View Full Version : Strange emails...
Nucking_Futs 06-07-04, 01:06 PM I'm wondering if anyone has ever received very personal emails from members of the opposite sex they have never met? And is there any way you can block these? I've never replied and have been deleting the emails but I'm afraid my husband will see them and think that something is going on. I've replied a few times and not in the kindest fashion and this person can't take a hint.
Are you talking about forum members or just random emails?
Nucking_Futs 06-07-04, 01:21 PM Honestly I don't have a clue...I do have my own email address in the forum profile which I'm going to remove just in case. BUT, it could be from someone who know's someone I know (does that make sense?)
jaimegerise 06-07-04, 02:18 PM Hmmm that's bonkers. I've gotten spam that kinda looked like that. Do you recognize the sender's email addy or anything?
You might be able to find out where they are located by looking up the domain name in their email (after the @) at http://www.arin.net if it's a local ISP. You could also report them to the abuse contact at that domain though I wouldn't hold my breath on getting a response it'd be a simple thing to do and will get them in trouble if they do a lot of this kind of thing.
Nucking_Futs 06-07-04, 03:25 PM I contacted my friend's and family that I normally send emails to and get emails from on a regular basis. A lot of my friend's send their forwarded emails bulk, I was wondering if someone had this guy on their list. So far I have gotten three replies and no one has him so I'll wait and see.
Futs I don't know that you'll be able to distinguish between a deliberate target on your address or whether it's just someones twisted spam bot that has harvested you address.
Spybot S&D is a good way to make sure your winduhs box is clean of spyware.

Trendmicro is a handy "outside" check for other malware on winduhs boxen.

Depending on your email client you could create a filter and never see another one.
Never ever reply to emails that you don't know or want to be involved with. Spammers use this to make your email address more valuable to sell because they have verified that it is "live". Even if they say you can "unsubscribe" don't do it!
Change your email addy. Talk to your isp. I don't know. On windows it seems hard to stay away from trouble.
Hope this helps. Ian
waywardclam 06-07-04, 04:55 PM Ya want someone to help you beat him up?
I get soooo much spam it's not even funny. Not only do I get it, I now have people complaining that people using livingwithadd.com are sending them stuff.
I actually have a form letter that I send back to them explaining that if it was actually sent by a spam bot that spoofed the from address . I also have to explain that the header info was spoofed too and that it came from lwa.com that it would have been sent through a specific sever and each email would have had a specific footer.
Some of the people are irate because they have been getting some nasty emails that seem personal.
I know there is a way in Email Options that You can block them..just enter email addy in the block section and no more email from em
Post there address here on the forums and we will all compose a letter and send it back to him .
Ill bet we could collectivly write a dilly for him

Nucking_Futs 06-07-04, 11:25 PM I'm hoping I took care of it but if I didn't I think I'll take you up on that offer. Then I'll use Mel's ignore. Actually, I'm a mature adult I'm just gonna use Mel's ignore and be done with it. But, thanks for the offer and I'm sorry to ruin everyone's fun but at some point in life I'm gonna have to grow up. lol

You never know if I didnt' do it right and Doug finds one of his emails again lol I'll give you the "Big guy's" reply lol Trust me no one can be so mean as my big guy. And yes he knows this is no one I know because the first letter started with you don't know me but...
Jellybean 06-08-04, 02:49 AM I always delete any email with addresses I don't recognize, unless the subject is clearly something I relate to.
Hope it works!!

Nucking_Futs 06-08-04, 10:59 PM Well it didn't work next time he emails me I'm giving you guy's the addy. Cause I'm tired of this game already.
HighFunctioning 06-08-04, 11:26 PM For those who are worried about giving out their email address, but need a valid address to retrieve an email (such as for activation, but nothing that needs to be kept secure), take a look at mailinator (http://www.mailinator.com). You can send mail to anyname@mailinator.com without any signup and retrieve the mail by going to the mailinator site.
I would be very cautious as to who knows your e-mail address. If you use e-mail for business purposes, you should have an address for business purposes only! For example, I use one e-mail address for business communication and school. I have a separate address for non-business communication such e-mails to and from friends. I found the greatest amount of junk in my mail box was because of people that knew me and not (surprisingly!) because of corporate web sites. That is probably because I only give my true address if absolutely necessary. It may seem a bit cold, but mail from my (computer illiterate) friends tends to go in the same place as spam in my mail box. Address postings on forums can be bad too, especially when presented in a non-obfuscated format.
Of course, if you use services like hotmail or are on AOL, you are bound to get junk no matter what. Solution? If you need an email address, there are other services that provide email without the spam. Although I wouldn't expect most, I use the SDF Public Access Unix System for email, as well as other things.
As far as spyware, I can't say that I am extremely familair with it. I only use Microsoft Windows at work, and I browse with Mozilla. I have never detected any real spyware installed on my system (per LavaSoft AdAware), so I guess my only tips are:
* Be wary of ad supported applications. These type of applications often install some sort of standalone spyware to track browsing in order to optimize ads to ones taste.
* If spyware is acquired due to flaws in a certain browser that I will not mention here, maybe one should use a different browser.
* Use a spyware scanner and removal tool (as mentioned previously), especially after a suspicious installation.
I'm sure some of the information may seem misleading or inaccurate, as I am not profoundly experienced with spam, as I do not get very much of it.
I wouldn't want to propose anything illegal or anything.... Because lord knows a techie like me would never do anything like that, or know anyone who could do anything like that! OH CERTAINLY NOT! (Sailors are far too innocent for those sorts of associations!).... I do have a buddy or two that I can neither confirm, nor deny that if they were given the e-mail addy in full would find that to be enough information to dig up more and give the guy in question a hell of a scare.
Technically, this is illegal as %$*&, but then so is harrassment, and the legal means of stopping harrassment is slow, painful, and often ineffective. My buddy may or may not have been forced into the army as an alternative to jail time for getting caught hacking into a government site, and he may or may not restrict his activities now to dealing with jerks like this. In theory it amounts to digging up a street address, phone number and any other personal information he may, or may not get and e-mailing it to them with a not so subtle warning. He was Special forces in the Army before his little accident (now he rides a desk in between surgeries), so subtlety isn't his strong point. He's actually a real sweet heart though. He just doesn't care for predatory types, and he loves gadgets. He isn't diagnosed ADD, but I'd wager real money he is in a BIG WAY.
Anyway, I would never suggest anything illegal be done, I'm far too upstanding a guy for that sort of thing.
I mostly use webmail for day to day stuff. For "official" stuff I use my work e-mail because work related is about the only "official" e-mail I get, and for REALLY important stuff I use my ISP e-mail. I don't generally give out my ISP e-mail to anyone. If I get spam in a web e-mail account they usually have filters, and block functions. I am still careful who I give out the address to. I have had one occasion where someone who was ticked off at me put my e-mail on every porn listing on the web it would seem... I still occasionally get "male enhancement" offers in my inbox. SIGH! I could have just abandoned the web mail account. They generally get deleted after three months of no use. I happen to be REALLY fond of this particular account though as I've had it up and running for over 13 years now. It was my very first Web e-mail account, and in fact, my first e-mail account ever.
Nucking_Futs 06-11-04, 10:59 AM I will let you know if I hear from him again but so far it's been a WHOLE day but maybe he hasn't woken up yet lol.
