A couple weeks ago I (28 yr-old male) was prescribed Adderall XR 20mgs for the first time. My main problems were fatigue, lack of motivation and ability to focus. My doc said take one a day in the morning (since I only need them for work) and if that didn't seem to be enough try taking 2.

The first day I took one and it helped me a lot. I was very awake and alert all day and had plenty of motivation for my work. Can't say that it worked wonders for my ability to concentrate but overall still a big help. Over the next few days I noticed less effect however. They definitely still worked but I didn't have nearly as much energy as with the first dose... I was still getting more done than before but was back to holding up my head with my arm and staring at the screen slack-jawed when not typing. I do try to avoid this pose when there are people around but you get the point lol...

So today I figured I would try upping the dosage to 2... Well it's been just like the first day I took adderall... I've gotten so much done I actually ran out of work which is why I'm posting here... However, I am wondering if taking 2 a day is really a long term solution or they will just start to have less effect again. I'm not trying to end up like that woman in "Requiem for a Dream" if anyone has seen that movie. If you're taking amphetamines and haven't seen it I highly recommend it although it's not for the faint of heart...

Anyway it seems like I have either built up resistance really fast or maybe my body has just been adjusting to the drug in some other way. So for all you "seasoned veterans" out there, should I just go back to one pill a day and be thankful I'm getting whatever improvement I'm getting? Or should I stick with 2 or possibly go even higher? I've read somewhere that if you increase your dose to the right level you will hit a "plateau" and the drug will not lose its effect over time, at least not for a while anyway.

Also, I've heard about taking vitamin supplements or products like amphetarestore to reduce resistance to these drugs and make lower doses more effective and was wondering what people's experiences were with this.

Sorry for the rambling...did I mention I'm taking adderall ;) ... and thanks for any advice you can give...

What I hear is that you get a bit of an euphoria and you work really hard at first. That eventually settles, but you will notice that you can focus and get things done. You're just not high up anymore.

For people who use them weekdays and not on weekends, I think the effect comes back. I imagine most people who choose not to use them on weekends are thinking more about purging their bodies of the drug.

Sounds alot like what happened with me. I started off with the 20XR, for 4 weeks. Towards the end of week 3 I really noticed that it wasnt working as effectively, so I decided to take 2 for a few days and see the result. Told my doc and he put me on 30mgXR for the last 2 months. Im now starting to see the diminishing returns, so I think Im going to ask to go to the 40XR. Its just a matter of finding what dosage will provide the balance. From what Ive gathered over time you will not notice the effects as much as your body isnt tolerant to it, rather the side effects are just pretty well ignored by your body. Everyone is different and its going to take some experimenting to find what balances you out.

*Edit* Just wanted to respond to the above comment about not taking on the weekend. I dont take on the weekends as I find that it can impair some of the activities I do. I have noticed that by taking that vacation on the weekend vs weekends I do take the meds, I am generally less tired overall when I havent taken it. You have to remember that adderall increases your system activity rate, so if you dont need it why take. Just extra wear on your system.
