dogs do make me wonder though.....

never had a flying squirrel but I'm told they make good pets. I think it's the unconditional acceptance I've always felt from dogs that makes them safe places to put emotions. My are spoiled to the point of embarrasment but since this isn't likely to change I just go with it.

Odsymbmx....I used to keep dogs outside but after I lost my german shepard years ago they are house dogs. I like having them with me and they like the furniture.

I don't NOT like cats, but I'm pretty content to just pet other people's a few times and say "nice kitty."

But with dogs...I have two of my own that I love fiercely and dote on shamelessly (my mom says we treat our dogs better than most people treat their kids). But it's not just my dogs - every time I see a dog on the street I get a big smile on my face, and every time I see a puppy I have to consciously restrain myself from running up, giving it a big hug, and kissing it on the snout. (You may think I'm exaggerating, but if I am it's not by much.)

IMHO dogs "get" what life is about much better than us humans, and contrary to my experiences with people, I've never felt that I moment of time I spent in the company of dogs has been wasted.

yup me too.
We have 2 Springer Spaniels. Love em' to death. They are my kids. Henry, the one in my pic is the second love of my life. He's had a tough life, and he loves us in return.I always have had hunting dogs, Beagles. I seemed to always bond with the dogs really easy...they calmed me down I think...I will always have a dog-- most likely it will become the one constant I can say I have, had all my life. :)

good observation! I have noticed the same thing. I love my puppy, he is the first thing I see when I get home from school and even if I'm having a bad or long day I have him to cuddle with :)
