joanrdtobe 06-11-03, 12:34 PM Ya know, I have OCD...now I'm wondering if you could even pay me to go on TV and actually show my face in front of millions of people and tell my OCD story??? I mean think of it...my future boss could possibly see me on there! And I have chosen to keep these problems out of my workplace for now!:) And by the way, for the most part, I think Dr. Phil rocks!!! Someday I will do a thread/poll of what people think of Dr. Phil. I know he is a very controversial (SP?) issue in many households...you either love him or hate him!:)
jimmmaaa 06-11-03, 06:25 PM I like Dr. Phil A Lot! I like he what he says about people who worry about what other people think about them, it is not exact but a paraphrase:
You would worry about people thought of you if you knew how seldom them do (Think about you).
It is the general idea.
I saw Dr. Pil on Dave Letterman a couple months ago and it was really funny! Dave always does this thing where he does a thing where he plays are really short clip of Dr. Phil saying something really crazy, basically mocking him. It has some goofing music, sort of like Stuart Smalley, used to be on Saturday Night Live("I am good enough, smart enough, and doggonit...People like me!-Tangent) Well Dr. Phil was on his show, and Dr. Phil knew about this thing that Dave does and turned the table on him and played an odd quote of Dave's in the same manner. It was funny, very funny!
jimmmaaa 06-11-03, 06:48 PM Here is a cool website that I found when look for hte above paraprase of Dr. Phil, Dr Phil random quote generator:

joanrdtobe 06-11-03, 06:48 PM Thanks James...I basically love him too....his no nonsense approach to things...."you either get it or you don't"....."how's that working for you".....his awesome sensitivity.....um....yes I saw him on Lettermen that night too...and he had guts being on there considering how much Lettermen makes fun of him behind his back....Once I saw Dr. Phil do an interview with Larry King on his show....it was great...anyway, thanks James....:)
Energizer_Bunny 06-12-03, 06:17 PM I like Dr. Phil as well.
But as far as showing my face to millions, well I have a website about TS an OCD and ADHD, and there are pictures of me on my site and also some very personal issues as well. So going on public TV and talking about any of these issues would not bother me at all. And the reason for this is because there has been so many misunderstandings about people with these disorders. I believe it takes those of us with the struggles and the disorders to set the public straight and get the right information out to the public. I have even emailed his show requesting that he do a show on TS.
But is it just me or has anyone else noticed that he has an eye tic?
joanrdtobe 06-12-03, 07:13 PM Wow Energizer...now you got courage...and lots of it....for being willing to be on the Dr. Phil show.....listen when they answer your e-mail and do a show on TS I'm sure they will invite you as the main guest...when they do that, let us know.....!! Who better than you? I can't wait for someone to set the public straight, as you say, about these issues...What is your website?
Okay, now I've been watching him on and off for awhile...ever since his Tuesday afternoon gigs with Oprah..and haven't noticed a "tic"....but then haven't paid attention in that way either...what is a "tic" symptomatic of? I will watch for a "tic" next time I watch.
Energizer_Bunny 06-21-03, 05:51 PM Well, I emailed him, but never heard back and honestly doubt that I will.
A tic is a sudden or repetitive movement such as eye blinking, shoulder shurgging, head jerking and is also comes in vocal forms. Tics can be complex and simple. But in order to have TS you must have both vocal and motor tics. What I saw Dr. Phil doing was just eye blinking. But because I am a TS patient I have tendencies of picking up on things like that rather easily.
Thank you for your nice comments about my courage. I really appreciate that very much.

