I live in a large metropolitan area where there is only one doctor qualified to treat ADHD. His two year waiting list has been closed for a year. He indicates that none of his residents wish to specialize in the treatment of ADHD because it is too difficult a diagnosis to make and they fear being sued down the line. How likely is that, do you think? It seems to me that more and more only those of us who have it understand it!

Have you tried contacting CHADD Canada http://www.chaddcanada.org or ADHD Canada http://www.adhdcanada.ca ?

I'm sure there must be at least a handful of Dr's in the Ottawa area who treat ADHD. It may be more difficult to find one that treats adults, but there must be someone with less than a 2 year waiting list! Psychiatrists should be able to do a diagnosis.
I'll admit that it did take me some time to find a good Dr to diagnose me, but I'm a couple of hours away from Toronto so it was trickier (the local P. Doc I saw was useless - I ended up traveling to Toronto and back at least ten times to see a specialist before the process was complete).
Be persistent, and hopefully you'll find someone to help you. In all likelyhood you will still be dealing with your GP for medication and such - the specialist I saw did the diagnosis and wrote a very detailed letter to my GP, but I am going to my GP for medication (which is actually frustrating, since I seem to know more than he does about the treatment of ADHD - but he's at least reasonable about it) and I'm looking locally for a little psychotherapy.
Good luck,
Greg
