View Full Version : Anyone in Canada (Ontario) take Generic dextroamphetamine?

I asked my local pharmacy about the availability of generic, regular release dextroamphetamine and they didn't carry it and the pharmacist said that she had never seen a generic version, to the best of her recollection. I find it hard to believe that such a "old" drug would not be available in Ontario in a Generic form. Any Canadians out there taking generic dexedrine? I want to ask my Dr about trying it when my ritalin scrip runs out in two weeks.
Thanks for any info you can provide.

Greg,

I don't know if you have Walgreen's in Canada, but I usually look at Walgreens.com if I am curious about generic names and prices of things.

When you click on "dextroamphetamine", it says E DEXROAMPHETAMINE, made by Barr Laboratories.

No Walgreen's doesn't have stores in Canada.
I asked at a couple of pharmacies in town and they also didn't stock a generic. It appears that a generic version is not sold in Canada - just the name brand Dexedrine, which is twice the price of a generic if it was available. It's probably due to some weird Health Canada rule - there are a couple of other stimulants that aren't sold here either.

Greg

That's strange, I live in Nova Scotia and I've been prescribed the Generic Dex normal-release tablets before. I'm moving back to Ontario soon, and I was scared when I first read your post that Dex wouldn't be available, that stuff's worked miracles for me.

Dexedrine is available in Ontario, I just can't find a local pharmacy that carries a generic version of the drug (dextroamphetamine). If you have taken a generic version in Canada, it could just be a local issue.
Thanks for the reply

It turns out that there is no generic dexedrine in Ontario. It's not used as much here as ritalin, and doctors "worry" about prescribing it - there's definately a stigma attached. My Dr really "hummed and hawwed" when I asked for it - and I'm not exactly the typical "drug seeker" type patient Drs normally worry about. It works great however - for me at least.

You can't get Dexedrine cheap? I am taking it right now, and im only paying like 6 bucks for a months supply? I live in Canada myself...unless you don't have a basic drug plan I don't see the problem?

Hi All,

A doctor I had whom I truly respect for his knowledge and common sense told me the one form of medication he DOES NOT recommend in generic form are the psychostimulants; he claims they are truly inferior to the name brands and he is not lover of the pharmaceutical industry. One time I did order generic ritalin because the drug store was out of the brand name, and the stuff made me feel sick.

A moot point on the generic Dex, since they don't sell one in Ontario - or the rest of Canada, as far as I know. The price just went up on the stuff too - I now pay $.49 per pill + pharmacy fee whereas I was paying $.33 per pill - that's a 33.33% price increase. Gready *******s those drug companies, but I'll bet it's still less than in the states esp when you convert the curancy. It won't stop me from taking it either - I works very well so I'm not about to change anything - one of these days I'll get a job with a benefit plan.

Well, I always thought it helped me as well... until I tried to get a refill tonight at WalMart. A one-month supply used to run me about $62. Tonight I find out the price has gone up 50 percent to about $95. I said no thanks. You know, I've close to had it with all of this nonsense. I think this is as good a time as any to go on a rant. I'll be posting one soon because my fingers are burning.