Overload 06-24-03, 08:55 PM Energizer, I've noticed that eye tic (blinking) for quite some time, since I first saw him, actually.
I'm sure that has something to do with why he got into Psychology in the first place. I'd bet his father has some too.
aforceforgood 06-24-03, 11:00 PM I've watched Dr. Phil for a total of about 15 minutes, so I'm not exactly qualified to make any other comment than this; that doctors in show business have a tendency to categorize people fairly quickly so that they can do soundbite therapy on them. Longterm therapy isn't exactly compelling entertainment. When guests question their 15 second diagnoses, they're usually browbeaten into either accepting their new labels, or labelled as "resistant" or whatever.
Their guests seem to tend to be wishy washy people too, usually all too ready to accept what he or any authority figure says. Maybe that's why EB is not receiving any response, because they figure he's got too much on the ball and will derail the direction they want to go (the most entertaining one, regardless of the facts).
joanrdtobe 06-25-03, 12:22 AM OR maybe they do not answer to Energizer's inquiries because THEN Dr. Phil might have to come to terms with his OWN possible Tourette's...since both Overload and Energizer noticed his eye tics...(which I did not)....This may be a topic Dr. Phil may be unwilling to talk about as it hits too close to home??
Force: Dr. Phil DOES do as you say...i.e. categorize people quickly and provide quick therapy as well....BUT I still do think that much of what he says is valid....entertaining or not....insofar as "wake-up calls", etc. is concerned. He always says that people do not have to take his advice....that ultimately people make their own decisions....
missing_cues 06-25-03, 02:05 AM my only problem with people like Dr. Phil is that they are basically telling people stuff they already know...its often very obivous...he's like an annoying, rich magic 8-ball...none of these people really ever have serious problems, or if they do, they merely need a good swift kick in the nads...basically, they need to take control...and, yes, they may need someone to do that for them, but I dont think that someone's TV show is the place to do that...I agree with force about the wishy washy people (of course,...he did get his start on Oprah) and at the same time, this is bias from someone who really hates pop-tv anything...I must say, I did go to a therapist once and she jsut kind of sat there listening to me and then pretty much agreed with most of what I had to say...it did feel good, I will unfortunately admit, to have someone with the PhD after their name tell me I wasnt a nutbar...(the issue at the time is not important, but I thought I had flipped my lid basically). Anyway, I dont personally like Dr. Phil, but I really dont care if people use his services or watch his show...I just dont like seeing people flock to these stars like they are messiahs or something....Its like watching a TV evangelist suck the money right out of the pockets of the conned-gregation....(I am a Chrsitian, but my ideas on organized religion provide more of my bias on issues such as these)...anyway, Im sure this will upset some and maybe enlighten others or maybe both or maybe neither...just my opinion...thats all

aforceforgood 06-25-03, 02:19 AM Ah, ok, good, glad to hear he's not a pushy b*tch like that Dr. Laura- she's on in between the talk shows I like, and I simply cannot stand her. She is so arrogant, and treats people like children unless they accept her diag/advice.
jimmmaaa 06-25-03, 02:31 PM Energizer, I liked your website too.
Force, I think Dr Phil is good and is different. He went on David Letterman afterall and he was funny on Dave, and could dish out a little to Dave's Jokes.
Missing_Cues- the people go on Dr. Phil, choose to go on the show. He does often state the obvious, but often the people in their problems are so in the midst of whatever their problems are that they have lost all objectivity and almost need some one to sledge hammer them on their head with the obvious. I think Dr. Phil does know his stuff, he just is able to present things in a way that sound so basic it sounds like anyone could do it, but that is not the case.
"but my ideas on organized religion provide more of my bias on issues such as these" What do you mean by this statement?
People often are looking for someone to follow, it is just a matter of who they follow. I am a Chritian as well and I just wanted to know your line of reasoning and what you meant about organized religion.
joanrdtobe 06-25-03, 05:59 PM Missing: I have to disagree with you or at least say something regarding your claim that none of the people on Dr. Phil's show have serious problems....I have seen very overweight children on his show. I have seen very sick people on his show. I think everyone has the right to judge the seriousness of their own problems. Obviously these people thought their problems were serious...who are we to say they are not? And if there is a serious problem, who are we to say that Dr. Phil's T.V. show is not the place to get the wake-up call if it will help them? I think people go on because they are desparate....they want to change but feel helpless to do so....so they figure if they take the time and trouble to go on T.V., perhaps they will be able to make the needed changes....Just my opinion:)
Force: I agree with you regarding Dr. Laura. I have seen her on T.V. and heard her on radio. I just feel as though she is TOOOO blunt...which really takes away her credibility as a counselor....
aforceforgood 06-26-03, 05:59 AM Yeah, a Dr. Laura vs. Dr. phil matchup where they analyze each other to death would be interesting...
ferrette1976 10-24-03, 11:08 AM I really haven't watched Dr. Phil more than a couple of times, but he sends a weird vibe to me that I don't like. Kind of like he's condescending or something. Maybe it's just me. I have heard that a lot of people on his show have left feeling used and abused.
That is funny that he was on Letterman. I love Letterman.
Okay I know this is a bit off topic, but have any of you ever seen the Letterman shows with Richard Simmons as a guest? You know how he used to make fun of him all the time? Now those were funny. I am still trying to figure that guy out (Simmons) . . . is he gay or what???
. . . not that there's anything wrong with that !. . . (Seinfeld fans :D)
Even MAD TV often pokes fun at DR. Phil. He's always played by cast regular Michael Macdonald. One sketch had Dr. Phil going berserk on his show. Another skit was a parody of survivor and Dr. Phil was one of the contestants. It was pretty irreverent. Iwonder if Dr. Phil evr saw these skits and what he thinks of them...
iforgot 07-21-05, 04:46 PM  I only caught a part of today's program (I got distracted ;) )
did anyone catch the name of the doctor who suggested some simple steps involving relaxation & excersize etc.?
